Key Changes to Superannuation Announced by Jim Chalmers
Treasurer Jim Chalmers has made a surprise announcement revising several major superannuation tax proposals. The six changes are:1. Scrap tax on unrealised gains — only realised earnings (not paper gains) will now face higher tax.
2. New tiered tax rates — earnings above $3 million taxed at 30 %, and a new 40 % rate for balances above $10 million.
3. Indexing of thresholds — both $3 m and $10 m cut-offs will rise with inflation (CPI).
4. Delay to implementation — changes will take effect from July 1, 2026.
5. Boost to low-income offset (LISTO) — the refund cap rises from $500 to $810, and eligibility expands from $37,000 to $45,000 (from July 2027). -
