Compared to 17 other high-income countries, death rates are higher in the U.S. from multiple causes. Although death rates from homicides were much higher in the U.S., the largest contributor to excess deaths was circulatory diseases for every year from 1999 to 2022 except for 2010.

This is an example of a key problem with WCAG 2: the guideline clams to "help colorblind" but the facts don't hold this true. On the left is standard vision, on the right is how it is seen by protanopia. Notice that the ones that "pass" are unreadable, while the readable ones fail.

📊 This paper by Crameri et al. from 2020 shows why #color choice in figures matters.
Rainbow 🌈 and red–green colormaps 🛑❇️ can distort gradients, create artificial boundaries, and exclude readers with color-vision deficiency. They quantify the visual error and argue for perceptually uniform, #CVD-friendly scientific colormaps instead.

Acknowledging Reality in Vulnerability Disclosure.
Every few years, vulnerability disclosure is declared settled. We are told that the ecosystem has matured, that coordinated disclosure is the answer, and that whatever remains outside this model is either irresponsible, obsolete, or simply irrelevant.

A Mendelian randomization study of the genes of over 400,000 individuals found that men (but not women) with genetically higher testosterone levels had an approximately 16% higher risk of coronary artery disease. The effect seems to operate partly through elevation of blood pressure.

Genomic sequencing of gut bacteria in people with and without coronary artery disease (14 & 28, respectively) identified 15 species of bacteria (out of 520) that are connected with the disease. Of these, 7 had higher abundance and 8 had lower abundance. Ten metabolic pathways were found to differ between the two groups, and bacterial influence on several of these pathways estimated.

I have quite a strong colour vision deficiency. One way it affects me is that I often miss red text on a dark or green background.
I used to have an app on my phone that would shift colours from the camera, so that I could at least see where the colour changes, if not give it a name. At some point that app stopped working with new versions of AndroidThis morning, while the kids were playing Minecraft, I spent a few minutes making a little web page that shows your webcam feed, and applies a hue-rotate filter to it. Nice and simple!
In case anyone's interested in my process, here's a recording of my "see colours any%" speedrun:

The page itself is at https://colour-shuffle.think.somethingorotherwhatever.com/index.html
(if you don't have a camera it'll just look like an empty page)

Another health study backed by direct measurements of light exposure (rather than guessing what it is from satellite measurements): “In this cohort study, night light exposure was a significant risk factor for developing cardiovascular diseases among adults older than 40 years. These findings suggest that, in addition to current preventive measures, avoiding light at night may be a useful strategy for reducing risks of cardiovascular diseases.”

An American Heart Association conference session describes how a machine learning model (inaccurately called "AI") trained on data from 266,000 12-lead ECG measurements was used to develop a predictive model for the single-lead ECG sensors used in smartwatches. Preliminary findings from 600 adults show an 88% positive predictive accuracy at identifying structural heart problems, and a 99% negative predictive accuracy.

Nominally harmless bacteria, such as an oral streptococcus, can form biofilms on athersclerotic plaques, where they are hidden from the immune system and antibiotics. Disturbance, e.g., by a viral infection, may lead to bacterial proliferation, inflammation, rupture of the plaque, and heart attack.

Blood flow restriction in the hind leg of a mouse resulted in long-lasting changes to gene expression in bone marrow stem cells that shift the mixture of immune cells toward a more cancer-tolerant combination, accelerating the growth of breast cancers in the mice. An observational study of diet and mortality data for ~16,000 people using diet data from 1988-1994 and mortality data through 2006 found that neither plant nor animal protein intake had a significant association with all-cause mortality, CVD, or cancer. There was a very slight inverse association between animal protein and cancer.

I’ve been infected with SARS-CoV-2 once I know of from June 2022 on:
the cause of the long covid that now defines my daily existence.
I suspect once more in March or April 2020 — but of fucking course, at that time the public could not access covid tests!Every ignorant person who asserts they’ve never had it
could have been ASYMPTOMATIC
(that they noticed / wanted to notice / were in a position to consider it amid whatever went on in their lives at the time).Absolutely no one can say they were never infected unless they were a
complete 24/7 no-cheat hermit
and / or covid testing
correctly at least once daily, *every single morning* from November 2020 to now.And guess what else?
The (rapid lateral flow) antigen tests probably haven’t been updated to the latest strains in a while.Good luck if you do have Covid 19 but can’t get time off work!
The (possibly expired) disposable test may not pick up new strains as reliably as older ones, which won’t be circulating as much as newer ones.#covid #covid19 #pandemic #lockdown #LongCovidKids #longCovid #longHaulers #cardiovascular #CVD #heart #heartDisease #pulmonary #heartAttack #myocardialinfarction #etiology #transmission #infection #disease #CDC #NHS

4/ this latest episode of extreme #caregiving involved all three of us getting sick. whether it was a cold or covid, i don't know. none of us tested positive, but all of us were headachy & sniffly for a week.
