    ## Description:
In **Hitler and Stalin Today (MUN180H1-S)**, Timothy Snyder examines the Nazi and Soviet responses to the new globalized world they shared. The course begins with the colonial background that made totalitarianism possible, and which remains an essential element of our politics now. Their ideologies are described as worldviews and as practical politics, with an emphasis on the reasons for their appeal. Attention to their policies of mass killing, essential events of twentieth-century history, instructs us about how "it" can happen here. The study of dissident thought helps us to see connections between historical predicaments and our own, and instructs us about possible reactions as individuals and as citizens. The course asks what we have learned from the twentieth century and what lessons we should carry forward.

  3. theconversation.com/updating-d. As I recall, there was a chap called Trofim Lysenko (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trofim_L) who was both anti-Mendelian & pro-Lamarckist. His #influence on #Soviet #biology was absolutely disastrous, & he was single-handedly the cause of much of the #crop #failure, & ensuing #malnutrition, that happened in the #SovietUnion under #Stalin.

    > The first lecture in a ten-lecture series on Hitler and Stalin today.
    >
    > The first lecture (video above) is titled “What is history?” We speak often about history, but we are careless with the past. When we choose not to know what has happened before, we are also choosing not to influence what will happen after. If we don’t care about history, we find ourselves in an eternal present, denied any sort of imagination about the future, and nurtured on lies about a past in which we were innocent. History does not mean these misleading tales; it means a search for knowledge, using a certain set of tools; it means a process that enriches and humanizes, one that allows us to name things by their proper names.

  5. "[S]ix million people were sent to the #Soviet #Gulag. A quarter did not survive. Another 16-17 million were transported to strict regime #laborcamps, where the death rate was around 10%.

Within these numbers are the names of tens of thousands of #Jews of every kind, from the devout #hassid to the #assimilated #Communist.

#Stalin’s rule was fortified by spies who believed that they were repairing the world and saving it from the ravages of #fascism. The most effective of these were five young idealists who were at #CambridgeUniversity in the 1930s and who bore witness to the rise of #Hitler and the march of #Nazism across Europe.

#TheCambridgeFive: #GuyBurgess, #DonaldMcLean, #KimPhilby, #AnthonyBlunt, and #JohnCairncross sold their collective soul to Stalin. Compared to the #Czars #Lenin was a competent and a nice guy, sadly for all Russians, he was an arrogant bastard, and #Trotsky even more so. Lenin looked down on the peasants, Trotsky looked down on the peasants AND the #proletariat . #Lenin gave all party members perks that began to corrupt the ideology, and #Stalin used those perks to gain loyalty from people with loose belief in #communism . Trotsky would have been the right man for the job, but wasn't the best at gaining and holding power. Communism would have been somewhat repressive but no where near the terror and brutality and death that it was under Stalin, with deaths that dwarfed most czars, and 3% of the population was incarcerated.. After that all new socialist nations were forced due to trade embargoes by the west to become Stalinist instead of a more democratic system. This only ended once Stalin Died and places like Chile, Vietnam, Cuba and Laos aimed to be democratic, but with all the American backed coups and embargoes, this was not to be sadly.

  9. "Of course Stalin didn't perform genocide! But also, the Poles, Finns, Koreans, Crimean Tatars, Ukrainians, Baltic nations, and Central Asian peoples had it coming!"

  12. “What matters more, he realizes that the Russians see this too. It would be useless to try to take a firm line with Stalin. He will be able to do as he pleases. Will he become a menace to the free world, another Hitler? The P.M. is appalled by his own impotence.”

  13. “Moran believed he knew why Churchill felt this way. ‘Until he came here, the P.M. could not bring himself to believe that, face to face with Stalin, the democracies would take different courses. Now he sees he cannot rely on the President’s [Roosevelt] support.

  14. Different take on the chummy relationship between Churchill & Roosevelt..
“[..], Churchill was sufficiently depressed during the [Tehran November 1943] conference to have a late-night vision of devastation. ‘I believe man might destroy man and wipe out civilization,’ he told Lord Moran, his doctor. ‘Europe would be desolate and I may be held responsible.’
