Anis al-Doleh, cuyo nombre real era Zahra Khanom Tadj es-Saltaneh, nació en 1883, hija del Shah Nasser al-Din Shah Qajar, que gobernó Persia desde 1848 hasta 1896.
Fue una mujer revolucionaria, conocida tanto por su belleza como por su inteligencia y determinación en la lucha por los derechos de las mujeres.Desde joven, Zahra se destacó por su carácter fuerte y su belleza singular.
Era la favorita del Shah, y la historia cuenta que hasta 145 hombres de la nobleza intentaron cortejarla, de los cuales, según la leyenda, 13 se suicidaron tras ser rechazados.
Su belleza no se ajustaba a los cánones occidentales modernos: tenía cejas gruesas y unidas, un bigote fino y una figura robusta, rasgos que hoy nos sorprenden y que llevaron a muchos a afirmar que parecía “un hombre disfrazado” en las fotos oficiales.
Sin embargo, en la Persia del siglo XIX, estos rasgos eran símbolos de nobleza, pureza y estatus social, y la robustez corporal indicaba que pertenecía a una clase privilegiada que no necesitaba trabajar.Se casó con Amir Hussein Khan Shoja'-al Saltaneh, con quien tuvo cuatro hijos, pero el matrimonio terminó en divorcio.
Tras ello, se convirtió en musa del poeta persa Aref Qazvini, quien escribió el poema "Ey Ta" inspirándose en ella.Anis al-Doleh no solo fue un icono de belleza, sino también de poder y activismo político.
Lideró protestas dentro del harén y tuvo influencia sobre decisiones del Shah.
Fue protagonista en la Protesta del Tabaco de 1891, donde obligó a prohibir fumar incluso al propio Shah, logrando que se cancelara un contrato con los británicos que otorgaba el monopolio del tabaco.
En 1910, fue cofundadora de Anjoman Horriyyat Nsevan, una sociedad por la libertad de las mujeres, y promovió la educación femenina y la adopción de ropa occidental, abandonando el hiyab.
Además, organizaba salones literarios semanales, dedicándose al arte, la pintura y la escritura.El Shah era un gran aficionado a la fotografía y estableció un estudio en el Palacio de Golestán, donde él mismo fotografiaba y revelaba las imágenes del harén, asegurando que solo él pudiera acceder a sus esposas.
Muchas de las fotos que hoy nos parecen impactantes se deben al maquillaje intenso, la iluminación y los procesos de revelado de la época, que acentuaban rasgos como cejas y bigote, creando un efecto sorprendente para los ojos modernos.
Fotógrafos como Antoin Sevruguin y Francis Carlhian colaboraron más tarde, documentando escenas de la corte bajo estricta supervisión.Anis al-Doleh ejerció un poder real dentro del harén y en la corte: criticaba al Shah en público, influía en nombramientos oficiales y era escuchada por nobles y diplomáticos, lo que la convirtió en una figura central en la política persa de su tiempo.
Las imágenes conservadas hoy muestran momentos cotidianos de la vida del harén: comiendo, relajadas, con sus gatos, ofreciendo una mirada inédita a un mundo cerrado y exclusivo hasta entonces.Más que un símbolo de belleza exótica, Anis al-Doleh fue una mujer de inteligencia, influencia política y activismo social, que desafió los estándares de su época y dejó una huella imborrable en la historia de Persia.
