  8. A quotation from Hannah Arendt

Moreover, if we look at the techniques of totalitarian government, it is obvious that the argument of “the lesser evil” — far from being raised only from the outside by those who do not belong to the ruling elite — is one of the mechanisms built into the machinery of terror and criminality. Acceptance of lesser evils is consciously used in conditioning the government officials as well

  15. The new political climate

US journalist and professor Jeff Jarvis "describes a dangerous authoritarian shift: freedom of the press, education, and the courts are under attack, critical voices like Jimmy Kimmel are being silenced, and many media outlets are adapting out of fear—or are being taken over outright." 17. A quotation from Hannah Arendt

Caution in handling generally accepted opinions that claim to explain whole trends of history is especially important for the historian of modern times, because the last century has produced an abundance of ideologies that pretend to be keys to history but are actually nothing but desperate efforts to escape responsibility.

    https://www.derstandard.at/story/3000000305983/was-science-fiction-ueber-aengste-und-sehnsuechte-der-menschen-verraet

  20. A quotation from Hannah Arendt

Without being bound to the fulfillment of promises, we would never be able to keep our identities; we would be condemned to wander helplessly and without direction in the darkness of each man’s lonely heart, caught in its contradictions and equivocalities — a darkness which only the light shed over the public realm through the presence of others, who confirm the identity between the one who promises and the one who fulfills, can dispel.

Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) German-American philosopher, political theorist
The Human Condition, Part 5, ch. 33 “Irreversibility and the Power to Forgive” (1958)

  21. "Stupidity on a social scale had to be remediable, if only because it was no longer explicable as a mere cognitive deficiency among individuals. She (Hannah Arendt) believed that people – intellectuals as much as “the masses” – had stopped exercising their powers of judgment, preferring to mouth platitudes or simply obey orders, rather than think for themselves." 22. Deception, Obfuscation & Misdirection

This is a concatenation of posts I originally made in 2016-2017--even more relevant today...

Most are familiar with the concept of #FUD—short for #Fear, #Uncertainty & #Doubt. It summarizes a strategy often used in marketing and political propaganda. Its effects are pernicious, divisive and lead to exploitation. Examples abound. Fear is a strong motivator! To resist FUD one must understand how it is practiced using the principles of #Deception, #Obfuscation and #Misdirection.

I basically agree... but like many bad things, I suspect it will be more banal (using the word as Hannah Arendt did)...

Take the simple case of a six week power grid failure in the state of #Texas. This has already happened to a lesser degree. For this thought experiment... let's assume there won't be much Federal relief (as the Texas GOP would like it!).

The first two weeks people would mostly do okay, surviving on stored food and charity.

The next two weeks a portion of the population would become increasingly desperate. Major clashes over resources would occur. If there was someplace to go (surrounding states or Mexico) mass migration would begin.

By the fifth week desperation would dominate. Those that remained would turn on each other and begin assaulting the remaining enclaves where either wealth or forethought created safe zones.

Things might progress faster or slower, but IMO this is the most likely scenario.

Note that for the above to happen only ONE element of modern society (cheap, available electricity) would have to break down.
