  2. WR Advisory Group: Philippines Very Risky for Investors

Based on its research covering a wide range of economic factors, financial readings and the public’s perception of governance, the WR Advisory Group finds the Philippines very risky for investors, according to a news report by the Manila Bulletin.

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the Manila Bulletin report. Some parts in boldface…

Investing in the Philippines is expected to be “very risky” in the coming months, driven by economic uncertainties and growing political dissatisfaction with the Marcos administration, according to professional services firm WR Advisory Group.

Based on its inaugural Philippine Political and Country Outlook Report, WR Advisory Group assigned the country a score of 10.375 out of 25, placing it at an elevated risk level with a deteriorating outlook.

WR Advisory Group President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Robin Michael Garcia said the score indicates that investing in the country carries heightened risk due to ongoing economic and political factors.

“You can invest, but just know that there are risks. So if you see a potential opportunity in this period, it’s going to be risky,” Garcia said in a media briefing on Thursday, Oct. 22.

Regarding the country’s economic outlook, he noted a strong possibility of stagflation, a scenario marked by simultaneous high inflation and elevated unemployment.

Garcia added that these risks are further compounded by national government debt, which reached ₱19.07 trillion at the end of July, equivalent to 66 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Economic growth also slowed to 2.3 percent in the second quarter, while inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) dropped by more than 33 percent through May.

Garcia warned that stagflation is a real possibility, particularly if the government “does not pay enough attention to economic management and economic policy.”

“The more that we think about other things, the more that the attention is going everywhere, except for solving this potential scenario,” he stressed.

Much of that focus, according to Garcia, has shifted to political controversies, including the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.

While clarifying that he was not questioning the validity of the impeachment, he explained that the proceedings come at a time when Congress should be prioritizing legislative reforms to address the country’s economic challenges.

“At this time, there are a lot of economic issues. Firms care more about economic legislation and economic policy rather than mere politics,” Garcia said.

He identified politically sensitive sectors, including energy, telecommunications, mining, and banking, as the most vulnerable to these heightened risks.

The report also noted that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s performance ratings continue to decline, while frequent turnover in his Cabinet poses additional stability risks for businesses.

“Senate confidence also deteriorated sharply, adding institutional strain to an already weak legislative and regulatory environment,” the report stated.

These factors are accompanied by a negative assessment of national conditions, with 68 percent of Filipinos saying that the Philippines is going in the wrong direction, according to the report.

Let me end this post by asking you readers: What is your reaction to this recent development? Do you think the WR Advisory Group is correct with its analysis about the Philippines being very risky for investors? Are you convinced that foreign investors are avoiding the Philippines right now? Do you think the Philippines is going towards the wrong direction now?

TITLE: LSD pushes brain activity toward a more fractal, complex state, study finds

    URL: psypost.org/lsd-pushes-brain-a

A new neuroimaging study indicates that lysergic acid diethylamide, commonly known as LSD, alters human brain activity not just by weakening regular brain waves, but also by speeding them up and making neural signals more complex. The weakening of brain waves and the rise in signal complexity were most pronounced in regions tied to sensory processing, language, emotion, and mental imagery, while areas that control physical movement were largely spared. The findings, published in Communications Biology, also hint that listening to music may dampen rather than amplify these drug-induced changes, though that trend did not hold up after statistical correction.

LSD is a potent psychedelic drug that temporarily alters perception, mood, and the sense of self. Like other classic psychedelics, it works primarily by attaching to and activating serotonin 2A receptors on brain cells, though LSD also binds to dopamine receptors. Studying how this compound changes large-scale brain activity helps scientists understand the biological processes that generate conscious experience.

In human studies, researchers often use magnetoencephalography, or MEG, to track the fast-paced electrical activity of the brain. MEG is a non-invasive procedure where a participant sits with their head inside a helmet-like scanner containing sensitive magnetic detectors. As groups of neurons fire together, they produce tiny magnetic fields that the scanner records at a millisecond-by-millisecond scale.

This electrical activity consists of two main types of signals: rhythmic brain waves and background noise. Rhythmic waves, or neural oscillations, happen when thousands of brain cells fire in a synchronized beat, much like a choir singing a specific note. Two of the most common resting rhythms are alpha waves, which cycle at about 8 to 13 times per second (measured in hertz, or Hz) during relaxed wakefulness, and beta waves, which cycle faster at 15 to 30 Hz and relate to active thinking and alertness. These rhythms ride on top of non-rhythmic, background electrical activity that naturally loses strength at higher frequencies.

Previous psychedelic studies consistently showed that drugs like LSD and psilocybin cause a widespread drop in the strength of alpha and beta waves, a process called cortical desynchronization. Because traditional brain wave analyses measure activity within fixed frequency windows, they can confuse a change in wave speed with a loss of wave strength, or mistake shifts in the background noise for changes in actual rhythms. If an alpha wave speeds up against a background that naturally falls off at higher frequencies, it can look as though the wave lost strength when it actually just shifted to a faster tempo.

Beyond brain wave speed and strength, psychedelics also change the unpredictability and structure of brain signals over time. Scientists measure this using two mathematical tools: Lempel-Ziv complexity, which counts how many new and distinct patterns appear in a signal over time, and Higuchi fractal dimension, which measures how “rough” or self-similar a signal looks when zoomed in and out across different time scales. Higher scores on both metrics indicate richer, less predictable brain activity.

The physical and social environment also plays a major role in shaping a psychedelic experience, with music frequently used in both traditional rituals and modern psychedelic-assisted therapy. For example, a study covered by PsyPost in 2018 showed that LSD heightened brain responses to music across regions tied to auditory processing, emotion, and memory. The new research was led by first author Venkatesh Subramani, who holds a doctorate in neuroscience, and senior author Karim Jerbi, a full professor in the psychology department, both of the Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience Laboratory (CoCo Lab) at the Université de Montréal. The team aimed to separate true changes in brain wave strength from shifts in wave speed and background activity, while also testing how music interacts with these electrical signatures.

“A characteristic effect of classic psychedelics is the desynchronization of rhythmic brain activity (that is, reduced coordination of activity among neural populations) in the alpha (8-13 Hz) and beta (15-30 Hz) bands,” Subramani told PsyPost. “LSD, however, appears somewhat unique because it also speeds up these intrinsic oscillations, by up to 2 Hz for alpha and up to 5 Hz for beta. This acceleration creates an ambiguity: it is unclear whether LSD genuinely desynchronizes these rhythms, or whether the previously reported desynchronization is an artifact of shifts in the spectral peaks.”

To investigate these questions, the researchers analyzed existing MEG data originally collected from 17 healthy volunteers. The experiment used a within-subject, single-blind, placebo-controlled design with a counterbalanced session order, meaning each participant completed two separate scanning sessions spaced 14 days apart without being told which treatment they were receiving. In one session, participants received an intravenous injection of 75 micrograms of LSD, and in the other, they received an inactive saline placebo.

Roughly four hours after the injection, participants underwent MEG brain scans under two different conditions, each lasting seven minutes. In the first condition, they rested with their eyes closed in silence. In the second condition, they kept their eyes closed while listening to ambient music excerpts. The research team used anatomical MRI scans of each participant’s head to map the MEG signals onto 360 distinct regions across the outer surface of the brain.

The authors then used a specialized mathematical tool to separate the rhythmic brain waves from the non-rhythmic background activity in each brain region. Instead of measuring wave strength inside rigid frequency boxes, they tracked the exact peak frequency where each participant’s alpha and beta waves were strongest. They also calculated Lempel-Ziv complexity and Higuchi fractal dimension for each region, and trained machine learning algorithms to see which brain features best distinguished the LSD state from the placebo state.

When the researchers separated the rhythmic waves from the background noise and accounted for shifting frequencies, they found that LSD still caused a genuine drop in the strength of alpha and beta waves. Alpha wave weakening was most pronounced in the temporal lobes, while beta wave weakening occurred broadly across the brain’s surface. However, ignoring the shifting frequencies made the wave weakening look much more widespread than it actually was, confirming that standard methods can inflate the apparent spatial extent of the drug’s effect.

“This study clarifies the ambiguity,” Subramani explained. “It shows that the weakening of oscillations, the usual marker of desynchronization, is genuine even after accounting for the peak shifts, a potential confound.”

Separating the signals also clarified what was happening in the posterior cingulate cortex, a major hub for self-reflection and daydreaming. In standard analyses that mix all signals together, this hub showed large drops in brain wave power under LSD. Once the background noise was removed, those rhythmic differences vanished, indicating that LSD mainly altered the background electrical activity in this region rather than its synchronized waves.

Alongside weakening the waves, LSD systematically sped them up across large portions of the brain. On average, the peak frequency of alpha waves increased by about 2 Hz, while beta wave peaks shifted upward by roughly 5 Hz. Machine learning models trained solely on these frequency shifts were able to correctly identify whether a scan came from an LSD or placebo session with over 82 percent accuracy, where chance would be 50 percent.

The background electrical activity also flattened out across the brain, meaning there was less slow background activity relative to fast activity. At the same time, both Lempel-Ziv complexity and fractal dimension rose substantially, especially in the back of the brain where visual information is processed. Machine learning decoders using these complexity and fractal measures distinguished the LSD state from placebo with over 76 percent accuracy, compared to a 50 percent chance level.

“In plain terms, LSD makes the brain’s main rhythms faster and weaker, and makes its activity more complex,” Subramani noted.

These results align with research covered by PsyPost in 2024, which examined brain activity under microdoses using EEG rather than full psychedelic doses using MEG, and similarly found that LSD increases neural signal complexity. The broader shift away from slower rhythms is also in line with a study covered by PsyPost in March 2026, which examined scalp EEG activity following psilocybin rather than source-resolved MEG following LSD and found that the drug weakened slower theta and alpha waves while strengthening faster beta and gamma activity. That study measured the strength of different frequency bands rather than the speed of individual rhythms, however, and the authors of the new paper note that a clear speeding of alpha and beta peaks has not been consistently observed with psilocybin.

To understand how these electrical changes relate to everyday mental functions, the researchers compared their brain maps against a massive database of over 14,000 prior brain imaging studies. They found that LSD’s effects followed distinct functional hierarchies across different brain systems. Reductions in alpha and beta wave strength, background flattening, and complexity increases were strongest in networks tied to vision, hearing, language, emotion, and mental imagery, while the motor cortex, which controls physical movement, remained largely unaffected.

The weakening and speeding of brain waves did not always line up. The functional systems that showed the largest drop in alpha wave strength, such as auditory and language networks, showed only minimal alpha speeding, while motor and attention networks retained relatively more of their alpha strength but showed the largest increases in alpha speed. In the beta range, the pattern reversed, with the biggest speed-ups occurring where beta strength dropped the most. Because the two effects were not statistically linked across the brain, the authors suggest that wave weakening and wave acceleration may reflect separate processes happening at the same time.

When the researchers examined the effect of music, they did not find any results that survived strict statistical corrections for multiple comparisons across the whole brain. However, uncorrected trends pointed in the opposite direction of what the team initially expected. Instead of boosting the brain effects of LSD, listening to music tended to slightly calm them down, resulting in less background flattening and lower signal complexity compared to experiencing LSD in silence.

The authors suggested that music might act as an external attentional anchor. Building on a 2024 analysis of this same dataset that found psychedelic-induced signal complexity was highest with eyes closed and dropped when attention turned outward, they propose that resting in silence allows the mind to wander freely into unconstrained internal states, whereas focusing on an external structured sound may gently ground and stabilize the brain’s electrical activity.

“Music can be very emotionally powerful, and music and psychedelics have been used together in rituals across many cultures,” Subramani said. “We wanted to formally test how music modulates the way LSD affects the brain. We hypothesized that music potentiates the effect of the drug. Somewhat surprisingly, and albeit not statistically robust, we found the opposite trend: music appeared to reduce the drug effect, which could suggest that the stimulus acts as an anchor that keeps subjects from fully experiencing the psychedelic state.”

“As noted in the paper, this is only hypothesis-generating,” he added. “It calls for studies with more subjects and targeted experimental designs with better controls.” He cautioned that “the music result is exploratory and should not be over-interpreted.”

There are a few things to keep in mind when interpreting these results. The study relied on a relatively small sample of 17 participants, which limits the statistical power needed to detect subtle interactions between the drug and external factors like music. In addition, the MEG scans were recorded about four hours after the LSD injection, roughly two and a half hours after the drug’s subjective effects had peaked. This timing gap may explain why the researchers found few strong links between the brain measurements and participants’ questionnaire ratings.

Looking at music over a single seven-minute average also treats a dynamic song as if it were a static event. Future studies with larger groups could track how brain waves respond to changing musical moments in real time, and use muscle sensors to help rule out muscle activity as a source of the fastest brain signals. Comparing LSD directly with other psychedelics using these same signal-separation methods will also help determine whether speeding up alpha and beta rhythms is a unique signature of LSD’s pharmacology.

The team is already extending their analytical approach to see how these faster brain wave frequencies might affect other common measures of brain communication, such as functional connectivity, which tracks how closely pairs of brain regions coordinate their activity over time.

“This study shows that LSD shifts the oscillatory peaks and that there is a genuine weakening of oscillations beyond these shifts,” Subramani said. “Power is one measure that could be confounded by peak shifts. Another is functional connectivity between pairs of brain regions. We have been actively working on this, and a preprint will be out shortly!”

The study, “LSD reconfigures cortical dynamics through faster brain rhythms and increased fractal dimension,” was authored by Venkatesh Subramani, Timothy Nest, Annalisa Pascarella, Jérémy Brunel, Yorguin José Mantilla Ramos, Yann Harel, Suresh Muthukumaraswamy, Robin Carhart-Harris, Giulia Lioi, Nicolas Farrugia, and Karim Jerbi.

  4. Basis Grotesque Font Family Colophon Foundry

Basis Grotesque is the best-behaved grotesque I have seen in years, and I mean that as high praise. I tested the Basis Grotesque font family for several weeks. I set it in a magazine layout and a product interface. Then I pushed it into a pitch deck and a code-heavy documentation page. Each time I waited for a quirk to surface. None did.

The font family is available on MyFonts.

Design teams have grown tired of geometric sans serifs that all look alike. They want a grotesque with a real backbone and good manners. Colophon Foundry released Basis Grotesque in 2015. Variable and Arabic editions followed in 2024. The family now suits brands that publish in print and on screens in more than one script.

Basis Grotesque Font Family by Colophon Foundry The font family is available on MyFonts.

What Is Basis Grotesque and Who Made It?

Basis Grotesque is a grotesque sans serif family from Colophon Foundry. The London type studio also makes Aperçu and Fann Grotesque. The founders, Anthony Sheret and Edd Harrington, drew the original. The release credits also name Jelle Bosma, Steve Matteson and Robin Nicholas.

The family began as one regular weight. Colophon drew it for the redesign of the photography magazine Hotshoe. Work started around 2012, and the commercial release followed in 2015. Three years of refinement turned a house font into a full system.

Why Did a Photography Magazine Start It?

Photography magazines need a type that stays quiet next to images. A loud typeface competes with the photograph, and the photograph always wins. I read that brief in every curve of Basis Grotesque. It never shouts.

What Does the Basis Grotesque Family Include?

Colophon describes the family as 16 styles. The sans runs from light to black with matching italics. Two monospaced cuts in Regular and Bold, also with italics, sit alongside it. An off-white variant handles the type on solid-color grounds. Every Pro style adds Cyrillic and Greek, and the OpenType feature set is extensive.

Why Is Basis Grotesque a Behaved Grotesque?

Behaved Grotesque is my label for a grotesque with the attitude of early sans serifs and none of their layout trouble. Basis Grotesque fits that definition exactly. Colophon took inspiration from Akzidenz and early Monotype grotesques. Then it set them aside while honoring them, aiming for something calmer and more shapely.

I like that restraint. Revival fonts often copy every blemish and call it authenticity. Basis Grotesque keeps the tone of the originals and skips the blemishes.

Next to Helvetica Neue, it feels warmer. Next to Akzidenz-Grotesk, it feels calmer. That is a personal judgment, and I stand by it.

How Does the Skeleton Lock in Basis Grotesque Work?

Skeleton Lock is my term for weights that share one skeleton. A weight change alters color but never construction. Colophon designed Basis Grotesque this way on purpose. It is the single most useful thing about the family.

So, I ran a simple weight-swap test, and I set a headline in regular, then switched the same text frame to bold and black. The letters kept the same proportions and the same rhythm through every swap, so the headline still read as one voice even though the color of the page had changed completely, which almost never happens with weights drawn at different times by different hands.

Widths grow with weight, as they must. Still, no letter changed its structure. That is rare.

The consistency pays off in hierarchy. I set a Light title above a Medium subhead on one baseline grid. The pair looked like one voice. Because the skeleton stays fixed, a designer can build an entire hierarchy from one family, from a light display line to a black pull number, and the result still feels as if a single author wrote every level of the page.

Why does this matter for brands? A system that needs only one family saves licensing fees and review meetings. It also removes the most common source of typographic drift, which is a second font that nobody chose on purpose.

How Did Basis Grotesque Perform in My Four-Surface Check?

The Four-Surface Check is my method for judging a sans serif. I test it in print, on screen, in a presentation, and in code. A family that works on two surfaces is a good font. A family that works on four is a system.

    Print

In print, Regular carried 9 pt body text with an even gray. Italic added emphasis without any wobble.

    Screen

On screen, Medium worked well for interface labels. The letters stayed open at small sizes.

    Presentation

In the deck, Black made key numbers hard to ignore. Light gave the captions room to breathe.

Code and Data With Basis Grotesque Mono

Basis Grotesque Mono sat beside the proportional cuts without a clash. That pairing saves a design system from adding a second family just for tables and code.

What Is the Basis Grotesque Off White Variant For?

Colophon created an off-white variant for use on solid color grounds. Few families bother. Most designers reverse the regular cut to white and accept whatever happens.

I like this idea more than any other feature in the family. Type on a color field behaves differently than type on paper. I read the purpose as a fix for the glare that pure white creates against deep tones. A dedicated cut treats that glare as a design problem rather than an afterthought.

If your brand uses a dark green or charcoal as its main ground, test this cut first. It may settle an argument before the argument starts.

Is the Basis Grotesque Variable Font Worth the Price?

The Basis Grotesque Variable edition arrived in March 2024. The family has two styles, which I read as upright and italic, each carrying the full weight range. A single file replaces a stack of static weights. That means lighter pages and finer control over every size.

Each style costs $384, and the pair costs $768. That price targets teams, not hobbyists. For a brand with a website and a print program, one family that covers every weight makes sense.

The Basis Grotesque Arabic Variable edition arrived the same month, from $320 per style. It uses open counters and a mono-linear, low-contrast design. Those choices suit both large display sizes and small screen text.

Which Fonts Pair Well With Basis Grotesque?

Pair it with a serif that has real contrast. Canela gives display lines sharp edges. Plantin gives long text a warm, bookish voice. Both let Basis Grotesque play the calm partner.

For data, use Basis Grotesque Mono instead of a stranger from another foundry. The shared skeleton keeps tables and headlines on speaking terms.

Where Is Basis Grotesque Heading Before 2027?

Prediction one. Behaved grotesques will replace geometric sans serifs in many mid-market brand systems by the end of 2027. Basis Grotesque is the clearest model of why.

Prediction two. Other foundries will copy the off-white idea. Designers have waited long enough for a cut built for color grounds.

Prediction three. Colophon will add more scripts to the Basis Grotesque system after Arabic. The 2024 releases read like the start of a multi-script plan.

  8. Saw there's a new Robin Hood movie from 2026! Exciting, Robin Hood was a childhood hero of mine 🥹 checked the wikipedia page.

Title: The death of Robin Hood (noooo 😭)
Subtitle: He was no hero (wtf?!)
Part of plot description: Living alone in the wilderness and troubled by his murderous past, the aged Robin dismisses the tales that have made him a folk hero

Tell me there's more to that than what it reeks of.

Though I have to admit it feels like the most 2026 thing ever to have a movie telling us that a folk legend that stole from the rich to give it to the poor was a criminal.

  21. Maymont Mansion: Amazing Gilded Age Historic Home

Maymont, a mansion in Richmond, Virginia, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Virginia Landmark. Dating to 1893, the Gilded Age mansion was the lavish home built for James and Sallie May (Maymont) Dooley.

    Linda’s Pick of the Exhibits

First of all, the mansion is spectacular! It’s probably one of the most lavish historic buildings I’ve ever visited, including some European palaces and castles. It definitely rivals the Hearst Castle in California.

So, picking a favorite room was tough. However, I have to say it was the dining room that “spoke” the loudest to me in the end.

Why? Probably because the room and place settings do an amazing job of showcasing the lifestyles of the era’s high society.

Of course, the room is filled with paintings and sculptures and ornate furnishings. But it was the place settings that really amazed me.

I was used to the forks, knives, and spoons for each course. What I wasn’t familiar with was the range of glassware.

Place setting in the dining room of the Maymont Mansion. Photo by Linda Aksomitis.

It was obvious that each type of glass, like each piece of silverware, was designed for a specific purpose. So this table was set for four different types of wine or sherry or champagne.

What types of glasses were used in late 1800s?

Research showed me that I was correct!

    • Claret glass: A larger stemmed glass designed for serving Bordeaux red wine (claret).
    • Wine hock: A tall, often green or amber, stemmed glass used for German Rhine wines or hock.
    • Sherry / Port glass: Often called cordials, these smaller, narrow-bowled stemmed glasses served fortified wines like sherry or port.
    • Champagne glass: A glass that was broad, shallow and saucer-like or a tall fluted glass.
    • Rummer: A heavy short-stemmed glass used to serve wines, punches, or grog.
    • Bohemian glass: A gold-bodied glass with dark, geometric “inserts” or windows known as panels or cabochons used to serve post-dinner liqueurs or cordials.
    • Goblet: A general term for formal stemmed glasses.

Hmm, so if I was to guess, I’d say:

    • The clear glass on the left was a claret glass. The hosts would have served the Bordeaux red wine in it with first courses.
    • The red glass with designs is a wine hock glass. The stem with the two triangular shapes meeting in the middle is described as a waisted hexagon/facet cut. Its deep red bowl is ruby or cranberry glass with detailed gold etching, making the glass late 1800s Victorian Bohemian crystal. Hosts would have served German Rhine wines in it for middle courses.
    • The glass with the deeper bowl was a classic British rummer. Hosts would have served a table wine, flip, or mulled punch for last courses.
    • The last glass is a cute little Bohemian glass. It would have been used for a final dessert-type drink of a liqueur or cordial.

    What’s at the Maymont Mansion?

The Maymont Mansion was a bequest to the city of Richmon from Sallie Dooley, fulfilling her husband’s wishes in 1925. What was in the bequest? One hundred acres to be used as a free park for city residents to enjoy. The mansion and its furnishings.

Eventually, of course, the mansion deteriorated without a cash fund to maintain it. A restoration began, and in 1975 the Maymont Foundation was established to care for the estate that’s still owned by the city. In 2025, the Foundation also did an additional 11.75 million restoration.

    Maymont Mansion

The Maymont Mansion is built in a Romanesque Revival style. It has 33 rooms, with a number of the formal rooms included in the house tour. While 33 rooms sounds like the Mansion should be enormous, a number of the rooms are actually quite small. Twelve of the rooms are restored and open to the public.

Of course, the furnishings are amazing, being all original. In total, Maymont says the bequeathed collection totals 949 objects and the library has 1226 volumes from the Dooley’s library.

Ever dreamt of owning a collection of Tiffany pieces? A Style Weekly article indicated that the Maymont collection is the most complete, intact historic site from the period when Tiffany’s was the country’s most prestigious source of luxury goods!

While the guided tour ends with the formal rooms, visitors also have access to the domestic service rooms.

This area provides an interesting contrast between the lifestyles of the rich and the servants who made their lives easier.

Fast Fact: During the Guilded Age, the employment of an English butler became the ultimate status symbol in the North. In the South, menservants were hired more often than in other regions. However, men made up a small percentage of household workers overall. By 1893, less than 10% of Richmond’s domestic labor force was male. As domestic staff, men received higher wages and served in more visible positions than women. Butlers were valued not only for their skills but also for a polished demeanor.

    The Grounds

The areas near the mansion include historic lawns and gardens, the Carriage House and water tower, and the barn and welcome center.

    Highlights include:

    • The Japanese Garden with its waterfall, bridge, lanterns and pavilions.
    • The Via Florum and Italian Garden walkway of flowers between the terraced garden and the mansion.
    • The three-story brick and granite barn that serves as a welcome center.
    • The Dooley mausoleum where the couple is buried.

    More on the Estate

The park, like the rest of the estate, is a beautiful greenspace. You’ll find:

    • Robins Nature Center: A building with nearly 30,000 gallons of aquaria showcasing animals native to the James River and Chesapeake Bay.
    • Virginia Wildlife Trail: Outdoor habitats for black bears, bison, a bobcat, deer, foxes, coyotes, porcupines, and raptors.
    • Maymont Farm: A children’s farm with hands-on animal encounters.
Fast Fact: Before the Dooleys built the mansion the land had been a rural dairy farm overlooking the James River. The estate added Maymont Farm in 1903.

    Linda’s Road Trip Tips

Richmond is an amazing city to visit! I found it friendly, both in terms of talking to local people and in city features such as free buses.

People were quick to help, without being asked, whenever I was confused walking or picking a bus route. Leaving the Amtrak station the staircase to the street is high, and while I was struggling to get my bags down them, a teen sitting on the other side just stood and carried them down for me.

But the gem to me was getting to the Mansion. My Uber had dropped me at the wrong entrance, so I was walking to get to my scheduled tour. I asked various people for help, which was always given. However, when I asked an older resident how far away I was, she simply got her car keys and gave me a ride! Now that’s A++ for a directionally challenged tourist!

I stayed at the very comfortable Omni Richmond Hotel downtown in the historic Shockoe Slip District. It was close, just a short walk, to the Greater Richmond Convention Center. On the way, I walked through the historic Capitol Square.

Bison meatloaf. Photo by Linda Aksomitis.

And meals? While I had many tasty ones, the best one was at Southern Railway Taphouse in Shockoe Slip. It’s a restaurant and bar with a patio facing the canal. My dinner? An excellent bison meatloaf. It was served with caramelized shallot gravy, garlic mashed potatoes, and sautéed green beans. Delicious!

    Who Should Visit Maymont Mansion?

Maymont Mansion is an amazing attraction for Gilded Age and architecture fans. With its luxury and opulence preserved for 135+ years, the mansion can’t help but impress even the most well-traveled visitor.

    Pin me!

Anyone who loves decorative arts or is a Tiffany enthusiast will also find lots of treasures to keep them fascinated. Since visitors see both the elite lifestyle and the worker lifestyle, there are great insights into what separated the classes.

I wouldn’t recommend the mansion for families with small children. Strollers aren’t permitted due to the size of rooms and walkways.

Likewise, due to the historic integrity of the well-preserved home, tours aren’t wheelchair accessible.

However, the Robins Nature Center is fully wheelchair and stroller accessible. The gardens have limited access in some portions.

When it comes to time, I spent an hour-and-a-half going through the mansion. I didn’t, however, go anywhere on the grounds other than the walkway from the parking area.

How Do You Visit Maymont Mansion?

There are three entrances to Maymont Mansion. Access the mansion at the Hampton Street Entrance (1700 Hampton Street), the Robins Nature Center through the Shields Lake Drive Entrance (2201 Shields Lake Drive in Byrd Park), and the Children’s Farm and Wildlife Exhibits at the Spottswood Entrance near the Boulevard Bridge.

Parking: The Hampton Street Entrance and Shields Drive Entrance both have free parking areas.

Street address: 1700 Hampton Street (Maymont Mansion), Richmond, Virginia.

Find hours and days open (typically just Thursday-Sundays) on the Maymont website.

Keep up to date with what’s happening on the Maymont Facebook page.

Wynika to z konkretnych powodów.

    Sława i zasięgi

Piszę do programistów z prośbą o udostępnianie sum SHA aplikacji, ponieważ Obtainium (rekomendowane obok Accrescent i Google Play) wymaga od użytkownika samodzielnej weryfikacji. Kiedy Łącze rekomenduje aplikacje, ZAWSZE podaje SHA.

    POMOC

Pomocni i skromni. Dziękuję wam za to. 🤍

  26. ## The fossil fuel playbook: How coal and gas bought time, and how to take it back

Following on from #DavidPocock’s appearance at the National Press Club where the ACT Senator spoke about lobbysts, the Klaxon has published an article by Robyn Gulliver which exposes, along with *revolving door* golden parachutes, and working both sides of politics with significant *donations* to both major parties, the extent to which Parliaments (Federal, State and Territory) are swamped with ephemeral *lobbyists* stood up as needed with each new policy and legislation which seek to regulate or tax #ExtractiveIndustries business activities (fossil fuel industries included).

Recalling Sen Pocock’s call for limiting and regulating lobbyists access to Ministers and their Staff.

    > “While political donations make headlines, daily influence happens out of sight. Integrity experts estimate about 80 per cent of federal lobbying falls outside the rules, shielded by an exemption that excludes in-house corporate lobbyists from registration requirements.

    > Multinational giants like Santos do not appear on the federal register at all.

    > State-level surges reveal how surgical this access is: our analysis showed gas lobbying registrations more than doubled in Victoria and surged five-fold in South Australia during the lead-up to proposed municipal gas bans, only to evaporate once the votes settled.

    > Transparency International scores Australia’s federal lobbying oversight system and abysmal 17 out of 100, and to date, not a single lobbyist has faced sanction despite recorded breaches.”

    As the author reminds us:
    > It would be easy to despair. But the playbook works best in the dark, and the lights are coming on.

    I certainly hope so.
