  1. Victorian Environment Minister Steve Dimopoulos has announced $900k for more trees for Melbourne's west.

We think this is a great initiative. More canopy shade to combat #UrbanHeat as temperatures rise with climate change (Silly humans not reigning in #Fossilfuels fast enough so now you have to adapt). And more places for us to leave scent messages (peemails).

Western Melbourne has the lowest tree canopy cover in metropolitan Melbourne, with just 5.5% of urban tree cover in Melbourne as of 2018.

Now if only State Planning Department would update the data on vegetation and urban heat which is now 5 years old.

  6. Today marks the beginning of #disabilitypridemonth.

I therefore thought today was a good day, to launch my new advocacy group for Brimbank residents who are disabled, neurodivergent or still coviding (and their allies).

It is a brand new group, so don't worry that there are no members yet (I literally just launched it)! It won't take long for our community to start rallying together for what we need.

The group is aptly called The 'Brimbank Disability & Neurodiversity Advocacy Group'. It is a private group and a safe space. You can join the group here 👇

  13. Does this mean that #Brimbank City Council has shown support for the 3rd runway, on the proviso that residents be consulted and fairly compensated?
What does that mean for health impacts not associated with increased noise levels?
What does that mean for our #climatetargets and the #climatecrisis we are all in?
What does that mean for the hundreds of wild #animals and #biodiversity, that will be drastically impacted by the 3rd runway?

Council have been a big support of our campaign and I hope they continue to be. I also hope we can get some context and clarification on this motion.

** Sorry the audio and footage isn't better, I didn't have an external mic or tripod with me, as I had not planned on shooting the rally myself. I was also in a fair amount of pain as I had minor surgery just a few days before.

  19. #WhoAmIWednesday - The One Who Fights Despite Adversity.

I have had a strong sense of justice for as long as I can remember. I have spoken often of my need to help others, to stand up for what I believe in, to say something when something doesn’t seem fair or right. I have often fought battles that are unpopular; animal rights and Veganism, climate action since the mid-1980’s, Indigenous rights, defending the right for Muslims to choose to wear a burqua, fighting against the proposed religious discrimination bill, speaking out against transphobia before it was cool, advocating for same-sex marriage; again before it was cool, standing up for those who have been left behind and forgotten in an ongoing pandemic the government wants us to forget about…and the list goes on.

  20. #TopicTuesday Long Read: Disability Inclusion within Brimbank.
My first question raided at this months council meeting was as follows:
“Brimbank's 2022-2026 Disability Action Plan was released around 4 months ago, yet there is no reference to Neurodivergent people (other than reference to a symbol identifier), let alone any planning to ensure their inclusion in our community. Neurodivergent people should not need to wait until 2026 before their barriers to inclusion in Brimbank events will be considered, so what action is Brimbank City Council taking, to ensure their inclusion is possible at council run events?”

  23. It was encouraging to see councillors at this months council meeting, advocate for maintenance and facility improvements at Brimbank Park. I completely agree that this park is in desperate need of funding and repair. However, I am disappointed that considering their passion for this park, no councillor attended the recent Clean Up Australia Day event at Brimbank Park, or even responded to their invitation to attend the event.

  24. #FlashbackFriday - The Santa Run

When I was 19 or 20, I realised that kids in the neighbourhood were no longer able to see Santa on the back of a fire truck, handing out lollies on Christmas morning. This made me really sad; Santa is for EVERYONE! So, I organised with my parents to step in and fill that void.
I didn’t have a firetruck, but Dad had a Ute, which in hindsight, just gave my endeavour an Aussie spin. I dressed my father up as Santa and put him on the back of the ute. I couldn’t give out mixed lolly bags as I didn’t have a commercial kitchen, so instead, I purchased (with the help of my folks), individually wrapped lollies, bags of chips and small toys.
I wore something Chrismasie, sat on a milk crate on the back of the ute with Dad and helped Santa hand out toys and treats to the all kids in the neighbourhood. We even took dog treats with us for any fur-babies that come out to greet us.
We continued this tradition for about 15 years before it become too difficult to continue both logistically and financially, but the best thing was, we actually had parents tell us that they remember Santa coming to them when they were kids – we had managed to do this across 2 generations and leave community with some very special memories of our initiative.

  28. #WhoAmIWednesday - Culture and Identity

My father was born in Libya, as were his parents, and his grandparents. My father and his family always identified as Maltese, as this is where his family originated from.
Cultural influences in his family were muddled to say the least. The family spoke 3 different languages, their food and traditions were a mixture of Arabic and Maltese, but as my father come to Australia as a child, he had also learned the traditions and customs of Australia. In fact, since becoming an Australian Citizen in the mid 80’s, my father has identified simply as Australian.
This made it extremely difficult to find my cultural identity as a child. I was too Maltese for the Arabs and too Arabic for the Maltese. I was also too Aussie for both of them, but too ethnic for the Australians - even though my mother is 5th generation Australian with English heritage.
Culture days at school were particularly difficult; if I chose to celebrate my Maltese culture, then the Maltese kids would tell me I was not Maltese because my Dad wasn’t born there. If I chose to celebrate that my Dad was born in Libya, the kids retorted that I was not African. But I wanted to celebrate this heritage. I wanted to feel like I belong to these cultures and celebrate their unique attributes.

  32. Last week I had an opportunity to speak with Ben Carroll (Minister for Public Transport) and continue our conversation about fares for users of the new Keilor East (Keilor Park) station.
I have been seeking clarification from Mr. Carroll as to whether the fare will be a PT Zone 2 fare or if users will be required to purchase a more expensive Airport Rail ticket.
Mr. Carroll has advised that he is following this up with Jacinta Allen (Minister for the Suburban Rail Loop), and that he hopes to have the station accessible on a Zone 1 (PT) ticket.
Whilst I understand a final fare price can not be confirmed until closer to the station opening, the community should at least know if passengers will access the new station on a Public Transport Ticket, or a dearer Airport Rail Ticket.
I appreciate Mr. Carroll continuing to follow this up and I ensure the community that I will continue to seek an answer and keep you updated with any new information I receive.
