@owen I don’t find it that bad with #stepca. It’s not exactly trivial, but it’s possible. If more things I run — or want to run — had a “step” client or #acme (and not just support for #LetsEncrypt), it would be much easier.

Starting to take shape: I’m combining PiKVM and a TESmart HKS0801A1U 8x1 HDMI KVM to access my homelab devices. I started with an unused Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, and just added the KVM.
Still sorting out how to get PiKVM to control input switching. The TESmart config utility (Windows only, “unhandled exception” errors) and networking (fixed IP address, no DHCP) leave a lot to be desired. Hopefully I can get remote input switching working.

If I use #incus directly on the Dell R530, I wonder if #truenasscale could run in a #vm. I would like to continue to have a file server and #truenas does that well enough for me.
Could I either pass through the storage to #truenas or could it use the storage in #incus (if I continue to use #zfs instead of one of the other filesystem options it has)?
-
I’m very interested in #incus and considering using it to manage #container and #vm in my #homelab. I’m currently using #truenasscale on a Dell R530. This is costly to run in terms of electricity, so I’m debating if I should move to one or more smaller/newer host devices.

Is there a way to mark a variable in Python as a secret, so that any output will mask/hide all or part of its value? I have been looking a bit and haven’t found a way yet. I’ve found some stuff about logging, but I’d like to do this for debugging-via-print() and other output methods, as well.
I know about getpass(). I’m not trying to mask/hide when getting user password input.

Brief searching hasn’t turned up anything, so I’ll ask here.
Is there a general data format that is
- both human and computer friendly, ideally
- extensible - base file, extended by one or more optional files
- layered - additional data can accurately reference the contents of the base data, or any other layer, to create/add/update/delete, and result in a final merged document
- useful for combining text (instructions, story), as well as automation (scripting) -

The good news is that I crimped the pins for my first JST-XH connector. Those pins are tiny!
The bad news is the fan didn’t work when connected. Didn’t spin, produced a fan fault. It’s a replacement for an Eaton rack UPS fan. Not a like for like replacement, but the best match I could find on DigiKey.
Not sure if my work or the fan is at fault.

This specific Siri command issue has been problematic since I got the OG HomePod. So, it’s been years.
I’ve reported feedback on it. It’s largely consistent, but there have been short stretches of time where it felt more reliable.
I truly hope this situation gets better sometime.

In comparison, my regular (old) HomePod and newer HomePod mini speakers have never done that (0% hit rate) and even “Play NPR News WHYY Philadelphia” — which is what Siri says it is playing when it gets it correct — is unreliable. It’s probably 60-70% hit rate. The failures almost always playing something I have never heard of and/or wouldn’t normally listen to.

I enabled Sonos Voice Control on a Sonos One speaker to try it out, compared to Siri on my HomePods.
It unfailing plays the correct radio station stream when I ask it to “Play WHYY.”

Probably due to the Super Bowl ads for the new season of the Halo TV series, I have become nostalgic for and interested in Halo again. (I was in the MWNY audience as Jason Jones double-clicked the “Blam32” icon.) I started watching S1 of the TV series. It does not vibe with my fond memories, but it has led me to some cool reminiscing.
