  1. Nice. The "security" lights in our apartment complex are out. It feels nice & non-stressful to be out on my lanai at night for a change.

  2. Started my end of year digital cleaning/account & key auditing early with a surprisingly concentrated vengeance today:

    Acheived Inbox Zero on all three of my active email accounts:
    - account 1(emails going back to 2014)
    - account 2(emails going back to 2020)
    - account 3(emails going back to beginning of this year).

    Scrubbed, archived, deleted, unsubscribed from dozens of lists. Spotless. A ghost town. Empty.🎉 Feels good.

  3. Had a good day refamiliarizing myself with The Magnetic Fields and catching up on some of their later stuff.

    Merritt was an absolutely wonderful lyrical lunatic. Relentlessly pillaging rhyming dictionaries and elsewhere for his wordsmithing.

    Writing a love song called "The Death of Ferdinand de Saussure" (an early 20th century #semiotics and #linguistics founder) and then guiding the verse back to rhyme with Holland-Dozier...Holland ('60s Motown songwriting Gods) is absotively wonderful.

    I am a sucker for that kind of geeky shit.

    "Flying Nun on Multitrack

    First installment of my blog about these special tapes in the FNR and Chris Knox collections at National Library of NZ. What is a multitrack? What is on these tapes? And how can you listen to and research them?"

  5. An improved method of checking for outdated packages that excludes dev or alpha packages.

    Courtesy of: github.com/pypa/pipx/issues/14

  6. @travisj

    Thanks for this! Great article detailing your image processing workflow.
    Also nice to see some love for Thunar custom actions.

    Q: Is there a reason why you are linking to the 4.12 version of custom actions instead of the current documentation?

  7. @travisj

    Great article! Nice insight into your #design process and engaging with an open source project for the first time as a designer.

    Thanks for the little shout out to #Xfce and the usefulness of #Thunar custom actions.

  8. Currently, I use the pip-check package to check for outdated packages by using `pip-check -H`.

    Is there a better way of checking for outdated #Python packages installed by pip?

    Is there an open issue for adding this functionality to #pip that I might follow? Thanks.

  9. HPE to Acquire Juniper Networks to Accelerate AI-Driven Innovation

    "Highly complementary combination enhances secure, unified, cloud and AI-native networking to drive innovation from edge to cloud to exascale"

    Ooooh, that's a bingo!

  10. Cool. One remaining flatpak application to run after another borked update.

    It's me, not you #flatpak. I swear.

    The only app left standing is #KeyPassXC which has been reliable & stable, for me, for 3+(?) years.

    Aside from keeping my password manager current, I just can't be bothered.
    So it goes.

  11. As much as I like password manager, it's browser extension is kinda frustrating. It's connection to the password database times out at the most inconvenient moments.

    I can't figure out what, if any, settings can be adjusted to prevent a loss of connection to the database.

    (Not just a rant. If someone has an actual fix for this, I'm all ears! Thanks.)

  12. And most everything looks mostly kosher until I want to install my password manager of choice and its fucking grifter central. *sigh*

  13. Really happy that I've been able to move all of my off of Google Authenticator over to

    I've never been comfortable having my TOTP tied to my phone & Google. YMMV

  14. @stevewashington Ah. Well, my phone has been on a death spiral for a bit and I realized that supports . So, that was a no-brainer, for me, as I have local control over the password dB along with the recovery codes & so forth.

    One of the better UX decisions I am seeing being using companies/sites is them immediately offering a set of recovery codes to use when setting up .

  15. Finally got all of my non-google off of Google Authenticator & set up on

    I had been putting it off out of fear that it was going to be painful & cumbersome.

    For the websites/apps that I am using, I was pleasantly surprised that most of them seem to have their shit together (e.g. etc.)

    I can check one thing off of my todo list this week! Thanks for playing nice with your UI/UX

  16. Can #TIOBE die already? There's really no legitimate reason to give the TIOBE Programming Community index any oxygen other than clickbait.

    "Willard: They told me that you had gone totally insane, and that your methods were unsound.
    TIOBE: Are my methods unsound?
    Willard: I don't see any method at all, sir."

  18. After zero-ing out my email inboxes a couple weeks ago, I'm finding it, almost, a bit heartening and nostalgic that I am still getting updates sourceforge.net from software packages that I had subscribed to ages ago.

    I guess they had been lost amidst the noise previously.
    Shoutout to the net-snmp package! Yo!

  19. Nifty.

    7.0 got released today. Just got it up & running on with no issues(so far).

    Not sure how much I'll use it, to be honest. But, I'll poke around to see what's new since I haven't really used it in 5+ years.

  20. Another day, this time with two doctor's appointments. All positive results today.🎉

    Not terribly interesting suburban scenery today; so, I stuck my head into a cherry tree's branches and pretended to be lost in a forest for a moment

    Nice set of pictures today! I can feel The Hum along the lines.

    Are you familiar with ? I'm getting a similar, nicely haunting vibe here.

  22. Reviewing some of the the basics.

    A function, min, for finding the smallest number in a list.
    My first instinct was to look for a built-in `min` function. Failing that, I came across the
    `slices` package(shown below in comments).

  23. "Creating edible chemical accidents in the kitchen" is my modus operandi tonight.

    By dint of ingredients available within arm's reach, it just so happens to bear a resemblance to something...Italian.
    Yes, Italian is on the menu. Indeed.

    May all of your ingredient experiments become happy little accidents!

  24. @qownnotes

    Nice to see some support for #MarkDown LSPs(e.g. rumdl) being built into the app.
    While I still need to drop down to a CLI to perform a line-by-line review of proposed changes, as long as I trust my #rumdl config, I can now easily re-format my .md files within the GUI.

    Thanks for your work! I appreciate it.

  25. Two line config to add the #rumdl markdown linter to #Vim:
    ```
    let g:ale_linters = { 'markdown': ['rumdl'] }
    let g:ale_fixers = { 'markdown': ['rumdl'] }
    ```

    Then use ALEFix to clean up the file. I've got that remapped to '<leader>af'.

  26. There we go! A little constructive ranting/shouting into the void helped to break my logjam.

    I do kind of like the vim-markdown Table of Contents auto-generation & header manipulation. Still, once a doc gets to a certain, ineffable size is still pretty cheesy. for the win
