Noa Limona details in #Haaretz how the Shin Bet intelligence service summoned a Palestinian student from Haifa University for interrogation regarding his activities with the #Hadash (left) party’s university branch.

The student underwent body searches twice - upon arrival and before entering the interrogation room. When he asked if this was a formal investigation, the Shin Bet operative said no, adding cryptically that “the investigation will be underground, without light.”

The operatives explicitly warned the student not to “cross red lines” or “even come close to them.” They allegedly threatened that if he did, they would raid his parents’ house at 4 AM and destroy it.

[…] Haaretz has learned that another Arab student who belongs to the Haifa University Hadash branch was summoned for a similar warning talk. The second student said he preferred not to talk to Haaretz for fear of the consequences.

#Israel-#Palestine / Legal Scholars Denounce 'Unprecedented' Suspension of MK Cassif as Threat to Democratic Expression

The Forum of Law Professors for Democracy has issued a statement condemning the Knesset Ethics Committee's unprecedented six-month suspension of MK Ofer Cassif, which was imposed alongside a two-week salary suspension for his accusations against Israel and the IDF regarding alleged war crimes.

The Forum members argue that the decision is legally problematic on two grounds:

first, it violates the fundamental right to freedom of expression, particularly for elected officials, suggesting that substantive debate rather than punishment should address such claims;

… and second, it represents selective enforcement, as the Committee has not taken similar action against other MKs who have called for indiscriminate harm to Palestinian civilians in Gaza, despite both types of statements potentially conflicting with Israel's foundational values.

The Forum is calling for the decision's reversal to protect MKs' rights to criticize government policies, regardless of whether such criticism is justified.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Israeli political parties #Hadash (Democratic Front for Peace and Equality) and #Maki (Israeli Communist Party) warn against the implications of including unconvicted civilians in the prisoner exchange deal.

In response to the Israeli government's publication of the list of prisoners #Israel will release in exchange for the release of captives held by #Hamas they say:

"The Israeli government published the names of prisoners it will release as part of the deal to exchange captives, which included the names of Arab civilian women arrested after October 7, during a turbulent wave of political persecution, without any conviction in Israeli courts. "

"What is now required is the immediate cessation of false arrests against Arab citizens as part of the "witch hunt," and the release of the young women to their homes irrespective of any deal."

The Knesset Ethics Committee decided this morning (Wednesday) to impose sanctions on MK Aida Touma-Sliman (#Hadash) and MK Iman Khatib-Yasin (#Raam), following their remarks regarding the war in #Gaza.

[…] The committee decided to suspend Touma-Sliman from the Knesset for two months following a tweet in which she claimed the #IDF was attacking #Shifa Hospital in Gaza.

[…] It should be noted that IDF forces have been operating since this morning in one of the compounds of Shifa Hospital in Gaza, with the IDF stating that "the operation is based on intelligence information and operational necessity."

[…] MK Touma-Sliman responded: "The Ethics Committee's decision is not just my personal silencing. It is the silencing of an entire public I represent and the silencing of anyone who dares to voice an opinion that is not a consensus. I see the committee's decision, which gives a hand to crushing freedom of expression inside and outside the Knesset, in utmost severity," she added, "and I see fit to warn of the fateful implications this will also have on representatives in parliament and the general public, including the Arab minority.”

[…] "It is no coincidence that the sanctions imposed on me are in the form of suspension, silencing and denial of my right and duty to participate in Knesset committees and plenum and to actually oversee government decisions, because it is clear to me that the goal is not to maintain the Knesset's dignity and status but to silence any criticism that is inconsistent with the majority opinion.
