BUT, keep in mind that simplifying a text for English Learners is NOT a best practice. It is much better to enhance or otherwise mark up the original reading to make it accessible to #EnglishLearners.

That said, simplifying has its uses --- like for quickly developing background knowledge or as an introduction before reading the original version.

I created (with Claude code's help) a page to compare two texts --- to allow teachers to see exactly how a modified reading is different from the original. Many LLMs do not do a great job of modifying texts in the ways that teachers ask for. The "Reading Modification Analyzer" compares two texts and shows helpful data on how they differ.

On March 9th I’m helping launch AI Foundations for Educators, a 5-week online course that goes beyond workshop-level knowledge to guide teachers and school staff in developing a personalized framework for adapting classrooms to AI.

Shoveled snow. wow, there is a lot of it. I don't remember the last time we got this much at one time. Luckily where we are we didn't lose electricity, and we have sunny skies today.

Going to get very cold tonight, so prolly no school tomorrow. Taking it easy and getting a bunch of stuff done around the house.

School is cancelled tomorrow, but not sure the status of the outside PD that I'm scheduled to go to. It is for teachers, so if the city has the day off, they might cancel, but they may not. Oh, well, at least I don't have to be at school at 7:30.

Unfortunately, I was supposed to lead some #ESOL PD for my elementary and middle school tomorrow afternoon. That will be rescheduled, so not horrible, but was looking forward to it.

For some reason, the #programming class for high school students spends time on pascal, cobol, and fortran, as well as the more popular ones, but not #rust.

I learned pascal in h.s. in the 80s. Even then, I think cobol and fortran were ancient languages. Why spend any time on them, in h.s., today?

To be fair, they spend a lot of time on #python. On websites, on MS Windows boxes.

Time on #Linux or bash? Zero time.

Compile something locally? Heaven forbid!

No time to talk about collating data spread b/t several columns or files.

Tomorrow: re-leveling and enhancing readings.
