after watching kunal kamra's podcast (https://youtu.be/opbEHULi7JU) and also the @internetfreedom take on the #DPDP act (digital personal data protection), i really would like to bring some attention to the fact that this new act in #india threatens #transparency, #accountability and thereby #democracy.
the new #DPDP act allows the #government to prevent sharing certain information under the guise of protecting personal information. this violates the #RTI Act (right to information) and prevents citizens from holding the government accountable by eliminating any form of transparency in governance.
the act also prevents individuals and journalists to investigate and collect any data that the government might consider to be a violation of the act and issue penalties of up to 250 crores (which can be extended 500).
as someone who is a huge #privacy advocate, it is nice to see initiatives parallel to the #GPDR but it cannot come at the cost of government silencing public scrutiny.

@mfowler I can recommend matomo. We migrated a number of websites from GA to #matomo because of privacy concerns regarding #GPDR non compliance. And we've never regretted it.
It's FOSS, and you can self host or use one of their cloud offerings. Integration is as simple as GA ... means that it will be "some" effort, but it's really doable. IMHO having some information about your visitors is worth the effort 😎

#strava somehow took profile data from Google and created a Strava account *without my consent*.
I learned that when I got an email from Strava announcing that a certain "Patricia" follows me there. Middle-aged man with an empty account, identifiable through my profile pic and my full name? Yes. Sure.
How is that even possible in the days of #gpdr ... Don't they even bother any more? This is getting interesting.

Fun : a giant data breach from Boulanger, a french dealer (web + physical) exposes personal data (name address birth e-mail phone) on the dark web.
Since yesterday, strange incoming calls and also a person calling me stating that I just called her. Identity theft / impersonation of my phone number in progress by some bots, I guess.
Well. I’m fed up by companies just not knowing how to protect my data.
Will soon remove my data from every website I can find, create account for purchase then instant-drop it upon delivery of goods.
« Don’t store my data if all you have is front-end developers in-house for your shiny store web app. Hire a cybersec guy/gal, do pay for fucking audits! ».

We do not use #Folio as #ILS in @stabi_berlin right now but we're already thinking what to do with #Folio and Identity Management. Reading the latest Blog post by @dltj and his quite progressive ideas makes me feel very positive. If you have an #IdM in your institution, there's no need to double personal information of your patrons in #Folio. Great concerning #GPDR and great idea to let #IdM and #ILS do the jobs they are made for and not mix it.

I had already stopped using #facebook when I had the choice between "waive my privacy rights as an EU citizen" OR "pay up".
Luckily I hadn't deleted my account - or else I couldn't have objected to the abuse of 18 years of pictures, posts, comments and messages for training their "artificial intelligence".
From their point of view: they already "used" person-to-person data for creating first "ads-to-person" and then "person-into-feedback-loops" stochastic models.

In the case of #FaceBook and Instagram, however, their #GPDR policy applied just the tactics you describe here (unless you insist that #META doesn't actually offer "shopping services and goods", which is debatable), or that their "thratening" consists of blocking access to the services they promised would "always be free".

Last year #Facebook began playing games with the #gpdr: users have a choice between waiving their rights, accepting #targetedads, or a subscription (users will still receive ads).
There is a third alternative: remaining locked out (erasing ones profile is still possible).
I can be stubborn, I let my profile rot.Of course there is an algorithm that uses email notifications to make me repent. Half a year later it switched to my secondary email.
