  1. @owen I don’t find it that bad with #stepca. It’s not exactly trivial, but it’s possible. If more things I run — or want to run — had a “step” client or #acme (and not just support for #LetsEncrypt), it would be much easier.

  6. Starting to take shape: I’m combining PiKVM and a TESmart HKS0801A1U 8x1 HDMI KVM to access my homelab devices. I started with an unused Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, and just added the KVM.

Still sorting out how to get PiKVM to control input switching. The TESmart config utility (Windows only, “unhandled exception” errors) and networking (fixed IP address, no DHCP) leave a lot to be desired. Hopefully I can get remote input switching working.

  7. Brief searching hasn’t turned up anything, so I’ll ask here.

Is there a general data format that is
    - both human and computer friendly, ideally
    - extensible - base file, extended by one or more optional files
    - layered - additional data can accurately reference the contents of the base data, or any other layer, to create/add/update/delete, and result in a final merged document
    - useful for combining text (instructions, story), as well as automation (scripting)

  8. The good news is that I crimped the pins for my first JST-XH connector. Those pins are tiny!

The bad news is the fan didn’t work when connected. Didn’t spin, produced a fan fault. It’s a replacement for an Eaton rack UPS fan. Not a like for like replacement, but the best match I could find on DigiKey.

Not sure if my work or the fan is at fault.

  9. This specific Siri command issue has been problematic since I got the OG HomePod. So, it’s been years.

I’ve reported feedback on it. It’s largely consistent, but there have been short stretches of time where it felt more reliable.

I truly hope this situation gets better sometime.

  10. In comparison, my regular (old) HomePod and newer HomePod mini speakers have never done that (0% hit rate) and even “Play NPR News WHYY Philadelphia” — which is what Siri says it is playing when it gets it correct — is unreliable. It’s probably 60-70% hit rate. The failures almost always playing something I have never heard of and/or wouldn’t normally listen to.

  11. I enabled Sonos Voice Control on a Sonos One speaker to try it out, compared to Siri on my HomePods.

It unfailing plays the correct radio station stream when I ask it to “Play WHYY.”

  12. I would like to thank @rgriff for putting up with Many Questions this week. I may have found a suitable replacement for Divvy.

Not exactly what I wanted, but I’m thinking it will do.

  14. Probably due to the Super Bowl ads for the new season of the Halo TV series, I have become nostalgic for and interested in Halo again. (I was in the MWNY audience as Jason Jones double-clicked the “Blam32” icon.) I started watching S1 of the TV series. It does not vibe with my fond memories, but it has led me to some cool reminiscing.

  15. I’ve been managing windows on my Macs with Divvy happily for … a decade? More? It fits my brain.

However, I’m in need of a modern app from a responsive developer that can manage windows in a similar fashion that combines a single keyboard shortcut to activate, and probably a graphical grid to divide up display space, where I use the pointer to select cells. Keyboard control of windows is secondary.

  16. I vote that the best ever commercial to feature Scarlett Johansson and two former Buffalo Bills players.

  17. I have a history with USB peripherals that provide Extra Buttons. Besides the El Gato Stream Deck, I have a Shuttle Pro (purchased at MacWorld NYC!) and a Belkin Nostromo SpeedPad n50. Various other USB button-festooned peripherals abound in a box.

I always have grand plans for extra buttons that are dashed against the hard reality of Figuring Out How to Program and Use the Peripheral.

  18. So far, I feel as if it’s easier to run git-annex wrong than it is to get it working correctly. Whatever I had working before is now failing.

  19. Is there anything like deep linking (appears limited to iOS, Android, UWP) to support custom URL schemes on Mac, Windows, and Linux? Would like to see internal URL scheme/links in Fantasty Grounds. docs.unity3d.com/2020.3/Docume

  21. Do the new Countdown Timers for Lutron Caséta dimmers and switches require cloud functionality to operate? Or are they fully local? Can Home Assistant see anything about these timers, if they are set?

  22. Is there a way to tell the that I’m using 100% — such as through the kind of power choice options some US states have — rather the default mix provided by the ? I haven’t figured out a way.

  23. I’d like to build an device for data collection/display during an extended .

    Ideas
    1. powered normally via /
    2. support second power source with AA/AAA battery backup: obtained easily, replaceable, no recharging
    3. collect from cheap/common (i.e. temp)
    4. does not require a network (i.e. network down in power outage)
    5. store data when is not available
    6. upload data later
    7. show information on a local

  24. I wish @siracusa used a MacBook Pro or trackpad more regularly — rather than a Microsoft Precision Mouse — because I’d ask if the trackpad reacts to Wristies in weird ways. Like activating the scroll bar to scroll up/down repeatedly.

  25. @rtyler I use the , which is under $10. Direct: dfrobot.com/product-1590.html Quicker US availability from at: digikey.com/short/wb8tj530 There are other options, including models with USB-C. If you don’t want to solder, cabling plus DFRobot sensors works. Worth checking out.

  26. @rtyler I’d have to look at the BOM, but I think all of my ESP32s with basic temp/humidity sensors have been under than price — even given the relatively high price for cabling — minus a fancy case and power source. I’ve repurposed leftover plastic containers with lids from the grocery store as cases, and just about any USB-A power adapter works. I run them with .

  27. I’m on Team Storage with @ismh as I’m listening to Connected’s “I Like Clock” ep. overcast.fm/+FXx4OZ0qI/58:05

This segment feels like the @tbridge intervention on one of our sessions when I brought up MBP storage prices / limitations and the failings of File Provider / file sync when it comes to expandable storage.

  28. @jamesthomson Apparently they now have some integrations with VTTs and D&D Beyond. ( user on macOS, myself.) Only heard about it after the site was nominated for the Ennie Awards. Seems great for more lightweight online and/or in-person games, especially for a youth game club (since no account is required).

  29. I suspect a secondary problem is that the UniFi in-wall units overheat. The dropout problem has been very bad this summer. It also seems to correspond to some of the warmest days. The UAP-U6IW dropped off for more than 24 hours over the weekend and was crazy hot when I finally got around to pulling it off the wall. I need to find a better way to monitor this, as I don’t see this info in the controller.

  30. Anyone know how to get SSH key passwords for ssh-agent to import into the “login” keychain on macOS, rather than into the “Local Items” keychain? (The “login” keychain is already set as the default, but that doesn’t seem to matter anymore.)
