  2. I’ve been running silent for a little while …

but I haven’t been idle. I’d like to announce an ambitious project:

over the next year-and-a-half to two years, I’m planning to compose and perform – for commercial release and distribution – a collection of immersive audio pieces I’m calling *Inexplicabilities*.

(Please forgive the blatant self-promotion … this is my baybay!)

I’ve got the beginnings of a web site up; here it is:

    inexplicabilities.com

  3. I’ve had a productive couple of days …

the #Atmos height channels are all now up in the air, and it makes a *huge* difference in how the system actually sounds.

It’s as if someone has lifted the roof off, and all this activity that was going on above my head is revealed …

clear as can be, like I’ve moved from #Flatland into the world of the third dimension. Woohoo! #3D

I still have some things to get sorted out; I need to pick up some more speaker wire, as some of the cables are now too short, and draping in the wrong places.

Some of my artwork will need to be moved … I may need to get creative and come up with new ideas to fill some of the spaces that are more sympatico with … you know, speakers on poles.

I feel like mentioning MakerStock.com, which was a great source for precision cut Baltic Birch plywood for the speaker mounts. I don’t have a wood shop, so they were a big help!

The #TTArtisan fisheye lens gets everything into the picture … and as you can see, my keyboards are happy with the change, and they’re smiling now, too. : )

Thanks for putting up with my babbling about this over multiple weeks and posts … it really has paid off in a major way – more than I let myself hope for.

It will take me a little while to pick up the #Sonarworks calibration software, but that will go a long way towards compensating for this less-than-optimal mixing environment.

  4. Following up on yesterday’s toot about #Atmos speaker mounts in progress …

I’ve added rubber strips to the bases, which will cushion the bottom surfaces of all the speakers.

On Sunday, FedEx is scheduled to deliver the wooden crosspieces on which the speakers will actually be mounted.

Like the bases, the crosspieces are fabricated from very nice Baltic Birch Plywood (makerstock.com capitalizes all of that, so why not).

There will be some careful work positioning and adjusting the screws the speakers hang from, but by Sunday evening I should be finished, and rejoicing in directional immersive audio from on high! Can’t wait.

  5. This isn’t just another picture of Lola in the studio …

it’s a step toward making my #DolbyAtmos system sound the way it’s really meant to.

Right now, I’m testing a new pair of speaker stands to see if they’re stable enough to do what I want to do with them. They are! Now I need two more pairs.

Just to be clear, this is the ^rear^ of the studio – it was a lot easier to access the speakers for a stand test than to start with the front.

I’ve raised the height channels so they’re closer to the ceiling, instead of sitting on top of the surround speakers …

but this is only step one. They’re still bouncing the audio off the ceiling – which is one of the modes they were designed for …

but what I need to do now is rotate them 90° so the backs are vertical, and the speakers are angled down at the center of the room, and firing directly at me. That’s the alternate mode, and the speakers have a crossover switch so that the EQ curves are proper for each one.

I think I know how to do it, but I’m still working on the final design. I’ll keep you posted. I live in an apartment, so I can’t just drill into the ceiling to mount them – hence the stands.

Lola is actually lying on one of my synthesizers … I have to negotiate with her if I want to use it.

  6. Inzwischen gibt es wirklich viel geiles Zeug im Bereich #LinuxGaming. Heute gefunden: #IrateGoose um mit wenigen Klicks #Surround bzw. #Raumklang via #Pipewire einrichten. 🎵 🎧

  7. Live recordings can be hit and miss with this treatment, but this Morphine bootleg recorded at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit that just appeared on Apple Music does particularly well 😍 music.apple.com/us/album/bootl #Surround #AudioHijack

  8. Sure, you can take a break from work and go for a walk but have you ever tried building a Stereo -> 7.1.4 #Surround #AudioHijack flow to relax instead? Yeah no, me neither 🥴🎛️

  9. Hoping maybe the #Fediverse hive mind has some ideas about a problem.

My old workhorse Onkyo AV receiver died a few months back, and I replaced it with a Denon AVR-S970H. And it's driving me nuts.

My #TV is old, from the final generation of plasmas. Great picture. Sound is okay, but it only understands stereo and mono in uncompressed or AC-3 formats. Anything else sent to it - different codec, or multichannel/surround - is ignored and you get no sound. But that's okay!

Most of the things I watch that have stereo sound I just want to listen to through the TV anyways - TV shows, old non-spectacle movies, documentaries, all that sort of stuff. When I have a Big Movie with a #surround soundtrack, that's when I want to listen to it through the fancy speakers and the #AVR.

With my old #Onkyo, this was easy: the receiver always played the sound through itself and also sent it to the TV. If I wanted simple stereo, I'd just mute the receiver. If it was a surround sound thing, the TV just ignored it.

The #Denon... doesn't do this. I have to configure whether to output the sound through the TV, or through the AVR. There's no option for "both".
