Ofri Ilani in #Haaretz uses a Stanisław Lem story to explain something analysts keep refusing to say plainly: the world is run by an idiot.
In Lem’s “Idiota” (in “A Perfect Vacuum”; OM), parents of a severely disabled infant convince themselves he is a superior being, freed from language, morality, and limits. They build a cult around interpreting his drool as metaphysical insight. Eventually they abandon reason entirely to imitate him.
Ilani observes correctly that this is exactly what Israeli public opinion does with #Trump. And not only Israel. The “best analysts” at Foreign Policy and Foreign Affairs do it too. They can’t admit the conclusion because it means accepting an arbitrary, absurd world. So they manufacture strategy where there is none.
[…] But at a certain point the stupidity just screams to the heavens. You have no choice but to acknowledge it – unless you belong to a particularly fanatical cult of believers. And the war against #Iran is one of those moments. This is simply a stupid, absurd, and destructive war. There is no point looking for any hidden logic in it.
He concluded: Napoleon also smashed the old order violently, but claimed to replace it with Reason. Trump replaces it with stupidity and ignorance. Supporting Trump is therefore explicitly nihilistic – not a political position, simply the desire to watch the world burn.

Un video che abbiamo pubblicato su #Haaretz mostrava come, per circa 45 minuti, i soldati siano rimasti indifferenti accanto al bambino ferito ma ancora vivo, senza prestargli alcun soccorso.
Da quando ci siamo incontrate alla fine di gennaio, Safaa Jadallah mi ha chiamato o scritto ogni pochi giorni, esprimendo la sua sorpresa per il fatto che, nonostante l’attenzione dei media, #Israele non abbia restituito il corpo di suo figlio alla famiglia.
Su sua richiesta, ho contattato diverse persone in Cisgiordania e in Israele per verificare se fossero disposte a parlare con lei riguardo alla restituzione della salma di suo figlio.
È rimasta delusa dal fatto che coloro che avevano promesso di chiamarla non l’abbiano fatto. ⬇️3 -

Noa Limona details in #Haaretz how the Shin Bet intelligence service summoned a Palestinian student from Haifa University for interrogation regarding his activities with the #Hadash (left) party’s university branch.
The student underwent body searches twice - upon arrival and before entering the interrogation room. When he asked if this was a formal investigation, the Shin Bet operative said no, adding cryptically that “the investigation will be underground, without light.”
The operatives explicitly warned the student not to “cross red lines” or “even come close to them.” They allegedly threatened that if he did, they would raid his parents’ house at 4 AM and destroy it.
[…] Haaretz has learned that another Arab student who belongs to the Haifa University Hadash branch was summoned for a similar warning talk. The second student said he preferred not to talk to Haaretz for fear of the consequences.
