Squircle jail, czyli jak Apple zabrało ikonom to, co czyniło je ikonami [felieton]

Paul Kafasis z Rogue Amoeba apeluje do Apple o zniesienie zakazu różnorodnych kształtów ikon na Macu. John Siracusa nazywa to najbardziej wrogą deweloperom decyzją w historii firmy. Historia jednego z bardziej niepotrzebnych błędów projektowych ostatnich lat.

Jest coś urokliwego w tym, jak małe rzeczy potrafią wywoływać wielkie dyskusje w świecie Apple. Ikony aplikacji na Macu, ten skromny, kwadratowy obrazek w Docku, na który patrzymy setki razy dziennie, ale rzadko poświęcamy mu więcej niż ułamek sekundy świadomej uwagi, stały się w ostatnich tygodniach tematem, który zelektryzował część środowiska deweloperskiego.

Zaczęło się od wpisu Paula Kafasisa, współtwórcy Rogue Amoeba, firmy znanej choćby z Audio Hijacka (którego wykorzystuję do nagrywania „Bo czemu nie?”) czy SoundSource’a. W tekście zatytułowanym „Free The Icons” Kafasis przypomina najpierw, jak fatalnie wypadła zeszłoroczna premiera macOS 26 Tahoe pod kątem ikon. Dziesiątki własnych aplikacji Apple otrzymały wtedy nowy, „szklany” wygląd Liquid Glass, który w praktyce oznaczał regres. Ikona Automatora, dotąd szczegółowy rysunek robota, zamieniła się w rozmyty, trudny do odczytania kształt. Kafasis pisze o tym z ironią właściwą komuś, kto patrzy na to jak na profanację.

Co ciekawe, w pierwszych betach tegorocznego macOS 27 Golden Gate Kafasis dostrzega realną poprawę. Ikona Automatora odzyskała ostrość, zbędny szklany połysk zniknął, a dziesiątki innych aplikacji Apple przeszły podobną korektę. To, jak twierdzi Kafasis, prawdziwy zwrot na lepsze — i właśnie ta obserwacja skłoniła go, żeby napisać o innej rzeczy, którą Apple powinno naprawić przy okazji.

Problem narzuconej bryły ikon

Rzecz w tym, że wraz z Tahoe Apple nie tylko namieszało we własnych ikonach. Zmusiło też każdego dewelopera do przyjęcia dokładnie tego samego, narzuconego kształtu, czyli tak zwanego squircle’a, zaokrąglonego kwadratu znanego z iOS. Każda ikona, która nie chciała się do niego dopasować, była pomniejszana i zamykana w brzydkim, szarym tle, żeby zmieścić się w z góry ustalonej estetyce Apple. Kafasis pokazuje to na przykładzie własnej ikony Audio Hijacka, zanim i po uwięzieniu jej w tym systemie.

Żeby uniknąć takiego „więzienia”, deweloperzy musieli przeprojektować swoje ikony pod z góry narzucony kształt. Po dekadach pięknych, zapadających w pamięć ikon o różnorodnych formach, Tahoe spłaszczyło całą tę osobowość do jednolitej, nudnej powtarzalności. Platforma, jak pisze Kafasis, jest przez to gorsza.

I nie chodzi tylko o estetykę. Wyraziste kształty pełniły też funkcję użytkową, pozwalając błyskawicznie odróżniać ikony od siebie. Gdy wszystko sprowadza się do tego samego squircle’a, jedynym sposobem rozróżnienia zostaje kolor. To zawodzi u osób z zaburzeniami rozpoznawania barw, ale też w zupełnie zwyczajnych sytuacjach, gdy dwie aplikacje mają zbliżoną kolorystykę. Kafasis podaje przykład Slacka i Zdjęć, które w Docku trzeba oglądać z bliska, żeby w ogóle je odróżnić.

John Gruber zwraca uwagę, komentują sprawę na swoim blogu, że kształt to czynnik wyróżniający, a  nie tylko zwykła dekoracja. Wiemy o tym od dawna.

Wszyscy to wiedzieliśmy. I nie tylko Apple o tym wiedziało – reszta z nas również to wiedziała, ponieważ nauczyliśmy się tego od Apple. Oto, za pośrednictwem Internet Archive, wytyczne Apple dotyczące interfejsu użytkownika komputerów Macintosh z 2018 roku, czyli z czasów nie tak odległych:

„Rozważ nadanie ikonie swojej aplikacji realistycznego, unikalnego kształtu. W systemie macOS ikony aplikacji mogą mieć kształt obiektów, które przedstawiają. Unikalny kontur skupia uwagę na obiekcie i ułatwia rozpoznanie ikony na pierwszy rzut oka. W razie potrzeby możesz użyć kształtu koła, aby otoczyć zestaw obrazów. Unikaj stosowania zaokrąglonego prostokąta, który ludzie kojarzą z ikonami aplikacji na iOS”.

„Charakterystyczny kontur skupia uwagę na obiekcie i ułatwia rozpoznanie ikony na pierwszy rzut oka”. Tak pisali i radzili zaledwie osiem lat temu. Nie jest to opis chwilowej mody czy trendu. Jest to opis ludzkiej percepcji. Naszej niezmiennej natury.

Ludzie od TidBITS to potwierdzają

Kafasis przywołuje przy okazji ankietę przeprowadzoną przez Adama Engsta z TidBITS, dotyczącą wprowadzonych w Tahoe stylów ikon „Clear” i „Tinted”, które usuwają kolor niemal całkowicie. Odzew czytelników był jednoznaczny. Engst opisał to bezpośrednio: „mój mózg się po prostu wyłącza”, gdy widzi rząd identycznych, przezroczystych lub przyciemnionych brył na wzór czegoś, co najlepiej opisuje słowo kwadratokoło (wybaczcie, lepszego nie znalazłem!). Kafasis dodaje od siebie, że nawet gdyby te ikony miały różne kształty, styl „Tinted” i tak byłby wątpliwym pomysłem — a przy obecnej jednolitości jest po prostu zły.

Siracusa: to najgorsza decyzja dotycząca ikon w historii Apple

Najostrzej w całej sprawie wypowiedział się jednak John Siracusa, twórca legendarnych, wielotysięcznych recenzji kolejnych wersji Mac OS X, człowiek, którego trudno posądzić o skłonność do przesady. W komentarzu na Mastodonie Siracusa napisał, że squircle jail to najgorsza decyzja projektowa, jaką Apple kiedykolwiek podjęło wobec deweloperów Maca, i prawdopodobnie najgorsza decyzja dotycząca ikon w całej historii firmy w ogóle — „incredibly developer-hostile”, jak to ujął.

John Siracusa:

„Squircle Jail” to najgorsza rzecz związana z projektowaniem, jaką firma Apple kiedykolwiek zrobiła programistom Maca, i prawdopodobnie najgorsza rzecz związana z ikonami, jaką kiedykolwiek zrobiła – kropka. To rozwiązanie jest niezwykle nieprzyjazne dla programistów.

Jeśli ikony w stylu „squircle” są rzeczywiście lepsze, niech ten projekt wygra na rynku. W ten sposób przeszliśmy od klasycznego stylu ikon w systemie Mac OS do bardziej fotorealistycznego stylu ikon w systemie Mac OS X. Programiści przyjęli go, ponieważ sami tego chcieli i ponieważ użytkownicy tego pragnęli.

Jego argument jest prosty i, przyznam, dość elegancki. Jeśli ikony w kształcie squircle są rzeczywiście lepsze, niech ten design po prostu wygra na rynku. Dokładnie tak, jego zdaniem, przebiegało kiedyś przejście od klasycznego stylu ikon starego Mac OS do bardziej fotorealistycznego stylu Mac OS X. Cztery znaki drogowe w kształcie rombu: żółty znak ostrzegawczy przed skrętem w prawo, czerwony znak stopu, biały znak ograniczenia prędkości do 80 oraz znak autostrady międzystanowej nr 15. Kształt to nie wszystko, ale jest to jedno z narzędzi pomagających zapewnić różnorodność i niepowtarzalność ikon. Jednak już nie.

Cztery ikony aplikacji Apple w kolorze czarnym na jasnoszarym tle: logo Keynote przedstawiające mównicę oraz ikona aplikacji w kształcie „squircle”, a także logo Numbers przedstawiające wykres słupkowy oraz ikona aplikacji w kształcie „squircle”.

Już sama sylwetka starej ikony Keynote jest bardziej rozpoznawalna, a tym samym bardziej charakterystyczna, niż jakakolwiek ikona na jakiejkolwiek dzisiejszej platformie Apple.

Apple potrafi się cofać z błędów. Więc dlaczego nie teraz?

Kafasis kończy swój tekst na nucie ostrożnego optymizmu. Skoro ktoś wewnątrz Apple dostrzegł błędy popełnione przy wdrażaniu Liquid Glass i naprawił ikony własnych aplikacji w Golden Gate, skoro Apple wprowadziło niedawno chwalony przez wszystkich suwak przezroczystości interfejsu, to może nadszedł czas, żeby naprawić też zakaz różnorodnych kształtów. Kafasis zgłosił to jako oficjalną sugestię do Apple pod numerem FB23388490, domyślając się przy tym, że taka sugestia z pewnością nie jest jedyna w swoim rodzaju.

Jego wpis kończy się krótko: „Free the icons”.

Czytając to wszystko, przypomniałem sobie, jak sam kiedyś organizowałem ekran główny swojego iPhone’a właśnie po kolorach i kształtach ikon, zanim jeszcze istniała możliwość robienia tego w bardziej ustrukturyzowany sposób. To była zabawa. Dziś, patrząc na wyciszony, jednolity ekran główny w stylu Liquid Glass, mam wrażenie, że coś z tej zabawy bezpowrotnie zniknęło. Design bywa najlepszy wtedy, gdy daje swobodę w granicach dobrego smaku, a nie wtedy, gdy narzuca jednolitość, która i tak nikogo nie przekonuje.

Chciałbym wierzyć, że Apple, tak jak zrobiło to z suwakiem przezroczystości, kiedyś posłucha tej krytyki i odda deweloperom przestrzeń, którą im odebrało. Na razie jednak pozostaje nam patrzeć na rząd identycznych kwadratokołów w Docku i wspominać czasy, kiedy jeden rzut oka wystarczał, żeby wiedzieć, w którą ikonę kliknąć.

Yep, apparently deleting '~/Library/Application Support/Audio Hijack 4/Recordings.plist' is a beautiful thing. I'm a VoiceOver user and I never use the Recordings tab in sessions, so why bother clogging up my storage space with that and slowing Hijack right down? I record several radio shows a week and also Zoom meetings etc, with recordings going to cloud services for storage and stored only in the Cloud and not offline (which makes it worse for performance), so it's not easy to keep all those cloud-stored recordings slowing it right down for me!

Weekend tinkering: build an absolutely non-THX-certified #Dolby #Atmos 7.1.4 setup with nothing but the Music app, Audio Midi Setup (AMS) and a bunch of disparate DACs, amps and speakers all handling some of the 12 channels. The relative magic here is that AMS will do the appropriate Atmos decoding which allows mapping of 5.1.2 or 7.1.4 channels to output devices of choice, grouped in an arbitrary aggregate virtual output device. Afterwards all that's left is a little latency correction with #AudioHijack and we're off! #LFG

🤔 Any other #AudioHijack users notice that since some recent update it's no longer able to fully capture the System AirPlay Receiver application input? The AirPlay source input is always audible no matter how much I tinker with the various advanced options, causing unpleasant delay effects because it is mixed with audio processed by the session's blocks. @RogueAmoeba anything I am missing?

Ok, so I got this workflow working! #AUdioHijack FTW! Set a schedule in AUdio Hijack Pro, press command+J to disable the output block. Put the URL you want to open in VLC and now i'm recording our local radio show every morning at 8AM.

Major new Audio Hijack update released today.

The new built-in Speech Denoise effects module is fantastic. I have lots of noisy RAID enclosure fans, and this is cleaning up the audio nicely. With very little lag/delay.

As it stands, my current sound board / music needs are closer to what is offered by #KenkuFM + #Discord than #Farrago. That combination does require a bunch of complicated setup, including #AudioHijack and #Loopback — at least if I want to pipe in anything not already handled by KenkuFM.
