There are a lot of stupid things about American health insurance, but the notion of ambulance services being out of network is a unique level of stupid.

An elderly man collapsed on the sidewalk this morning. We helped him sit up. He wanted to go to his car (a very bad idea) but even with us holding him up he couldn't walk and sank back down to the sidewalk. I went to the urgent care *right next door* for help but, alas, for liability reasons they could not help.
But it's okay. At least the receptionist looked appropriately uncomfortable. </snark>
We called 911 and an ambulance showed up to take over his care.

#NursingHomes in the United States are absolutely vile places. My coworkers are on the edge of quitting due to bureaucratic neglect, institutional neglect of residence.
