A quotation from Hannah Arendt
The disturbing factor in the success of totalitarianism is rather the true selflessness of its adherents: it may be understandable that a Nazi or Bolshevik will not be shaken in his conviction by crimes against people who do not belong to the movement or are even hostile to it; but the amazing fact is that neither is he likely to waver when the monster begins to devour its own children, and not even if he becomes a victim of persecution himself, if he is framed and condemned, if he is purged from the party and sent to a forced-labor or concentration camp. On the contrary, to the wonder of the whole civilized world, he may even be willing to help in his own prosecution and frame his own death sentence if only his status as a member of the movement is not touched.

A quotation from Hannah Arendt
The trouble with Eichmann was precisely that so many were like him, and that the many were neither perverted nor sadistic, that they were, and still are, terribly and terrifyingly normal. From the viewpoint of our legal institutions and of our moral standards of judgment, this normality was much more terrifying than all the atrocities put together, for it implied — as had been said at Nuremberg over and over again by the defendants and their counsels — that this new type of criminal, who is in actual fact hostis generis humani [enemy of humanity], commits his crimes under circumstances that make it well-nigh impossible for him to know or to feel that he is doing wrong.

New essay: The Will to Be Ruled — Totalitarianism and the Fantasy of Freedom
Modern autonomy collapses under its own weight.
When the “self-governed subject” falters, obedience rushes in as comfort.
The essay follows the gradient from freedom to devotion—where submission feels virtuous, even ecstatic.#Philosophy #AntiEnlightenment #CriticalTheory #Arendt #Totalitarianism #Ethics #Psychology #Power #DisIntegrationism #PhilosophicsBlog #Politics #Enlightenment #Agency

A quotation from Hannah Arendt
The total moral collapse of respectable society during the Hitler regime may teach us that under such circumstances those who cherish values and hold fast to moral norms and standards are not reliable: we now know that moral norms and standards can be changed overnight, and that all that then will be left is the mere habit of holding fast to something.
Much more reliable will be the doubters and skeptics, not because skepticism is good or doubting wholesome, but because they are used to examine things and to make up their own minds.
Best of all will be those who know only one thing for certain: that whatever else happens, as long as we live we shall have to live together with ourselves.Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) German-American philosopher, political theorist

>>... the most typical character of the age is “the non-conformist conformist:” someone who says what everyone else says while flattering themselves that they are telling a bold truth that no else one has the courage to say. Well, it’s easy to be courageous in a crowd.<<

"In the 2nd half of the 20th century, there was a short time when Western governments and cultures pretended they were against genocide: one in particular, the Holocaust. But before that, they had been for it."
Thank you for the link @RFancio
I even understand that prof. Julia Steinberger asks us to consider perpetrators as normal.
It reminds me of "the banality of evil" from Hannah #Arendt:Adolf Eichmann ‘never realised what he was doing’ due to an ‘inability… to think from the standpoint of somebody else’. (From her 1963 book.)
Arendt found Eichmann an ordinary, rather bland, bureaucrat, who in her words, was ‘neither perverted nor sadistic’, but ‘terrifyingly normal’.
