Outschool also reported that #Florida has 338,000 #homeschoolers. Not sure where they got that number, but FL's DoE reports just over 152,000 kids educated at home by their parents during the 2021-22 school year. /4

"Upside Foods, which was formerly known as Memphis Meats, harvests cells from animal tissues and then grows edible flesh in bioreactors. The company said the flesh grown is identical to conventionally-raised meat.
It will still take some months before #LabGrownMeat floods #American #supermarkets – each product will have to be approved by regulators and #UpsideFoods still has to get the acquiescence of the #USDA for its venture." 1/2

"1 in 3 #Maryland #foster #children are being given psychotropic #medications, often without a documented #psychiatric #diagnosis, according to the #ACLU lawsuit filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for Maryland. This is compared to about 8% of Medicaid-eligible children nationwide who are not in foster care."
Aside from health risks of docs prescribing meds off-label to kids, let's talk about the #education and #PrisonPipeline implications of this atrocity. 1/2

@meoutloud I hear your concerns about not wanting to promote -isms within education. For the better part of the last decade (pre-covid) my work focus was split between the needs of profoundly gifted kids (think kids who start college as early as 10) and kids/teens caught up in the juvenile justice system (often mis-served by public school #SpEd). I am extremely sensitive to dismantling the #PrisonPipeline system as well as ensuring ALL #students have the opp to learn. When you think about ... /1

In Sept 2022, #Outschool announced findings from a small scale survey they conducted about #homeschooling. This is a🧵about a company valued at $3 billion reporting bad research.
Outschool’s survey “interviewed” 662 families using SurveyMonkey. The press release offers nothing terribly groundshaking, though the header “New reasons families are choosing to #homeschool is a bit misleading. /1 #Education #SchoolChoice #EdPolicy #Edutooter

@watzon I've consulted with 3 startups who've wanted to market educational technology to #homeschool families. From what you've described, it sounds like you're looking to create something that blends #OutSchool with what #TeachersPayTeachers already offer. I think the "credentialing" part will be critical to your plan. Just because a parent has successfully homeschooled their own kids doesn't mean they know how to write curriculum or teach an online class.

#Bartering for the win! I'll be doing some education work and in exchange I'll be getting #watercolor lessons from a professional #artist who also teaches at the college level.
I am so excited. -
What's your favorite digital tool that showcases interconnected biographies? I'm working on a #history project for my #Quaker Meeting and am using Google Earth to take a tour of historic Meetinghouses. I want to add hyperlinks to the descriptions that take you to a separate project that indexes short bios of prominent historical Quakers from the area. Neither #Prezi nor #Wakelet feel right. Am grateful for any suggestions you may have. Thx

@Liveotherwise That's great that you've gotten personalized feedback, but yeah, editors and agents can be a fickle bunch. Yesterday, I shared a kill letter post I received once for an anthology submission that had already been accepted. If you believe in your work, keep submitting. Also, keep a look out for the #pitmad and related hashtag posts. It was a great way to direct market your work on the bird site. I'm curious to see if it migrates here. #AmQuerying

@cvalvarez The #VCI subtest on the #WISC requires the tester to score 0, 1, or 2 points for each answer given. For example, the Similarities subtest could hypothetically ask "How are green and blue the same?" The protocol manual lists a non-exhaustive list of possible answers. Say a kid answers, "They're dogs", that would get a 0. "They're both colors" would get a 1, whereas "They're both warm colors" would get a 2. The more abstract the 2 test terms, the more subjective the scoring can become.
-
Gotta mention the level of subjectiveness to the scoring of the #VCI subtests. #Psychologists and other testers who are not adequately trained in the needs and profiles of #ProfoundlyGifted kids may under or overscore those subtests.
In the end, #IQ is just a number that gives some interesting info about a person, but it should never form the basis of your entire identity. Trying to raise the bar that exceeds what a test can actually measure does nothing for a program, except pump up egos. /3

Brief history of Lourenço da Silva #Mendonça, 17thC #African #abolitionist
José #Nafafé from University of Bristol recently wrote a book about this fascinating man born in Kongo in the mid-1600s. Mendonça was the grandson of King Hari of the Kingdom of Ndongo, a breakaway state of Kongo. In 1671, after the defeating Battle of Kombi with Portugal, the Ndongo royal family was exiled to Brazil.#AfricanHistory #histodons #BlackMastodon #BlackHistory /1

"Asked how she would like New Zealanders to remember her leadership, Jacinda #Arden said “as someone who always tried to be kind.”“I hope I leave New Zealanders with a belief that you can be kind, but strong, empathetic but decisive, optimistic but focused. And that you can be your own kind of leader – one who knows when it’s time to go,” Ardern said."
