  1. I’ve had a productive couple of days …

the #Atmos height channels are all now up in the air, and it makes a *huge* difference in how the system actually sounds.

It’s as if someone has lifted the roof off, and all this activity that was going on above my head is revealed …

clear as can be, like I’ve moved from #Flatland into the world of the third dimension. Woohoo! #3D

I still have some things to get sorted out; I need to pick up some more speaker wire, as some of the cables are now too short, and draping in the wrong places.

Some of my artwork will need to be moved … I may need to get creative and come up with new ideas to fill some of the spaces that are more sympatico with … you know, speakers on poles.

I feel like mentioning MakerStock.com, which was a great source for precision cut Baltic Birch plywood for the speaker mounts. I don’t have a wood shop, so they were a big help!

The #TTArtisan fisheye lens gets everything into the picture … and as you can see, my keyboards are happy with the change, and they’re smiling now, too. : )

Thanks for putting up with my babbling about this over multiple weeks and posts … it really has paid off in a major way – more than I let myself hope for.

It will take me a little while to pick up the #Sonarworks calibration software, but that will go a long way towards compensating for this less-than-optimal mixing environment.

  6. Following up on yesterday’s toot about #Atmos speaker mounts in progress …

I’ve added rubber strips to the bases, which will cushion the bottom surfaces of all the speakers.

On Sunday, FedEx is scheduled to deliver the wooden crosspieces on which the speakers will actually be mounted.

Like the bases, the crosspieces are fabricated from very nice Baltic Birch Plywood (makerstock.com capitalizes all of that, so why not).

There will be some careful work positioning and adjusting the screws the speakers hang from, but by Sunday evening I should be finished, and rejoicing in directional immersive audio from on high! Can’t wait.

  11. When we last visited the #studio

I had all the #Atmos speakers up on their stands, but they’re still horizontal, and pointing *up* at the ceiling. I’m working on the mounts I need to get them standing up, vertical, and pointing *down* at me.

Here’s how they’re looking at the moment:

Each mount still needs a 10” x 3” piece of plywood attached at the top of its two bars. (Those are being fabricated now.)

I’ll then drive a single screw right into the middle, with the head still protruding about 1/2” outside the surface of the wood.

Each speaker has a mounting keyhole on its back/underside; this will go over the head of the mounting screw, while the narrow bottom edge of the speaker rests on the bottom platform. (There’ll be a 1/8” sheet of rubber there to cushion it.)

Once that’s done, each mount and speaker will be lifted up on to its individual stand, and I’ll be working on music again!

(That is … if the speakers balance properly, like I believe they will. Fingers crossed …)

I know this is all a bit boring, but I’m extremely psyched!

  21. This isn’t just another picture of Lola in the studio …

it’s a step toward making my #DolbyAtmos system sound the way it’s really meant to.

Right now, I’m testing a new pair of speaker stands to see if they’re stable enough to do what I want to do with them. They are! Now I need two more pairs.

Just to be clear, this is the ^rear^ of the studio – it was a lot easier to access the speakers for a stand test than to start with the front.

I’ve raised the height channels so they’re closer to the ceiling, instead of sitting on top of the surround speakers …

but this is only step one. They’re still bouncing the audio off the ceiling – which is one of the modes they were designed for …

but what I need to do now is rotate them 90° so the backs are vertical, and the speakers are angled down at the center of the room, and firing directly at me. That’s the alternate mode, and the speakers have a crossover switch so that the EQ curves are proper for each one.

I think I know how to do it, but I’m still working on the final design. I’ll keep you posted. I live in an apartment, so I can’t just drill into the ceiling to mount them – hence the stands.

Lola is actually lying on one of my synthesizers … I have to negotiate with her if I want to use it.

  26. What's your #ProAudio heresy?

    Mine:

For music, stereo is perfectly adequate. We don't actually need #Atmos and most people won't listen to their music in an environment where it would be advantageous. I decline to spend any energy, time, or money on enabling myself to mix in it. Keep it in the movie theater where it belongs.
