    "Flying Nun on Multitrack

First installment of my blog about these special tapes in the FNR and Chris Knox collections at National Library of NZ. What is a multitrack? What is on these tapes? And how can you listen to and research them?"

  6. Stream 385,000 Vintage 78 RPM Records at the Internet Archive: Louis Armstrong, Glenn Miller, Billie Holiday & More via Open Culture[Shared]

We may have yet to develop the technology of time travel, but recorded music comes pretty close. Those who listen to it have experienced how a song or an album can, in some sense, transport them right back to the time they first heard it. But older records also have the much stranger power to conjure up eras we never experienced. You can musically send yourself as far back as the nineteen-twenties with the above Youtube playlist of digitized 78 RPM records from the George Blood collection.

  7. EM258 being one of the cheap capsules sold by micbooster dot com. Capsule is good to record roughly up to 50kHz and the prototype mic I have cost like 10 euros to build. Cost-effective as it gets, not a big loss if you accidentally trash one.

  8. Prep & rigging time, about to head outdoors for some recordings!

Whenever I need to have the EM258 capsule inside shotgun windshield (besides the shotty mic), the quick lock lever of the pistol grip makes for one quick & neat cable management setup. Mic cable connection to VXLR+ preamp is a bit flaky so it always pays off to secure the two down real good.

  9. Ever wondered what the Baltic Sea or the southern Indian coast sounds like? Or how a stroll through Brescia’s old town feels acoustically? In my latest blog post, I invite you to explore these and other places visually and through sound. I compare photos and recordings of the same location to show how time and space are experienced differently through sight and hearing.

  11. I’m irrationally annoyed by people who hold hand-held microphones at their waist or chest level…just holding it there, pointing it approximately at the sky…instead of pointing it at their mouths and maintaining a constant distance. I’m so annoyed by this that I sometimes close videos just because the speaker does this.

I understand that some modern mics (especially those lapel-style box microphones that influencers inexplicably prefer to hold in their hands) have an array of directional mics and they do noise cancellation and beam steering and blah blah so the audio is just as good or whatever, but I just can’t stand it.

The only thing that annoys me more is when people _gesture_ with their mics. Tell me you have no idea how sound recording works, why don’t you. Where’s that Close button?

  12. Also it was not a first time I thought of recording the sounds of nature. Is anyone here experienced in this matter and would tell me how much one needs to invest so the gear is good enough?

  14. @trevorflowers their most fresh news are posted on their mastodon account, including the arrival of their PnP machine :blobaww: . By the way, if you're into #soundrecording too, there's a nice opportunity window for building a modular open source high quality audio recorder (it's in my head since eons...) I'm not alone eyeing the BeagleBone for this: diyaudio.com/community/threads There is the Bela team who has built a great learning hub around their BB cape: bela.io

  15. Has anyone ever - ouch - tried putting a tiny microphone in their - ouch! - beard? 🧔
    The ultimate windscreen.
    Well, feedback:
    - the sound is much better than when pinned to the sweater.
    - the DPA - that's my old companion DPA I usually use for the violin 😬 - fell into the water for a moment 😱 but the next day it's still alive. Pfiuuu.

  19. Another essential equipment post: the Edirol R-09HR (with windscreen)

Great for recording interesting sounds in the world most of which end up in my tracks. And I also have lots of recordings of me saying "Fuck sake!" when I get my recorder going and the interesting sound I'm trying to record suddenly stops. Also good for capturing live performances/jams/malfunctions.

  22. Quick sound effect recording setup of the day, looking for some ”plastic barrel-ish” things with this. Happy I didn’t yet toss that sheet of thin acrylic (reno leftover) previously 😄 #GameAudio #SoundRecording

  24. Spending all evening trying to record something with my H1 and Audacity but when I play it back it sounds as if I had my nose pinched and my voice raised one octave...
WHAT THE FxCK IS GOING ON?!

This is my fault for studying movie making instead of sound recording...
