  1. CW: USPol, education

America needs to entirely reshape its education system if we hope to get anywhere, tbh.

People are incapable of thinking of hypotheticals because it's the path of least resistance to not think. We hold utilitarianism on a pedestal, and teachers that want to not conform to this in the slightest face pushback from everyone whose brains are already gone on this rabid trail. We get people who grow up into petty adults, hating the world because they don't let themselves experience it. STEM only helped to fuck everything up about humanities, and this comes from someone who went down the pipeline.

The "average American" cannot think about anything outside of themselves because we have raised them like this, and we need to change what's fundamentally wrong with our system. We need to tear education out by its roots and do something new; the problems are so deep such that we need new curricula.

This is happening to me, but with "tips" about a huge range of crypto-related issues (or perceived issues) people are personally struggling with. The volume is genuinely challenging to deal with.

It takes fairly little effort for a person to tell their AI bot to research and draft an email, but it takes the recipients real time to dig into these tips and separate hallucinations from tips that might actually have some basis. They're basically DDOSing journalists.

I've basically had to start ignoring tips that come in with clearly AI-written emails, even though I know I risk missing stuff. I just don't have the capacity.

  3. Russell Wilson says this is a must win for the Steelers this Weekend if they want to win the AFC North: “This division, to me, has some of the best teams, and it's the toughest division there is. So when I think about this team, who's gonna win this division? It's hard to go against the Steelers 'cause they're finding ways to win. They have Aaron Rodgers. Is this year gonna be the year that it's like that Peyton Manning year? And it's all gonna come down to this weekend. If the Browns win this weekend, I don't know if they come through it because now the Browns have the upside. They got a two-game lead; it's essentially against those guys because they beat them twice. They got the tie break, all that stuff. So this weekend, if I'm the Pittsburgh Steelers, this is your Super Bowl weekend. And guess what? It's the Browns' Super Bowl weekend too.” #Steelers #NFL

  4. > This is where our industry is headed: Owning a software system will depend a lot less on having written it (or similar systems) by hand; instead, what will become most important is knowing just enough to know when something is wrong, and being willing and able to dive as deep as needed, when needed.

I don’t know about you, but the app I’m working on right now has 89,376 lines of code and also includes 18,084,193 lines of dependencies.

So 0.5% of the code in the app came from me.

That’s the state of the industry right now.

But I do know just enough to dig in when something goes wrong.

  5. It reminds me of when the US and its pals in Russia agreed to protect Ukraine if Ukraine gave Russia its nuclear weapons when the right-wing Reagan administration egged on the demise of the communist state, ushering in a right-wing state that is now at war with Ukraine because it has no nuclear weapons and cannot defend itself by itself against a nuclear-armed Russia fueled with petrodollars. Now the US withholds defensive weapons, and cut off intelligence at one point, to ensure Ukraine would suffer an onslaught of Russian drones and missiles. Our two-faced child rapist leaders did it to them. Are we proud?

We need Aladdin's lamp to rid us of the scourge of billionaires. We all see what capitalism has wrought. Some of us don't give a damn and just want in on the action. We call them presidential.

  6. We are tired of this life, of having to ask for help every day just to feed our children. It pains me to see Hamza and Jouri suffering, and I have nothing to offer them. My husband is an amputee and cannot support us. We are not asking for luxury; we are asking for a decent life and enough food to feed our children. Please, don't leave us alone. ❤️🙏

  7. Cam Heyward addresses Jared Verses Comments against the Steelers: “Double teaming, sliding, chipping, are those not allowed in our game? Yeah, I got the bruises to prove it. But we don’t whine about it, baby. It’s part of the game. And so, I’m looking forward to this game. It’s gonna be a fun game. Both teams are in position to do a lot of work in this division, as they say. The AFC North is on fire and I’m glad I’m in the kitchen because I like it that way. But those are words that were said and they will be addressed.” #Steelers #NFL

Odd #dream; Apparently I have a growing crater on the back of my head on the left side, in where you can stick your whole hand, it is not like an open wound, as it has smooth skin all the way around the crater, sometimes bugs climb out of the pocket, but are not living there, rather they seem to exist in my head and are consuming my brain and the internal structure of my head, as the crater seems to grow each day, it is not obvious due to my longer hair, but it's there, it dose not really bother me, expect for the fact I am clueless as to why I have a crater in the back of my head that is growing as bugs eat more and more of the inside, really don't recall the rest or any other parts of this dream, but its been in several the past few nights, and most my dreams run on together like a really bad sitcom, anyways odd right;

  10. Joe Starkey said on 93.7 The Fan he doesn’t think anyone currently on the roster can do what Aaron Rodgers is doing next season in the current QB room: “Could they find something better than this next season that's realistically in-house? Hell no. There's zero chance anyone on this roster is going to approximate what he's doing. And don't confuse that with me saying he's an MVP candidate. He's not. What he is doing is providing a smart, high-level brand of quarterback play. The Saints recognized that, too. You saw linebacker Kaden Ellis say after the game that Aaron Rodgers beat them with his brain. He was diagnosing their pressures, getting the ball out quickly, converting first downs, converting third downs, and basically outsmarting them.” #Steelers #NFL

While I was ogling an unboxing video of the iPhone Duo, I asked my wife when I should get mine. She pointed out I just got a new iPhone last year, which is true… except it’s her iPhone, and it’s a 13 mini, which was new *in box* but 4 generations old then.
Might need a more compelling reason to get a Duo than wanting a backup tablet for when I don’t bring my iPad, which is a real and possibly only use case for me.

  19. Day three of COVID and it looks like I'm finally on the mend. Nose no longer constantly streaming, my constant headache has receded considerably, throat feels more bruised than like a raw wound, I'm less achey all over, and my skin is no longer sore to touch. I still have a "chesty" cough and I'm rather dizzy, but I don't think I'll have to spend another day in bed.

If that is a typical response to the current strain AFTER vaccination (two weeks ago), I dread to think how hard it hits without any priming of the immune system.

    Stay safe out there, folks.

  25. Half an hour of PUBG is enough to turn my Redmi into what feels like a different phone, so I stopped trusting my memory and started writing numbers down instead.

The routine is boring on purpose. The phone sits on a shelf for twenty minutes in a 26°C room. Case comes off, brightness locks at 50%, charging cable stays out, airplane mode goes on. After that I open the game and play the same Erangel route every single time — same landing spot, same rotation, same two firefights. Anything variable ruins the comparison, and a random hot drop will do exactly that.

Every 30 seconds I read three things. Battery temperature and the thermal status come from an adb command I keep in a plain text file, so I don't fumble with flags mid-match. I type it, glance at the output, go back to playing. Frame pacing I pull twice — at the five-minute mark and at the end — from the latency dump of the game's surface layer. I also hit the back panel with a cheap IR thermometer from 2 cm away, right above the camera bump, where the SoC actually sits.

The dump is what changed my mind. My frame counter happily reports 60 while the latency numbers say a fifth of frames missed their deadline. That gap is the whole reason I keep logging.#android #mobile #performance #software #coding #development #engineering #inclusive #community

  28. Fondling Apple’s Folding iPhone Duo

Anticipating Apple’s now released iPhone Duo I spent a morning earlier this past summer checking out Samsung’s latest folding smartphones. I’d never been interested in the folding form factor before and thought it was time to feel them out for myself. I wrote about that here.

Yesterday on a series of errands I convinced my wife to join me in doing some hands-on time with the iPhone Duo in a local Apple Store. Not only did I want to check the device out myself, but my wife is unflinching in her response to all things tech. Her responses are always genuine, occasionally surprising, and often unflinching. With her it’s a quick like/don’t like, and her first impressions rarely change even as she slowly adopts something new.

She was a reluctant iPhone user, only coming on board once manual keyboards disappeared from the scene. And her favorite iPhone was the iPhone mini. Even though she’s using an iPhone 17 now, she still curses Apple for discontinuing that form factor. Daily. Sometimes multiple times a day. I distinctly remember how unhappy she was the day she traded in the second of her iPhone 13 minis.

Back in the day when video reviews of gadgets began to be a thing I’d put her in front of a camera for GottaBeMobile to see how she responded to things. The results were often hilarious as she’d make up her own terms for things, but in the end, always telling.

Before I get to my initial reactions to fondling the device, let me say straight up my wife was not impressed. When she first picked up the device she emphatically said, “This is too heavy. I wouldn’t put that in my purse.”

Almost immediately followed by “What kind of case do you put on this thing?” She drives the tech she uses hard. So hard, I’m glad Apple Care exists.

I encouraged her to fold and unfold the device, check out its different orientations and open a few apps. Her negative impression of the device’s weight paled in comparison to her reaction when she realized she couldn’t fully reach across the screen in the closed position to type on the keyboard with one hand. She could get close, but not close enough to feel comfortable.

She was surprised at how difficult it was to open and close. “You have to use two hands to do anything on this,” she exclaimed. “I feel like I’m going to break it. For something so solid and heavy it feels too fragile.”

First impressions leave a mark. Hers were as indelible as a tattoo.

I have to admit mine were only different by degree.

Even though I’d read about how heavy the iPhone Duo is, I was surprised at the weight in my hand when I picked it up. Opening and closing the device needed more heft than I wanted it to, much like the Samsung devices I checked out this past summer.

While the premium builds of these foldable devices feel solid when you pick them up, the central premise and promise of unfolding the screen feels far too adventurous in my limited hands on time. I’ve noticed that some reviewers are searching for the right place to put your thumb on the larger screen when you close the device after the news of some screens cracking due to a hinge fault. To a degree it smacks of “you’re holding it wrong.” Or is that folding?

I very much like the larger display and can see its attractiveness. So much so that my gut feeling after reading and watching reviews was confirmed once I held the device. I wish Apple had released a folding iPad mini.

Though as someone who uses an iPad as a primary tool in theatre rehearsals, without a good case solution I find it hard to image using what is a very nice thin display in what can be a bit of a hectic and chaotic environment of tech tables filled with other equipment. But a suitable case solution defeats and diminishes the effect of this very nice smaller screen. At least in my mind.

I’m not as enamored of the closed face. Again, in limited hands-on testing I agree with those who say there’s too little screen real estate when a keyboard is on the screen to feel comfortable. Everything feels crowded. Certainly not pleasing to the eye.

All of that said I’ll say what I said about Samsung’s foldables. I can see the attraction for this category of smartphones. But it’s not something I’m interested in. Even ignoring the price points they feel more like luxury devices, than they do everyday practical devices. They require too much hands-on effort for those of us who’ve gotten used to the grab-and-go way we use our smartphones. I’m sure I could get used to quickly taking a photo with practice, but I bet it would still take longer than doing so on my current iPhone. My grandkids move too fast for that kind of action.

I also can’t imagine quickly folding and unfolding an iPhone Duo to take notes or review a script in rehearsals to avoid those chaotic tech tables. Moments move too quickly for an action that feels so painstaking.

These are first impressions. First impressions leave a mark and you don’t often get a chance to change them. Samsung and others have been attempting to reverse that trend for years now, and I imagine they hope Apple’s entry into the foldable market will be a big enough boost to help the entire segment. That may prove to be true down the road, but I think foldable smartphone makers still have some distance to travel before everyday users feel comfortable wrapping their hands around folding phones.

One other quick note. Talking to an Apple store employee I’m familiar with they said interest quickly waned after a small rush on release day last Friday. My wife and I were the only two people anywhere near the two iPhone Duos the store had on display for the hour or so we were in the store, though admittedly it was on a Monday afternoon.
