“Feuerwehr (ohne Opfer)” (Fire department - no casualties)

I hate always feeling like I need to say this, but any images of “patriotic” American iconography are shared here for aesthetic reasons only, and are NOT an endorsement of my government or the myth of American exceptionalism.

Anyway, here’s a New York City Fire Department ship making pretty fountains for the Fourth of July.

  2. I would like to see a one-panel comic with #trans versions (have penis - does not have to be visible, just implied) of Ladies #Liberty and #Justice pissing on a grave with a tombstone that says "47" (Like those peeing Calvin stickers)

I lack the skill to create it. But if the idea tickles enough people, maybe I will get to see some variations.

  3. Entry for the VGen July Challenge! The prompt required a drawing of ice cream; I've first thought of the New York ice cream parlors, and drew the Statue of Liberty holding a cone high! 🍦🗽

  4. If there is one thing that valorises the #Fediverse in a way that is unmatched by any other #SocialMedia platform to date, it is that it’s members are #Informed and therefore enter into discussions from a place that is grounded in facts not fiction.

You may not always agree with their opinions, but those opinions are not formed from #Propaganda (aka #Algorithms), #Hate, #Racism or #Bigotry. In all but a few cases (from my experience) do you find anyone willing to die on the hill of their opinion. Almost all have an open mind and most willing to back up their arguments with reliable sources. It is a diverse and welcoming environment, the safest kid-safe social media platform because it is moderated by its members as well as its instance owners not algorithms.

If there was ever a need to replace (Gods forbid) the cute mascot of #Mastodon with a symbol to stand for what the fediverse was all about, it would be the currently desecrated #StatueOfLiberty: “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore…”

  5. #FotoVorschlag “USA”

My usual caveat: I hate what my country is doing to its own people as well as to people around the world. This should be a day of reflection and resistance, not celebration. That said, I think tall ships and France’s gift statue are very cool, so I went down to Valentino Pier in Brooklyn this morning to capture some shots of both. (More photos in the comments.)

  7. For July 4th: the torch and part of the arm of the Statue of Liberty, on display at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. Information booth at base of arm and two persons seen at railing below flame of torch. The Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division Washington, D.C. #arthistory #july4th #statueofliberty

From the National Park Service: ‘In 1865, a French political intellectual and anti-slavery activist named Edouard de Laboulaye proposed that a statue representing liberty be built for the United States. This monument would honor the United States' centennial of independence and the friendship with France. French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi supported de Laboulaye's idea and in 1870 began designing the statue of "Liberty Enlightening the World."…

The arm holding the torch was completed in 1876 and shown at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The head and shoulders were completed in 1878 and displayed at the Paris Universal Exposition. The entire Statue was completed and assembled in Paris between 1881 and 1884. Also in 1884, construction on the pedestal began in the United States…

On October 28, 1886, the statue of "Liberty Enlightening the World" was officially unveiled. The day's wet and foggy weather did not stop some one million New Yorkers from turning out to cheer for The Statue of Liberty. Parades on land and sea honored the Statue while flags and music filled the air and the official dedication took place beneath the colossus "glistening with rain." When it was time for Bartholdi to release the tricolor French flag that veiled Liberty's face, a roar of guns, whistles, and applause sounded.’

    A closer look.

I took this picture many years ago after climbing the statue’s interior spiral staircase of over 160 narrow steps. I’m not entirely sure I can make the same climb today, so I’m glad I have this photo to remember it by.

“Farbe: Grün (keine Pflanzen)” / Color: Green (no plants)

Oxidation turned the original brown copper color of Bartholdi’s statue fully green by 1920, and she’s been green ever since.
