  8. and we’re walking…

It occurred to me earlier today that this will be the first full calendar year I've gone without some sort of employment since 1991, the year I turned 15. Earlier today I went for a walk at a local hiking trail that was refreshing in a way that just isn't the same when working full time, and something I'm not sure I want to put off until typical retirement age.

  15. Proton hosts a public map of Flock surveillance devices that you can search by ZIP code. It doesn't host the underlying dataset, which comes from independent researcher Joshua Michael.

According to Proton, his inventory lists more than 170,000 cameras and over 130,000 other Flock devices. It's a December 2025 snapshot, so later installs and removals aren't shown.

Would you look up your ZIP code?

  16. I've always been dubious of the idea that an AI bubble popping would a lot of stranded hardware. the neoclouds COULD use their older GPUs for lots of things that aren't frontier models, but I don't think they're nimble enough. Meanwhile, hyperscalers like Microsoft are busy doing just that to speed up database queries.

GPU acceleration isn't new; nor are GPU-accelerated databases but they've never been mainstream @andrewbrust notes. you need a second SQL engine or switch to an engine most people haven't heard of. Microsoft putting it right into the Fabric platform as a switch speeds up existing SQL queries with no editing required.

The really clever bit: you don't need the latest, most expensive GPUs to speed up your database so it can keep up with all the extra queries agents are throwing at it. you get faster queries and Microsoft gets more life out of older GPUs, Tino Tereshko tells me.

Not only are older GPUs not getting scrapped faster (a suggestion that was doing the rounds last year); so many teams at Microsoft who aren't working on frontier models have ideas to use them that there's internal competition, which may gate availability of database acceleration, according to Conor Cunningham (who covered the research behind this at Fabcon). There's definitely demand!

  22. A major challenge of alternative #search engines seems to be that they have to be *reliable* in the sense that they should work, always.

Web search is an essential tool and if it's not available or quality noticeably degrades (hard to monitor!), that's a major headache for users.

One can argue that you can temporarily go to a different engine, but you have a preferred engine for good reasons (e.g. customizations, UI, etc.). When you have a car you like and used to you probably will struggle even with a very good replacement you got while yours is at the shop.
