Vivir rodeadas por el mar y no poder entrar en él.
Esa es la contradicción que durante años marcó la vida de muchas niñas y mujeres en Zanzíbar.No porque el mar estuviera prohibido como tal, sino por una mezcla de normas sociales, pudor y la falta de ropa de baño adecuada que encajara con su entorno cultural.
El resultado era extraño: crecer viendo el agua cada día, pero sin que aprender a nadar fuera algo habitual para ellas.Durante mucho tiempo, el mar estuvo ahí… pero no del todo disponible.
En ese contexto nace una serie de imágenes documentadas por la fotógrafa Anna Boyiazis, donde se ve a mujeres aprendiendo a flotar, perder el miedo y moverse en el agua por primera vez.
No hay puesta en escena dramática.
Solo cuerpos en el mar, apoyándose en bidones vacíos para mantenerse a flote mientras aprenden lo básico: sobrevivir, respirar, confiar.Detrás de esas clases estaba el Proyecto Panje, una iniciativa local en Zanzíbar centrada en la seguridad acuática y la prevención de ahogamientos.
El programa también introdujo trajes de baño de cuerpo completo, pensados para respetar las normas culturales y permitir que las mujeres pudieran entrar al agua sin conflicto con su entorno.Con el tiempo, algunas de las alumnas pasaron a convertirse en instructoras, enseñando a otras mujeres de su propia comunidad.
Y ahí es donde la historia cambia de escala, sin hacer ruido.Porque no se trata solo de aprender a nadar.
Se trata de algo más básico: poder acceder a un espacio que siempre estuvo ahí, pero que no era realmente accesible para todos.
Lo interesante de estas imágenes no es lo que muestran en superficie, sino lo que cuentan sin decirlo: cómo una habilidad tan simple puede convertirse en una forma de autonomía, y cómo el cambio real a veces no llega como ruptura, sino como algo más lento, más cotidiano… casi silencioso.
Y aun así, lo transforma todo.

MALINDI, #Kenya (AP) — "The unfinished restaurant is still little more than concrete walls and wooden beams. As her daughter sweeps away the last piles of sand, 54-year-old Nuru Mohammed directs women hanging fishing nets to serve as decor. In a few days, the beachside restaurant on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast will open, offering another way to earn a living.
" 'For us women, this is hope,' says Mohammed, who, for most of her life, was one of the few fisherwomen in Malindi, a town northeast of the port city of #Mombasa. 'It will help support many families that have depended on the ocean for decades.'
"Across East Africa’s coast, fisherfolk are increasingly turning to tourism, #EcosystemRestoration and other conservation-based businesses, reinventing their relationship with the sea as #ClimateChange, #overfishing and declining ocean health threaten their livelihoods.
"In Kenya, women are turning restored #MangroveForests into sources of income through #beekeeping and #ecotourism. In #Tanzania’s #Zanzibar archipelago, fishing communities are protecting #CoralReefs through locally managed closures. In #Mozambique, #SeaGrassRestoration is creating jobs while reviving marine habitats. Together, these efforts are redefining resilience, not as leaving the ocean behind, but as restoring it while building enduring livelihoods.
" 'Communities that depend on the ocean are also its best stewards,' said Andreane Martel, project director for a conservation program dubbed #ReSea. 'When local people, especially women, lead conservation, they protect #biodiversity while creating more resilient and inclusive livelihoods.' "
