😵 🤯 Last year a #Meta Lobbyist became a new head of the #Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC). Today, the former head of the DPC announced that she is now working for MHC - the Irish law firm for Meta that was previously defending Meta before the #DPC in #GPDR cases - basically a 360° seat swap between the Irish regulator and Meta.
This is not just extreme #CorporateCapture of a regulator and makes #Ireland a laughing stock within the EU, but moves like this also undermine any public...

after watching kunal kamra's podcast (https://youtu.be/opbEHULi7JU) and also the @internetfreedom take on the #DPDP act (digital personal data protection), i really would like to bring some attention to the fact that this new act in #india threatens #transparency, #accountability and thereby #democracy.
the new #DPDP act allows the #government to prevent sharing certain information under the guise of protecting personal information. this violates the #RTI Act (right to information) and prevents citizens from holding the government accountable by eliminating any form of transparency in governance.
the act also prevents individuals and journalists to investigate and collect any data that the government might consider to be a violation of the act and issue penalties of up to 250 crores (which can be extended 500).
as someone who is a huge #privacy advocate, it is nice to see initiatives parallel to the #GPDR but it cannot come at the cost of government silencing public scrutiny.

@mfowler I can recommend matomo. We migrated a number of websites from GA to #matomo because of privacy concerns regarding #GPDR non compliance. And we've never regretted it.
It's FOSS, and you can self host or use one of their cloud offerings. Integration is as simple as GA ... means that it will be "some" effort, but it's really doable. IMHO having some information about your visitors is worth the effort 😎

The CNIL, aka the French regulator in charge of personal data and privacy protection topics, released in the end of 2024 a documentation with guidelines and recommendations about the use of personal data for developers.

#strava somehow took profile data from Google and created a Strava account *without my consent*.
I learned that when I got an email from Strava announcing that a certain "Patricia" follows me there. Middle-aged man with an empty account, identifiable through my profile pic and my full name? Yes. Sure.
How is that even possible in the days of #gpdr ... Don't they even bother any more? This is getting interesting.

Fun : a giant data breach from Boulanger, a french dealer (web + physical) exposes personal data (name address birth e-mail phone) on the dark web.
Since yesterday, strange incoming calls and also a person calling me stating that I just called her. Identity theft / impersonation of my phone number in progress by some bots, I guess.
Well. I’m fed up by companies just not knowing how to protect my data.
Will soon remove my data from every website I can find, create account for purchase then instant-drop it upon delivery of goods.
« Don’t store my data if all you have is front-end developers in-house for your shiny store web app. Hire a cybersec guy/gal, do pay for fucking audits! ».
