“Haha” ... (I would have laughed back then).

But honestly, I wouldn't be surprised today if Ratcliffe's visit had been about reviving the #Hitler - #Stalin Pact.

I think Ukraine is on its last legs. It’s clear that a solution must be found without nukes.

A #Trump - #Putin Pact: What was Poland back then would be all of #Europe today.

We all know how that turned out - including Putin.

As a former KGB agent, he’s surely aware of the trustwortyness of psychos like Hitler or Trump ..

  2. "Iconic" painting depicting a fictional #Stalin on a white horse, thrusting a spear at a dragon that has a #Nazi flag on its body.

  5. @emilyenco people who believe in a 'vanguard party' believe in an elite; and in every #MarxistLeninist state that has ever existed, that elite has arrogated to itself huge privilege. This isn't to say that #MarxismLeninism is 'the same as' or 'just as bad as' #Fascism, it clearly isn't. But the reason that #Stalin felt it more important to crush the #AnarchoSyndicalists in the #SpanishCivilWar than to defeat the #Fascists is that they were more of a threat to his so-called #Communism.

  6. @vicfroh
    I'm not defending #Thompson or any healthcare CEO, but #BrianThompson wasn't #Hitler or #Stalin.

As #Plato illustrated in his book "Republic", the easiest way to tell if an action is right or wrong is "if everyone did it."

    ## Description:
In **Hitler and Stalin Today (MUN180H1-S)**, Timothy Snyder examines the Nazi and Soviet responses to the new globalized world they shared. The course begins with the colonial background that made totalitarianism possible, and which remains an essential element of our politics now. Their ideologies are described as worldviews and as practical politics, with an emphasis on the reasons for their appeal. Attention to their policies of mass killing, essential events of twentieth-century history, instructs us about how "it" can happen here. The study of dissident thought helps us to see connections between historical predicaments and our own, and instructs us about possible reactions as individuals and as citizens. The course asks what we have learned from the twentieth century and what lessons we should carry forward.

    > The first lecture in a ten-lecture series on Hitler and Stalin today.
    >
    > The first lecture (video above) is titled “What is history?” We speak often about history, but we are careless with the past. When we choose not to know what has happened before, we are also choosing not to influence what will happen after. If we don’t care about history, we find ourselves in an eternal present, denied any sort of imagination about the future, and nurtured on lies about a past in which we were innocent. History does not mean these misleading tales; it means a search for knowledge, using a certain set of tools; it means a process that enriches and humanizes, one that allows us to name things by their proper names.

Compared to the #Czars #Lenin was a competent and a nice guy, sadly for all Russians, he was an arrogant bastard, and #Trotsky even more so. Lenin looked down on the peasants, Trotsky looked down on the peasants AND the #proletariat . #Lenin gave all party members perks that began to corrupt the ideology, and #Stalin used those perks to gain loyalty from people with loose belief in #communism . Trotsky would have been the right man for the job, but wasn't the best at gaining and holding power. Communism would have been somewhat repressive but no where near the terror and brutality and death that it was under Stalin, with deaths that dwarfed most czars, and 3% of the population was incarcerated.. After that all new socialist nations were forced due to trade embargoes by the west to become Stalinist instead of a more democratic system. This only ended once Stalin Died and places like Chile, Vietnam, Cuba and Laos aimed to be democratic, but with all the American backed coups and embargoes, this was not to be sadly.

  21. I am driven by my emotions.

"Our opinions generally have emotional rather than intellectual roots, and indeed rationality largely functions as a post hoc justification. Our political opinions, ultimately, are what we feel about the world, not what we think about it. And in turn, our opinions about particular events have a lot to do with how we feel about the world in general. It’s not an exaggeration to say that most people’s views about the kind of things that happen today are extensions of concerns of their own ego. And consequently, invitations to change their minds because new facts emerge, or because old ideas are discredited by new evidence, are in fact a threat to the strength and even survival of that ego."

"But few people, especially those who have received a decent education, want to acknowledge that their views are based on emotion and not reason. They therefore try to argue".

  22. 20 Lessons from the 20th Century About How to Defend #Democracy from #Authoritarianism, According to Yale #Historian #TimothySnyder

    in History | January 20th, 2017

"Timothy Snyder, Housum Professor of History at Yale University, is one of the foremost scholars in the U.S. and Europe on the rise and fall of #totalitarianism during the 1930s and 40s. Among his long list of appointments and publications, he has won multiple awards for his recent international bestsellers '#Bloodlands: Europe between #Hitler and #Stalin' and last year’s 'Black Earth: The #Holocaust as History and Warning.' That book in part makes the argument that #Nazism wasn’t only a #German #nationalist movement but had global #colonialist origins—in #Russia, #Africa, and in the #UnitedStates, the nation that pioneered so many methods of human extermination, #racist #dehumanization, and ideologically-justified #LandGrabs.

"The hyper-#capitalism portrayed in the U.S.—even during the Depression—Snyder writes, fueled Hitler’s imagination, such that he promised Germans 'a life comparable to that of the American people,' whose 'racially pure and uncorrupted' German population he described as 'world class.' Snyder describes Hitler’s ideology as a myth of racialist struggle in which 'there are really no values in the world except for the stark reality that we are born in order to take things from other people.' Or as we often hear these days, that acting in accordance with this principle is the 'smart' thing to do. Like many far right figures before and after, Hitler aimed to restore a state of nature that for him was a perpetual state of race war for imperial dominance."
