I haven't looked at it in a while, but #KDE used to have a brilliant "Contribute" page, that was basically like a wizard on a webpage that would basically ask things like "What areas do you have any skills in?" and then you could tick multiple checkboxes such as Community moderation, promo, design, social media etc, and then based on your answers it would ask more questions until at the end it would suggest what areas you could help in, and how to get started (eg contact points, links to "Beginner tasks" etc.)
That was the page that actually ended up with me designing Tokodon's logo for them.
