Well, in fairness (not that fairness is really a thing in this dire picture), the new US ship captain will be passing out blinders to all of his crew. So the other captains might be waiting to see how that goes.
And the change at the helm will bring new flexibilty--admittedly, not in physics, but in how to ignore physics with real flare...not that there will be other ships around capable of responding to such flares.

In all seriousness, though, while people already sold on the urgency of climate change can see cartoons like this and understand them, I actually think that this presentation promotes a misunderstanding of a serious nature.
Climate change is not a big event that suddenly happens in one particular moment, like the impact with an iceberg, or an asteroid strike in Don't Look Up. But metaphors like this, well meaning as they are in their intent that you focus on different aspects of the analogy, support the particular kind of denial that the new crew will be using a lot of: pointing to the absence of some singular cataclysm like that is proof none is coming.
And the picture also makes it look like at any time we could just change course and all would be well. It also supports the metaphor that any single person could be the superhero that swoops in to save us by making that singular, smart course correction in any moment before the cataclysm. Neither the problem nor its possible solutions, if any remain at this point, are as crisp and neat and simple as that.
Climate change, at this point, is more like an endless array of ever-more-densely packed icebergs with a lot of small boats each having the creeping realization that this was not the path we should be on and that there isn't any easy way out of the maze. We watch as our fellow ships, one by one, crash into less dramatic-looking, yet equally deadly, smaller bergs and tell ourselves that this is not what's coming for us, that icebergs of that size are normal, that historically many boats do not get sunk by icebergs, that we'll be fine.

Lembrar que a #COP29 está a ocorrer no #Azerbaijao, país rico e de gente de pele clara, mas muçulmano e por isso "não branco" o que lhe dá imensa liberdade para.. oprimir. Por exemplo o TPI nem sequer está a investigar o genocídio feito em 48h no #NagornoKarabakh.
Já #Israel, país de gente com muitos tons de pele frequentemente mais escuros do que o que se vê em Baku, é visto como branco porque judeu (ironia da história, recuando 75 anos não eram brancos pq judeus) e claro, responde como tal.

"Essential as ecological carbon stores are, trading them against fossil fuel emissions, which is how these markets operate, cannot possibly work. The carbon that current ecosystems can absorb in one year is pitched against the burning of fossil carbon accumulated by ancient ecosystems over many years.
Nowhere is this magical thinking more apparent than in soil carbon markets, a great new adventure for commodity traders selling both kinds of carbon market products: official “credits” and voluntary carbon offsets. Every form of wishful thinking, over-claiming and outright fraud that has blighted the carbon market so far is magnified when it comes to soil.
We should do all we can to protect and restore soil carbon. About 80% of the organic carbon on the land surface of the planet is held in soil. It’s essential for soil health. There should be strong rules and incentives for good soil management. But there is no realistic way in which carbon trading can help. Here are the reasons why."

Forests can't be used in NDC (nationally determined contribution).Forests are in adaptation mode, that is, death by drought, bugs, fires, until new ecosystem members have moved in long after °C is stabilized.
Trees adapt to longer growth seasons, higher temperatures, over-fertilisation by CO2. This means less water and nutrients and makes them unhealthy.Trees only park our CO2, then they burn.
#Koutsodendris et al 2020 counted pollen at Lake Ohrid, Albania.
Look at the gap between rising °C 🟡 vs rising pollen count for temperate/mesophilus trees 🟤 🟢.Adapting to a new climate takes time, even with seed-carriers and migration corridors: 1000yrs until new ecosystem members have moved in and adaptation to a new stable climate is accomplished.
But we don't have migration corridors. We have settlements and agricultural wastelands with pesticides everywhere.
Also, sinks start outgassing once ppm drops. So if your #NDC include negative emissions by DACS or CCS to undo a temperature #overshoot, to really remove 1t CO2 from the system, you must remove 1.5t once we're in the negative emissions phase.
Outgassing is a physical process to balance changes in atmosphere composition. But of course, when ppm drops considerably, it also changes °C and regional climate and hydrological cycles – again. So your ecosystem is going into adaptation mode all over again. Forests burn.. again.
Overshoot scenarios aren't a good idea, even if we had working technology and concepts. CO2 removal adds another stressful phase and prolongs adaptation to changing factors – for us and our human systems, and for ecosystems on land and in the ocean.
