It's easy to forget in today's political climate that some decisions are made for secret altruistic ulterior motives. Just because we don't benefit doesn't mean the rigged system is bad.

I did a pro bono #SpEd consult and am left with a bit of a #moral dilemma, so tell me #edutooters, what would you do. 7yo girl attends a middle class #PublicSchool. A 1st grade boy repeatedly enters the girl's bathroom and taunts the girl's as he looks at them under the doors. After the girl's privacy had been violated a number of times over weeks, she finally kicked the boy in the face the last time, as he was peering at her. Girl is developmentally delayed and school punished her, not 1/2

Abolish the #college Honor Code?
The #student writer makes interesting and valid points about how #Princeton (and all #HigherEd for that matter) Honor Codes create a double disciplinary whammy to #FLI students. What's missing from the piece, though, is any stats on whether or not first gen college students are disproportionately brought up on violations. #edutooter #academia

Buried in this article abt the 6yo #Virginia boy who shot his #teacher is this telling statement about the child's #SpEd "care plan". Clearly the school failed to provide #FAPE if they were requiring the parents to chaperone their child throughout the day. I'm not a fan of more restrictive environments for young #students, but if a #school doesn't have the resources to ensure a safe environment for all kids under their care, then a change should have been made. #edutooter

When kids are tapered off one psychotropic drug only to be replaced with another, there can be huge mood and behavior issues. #Schools aren't notified during this 2-6wk period, so #disciplinary issues are attributed to the kid being defiant. This can result in #restraint, seclusion, & even #student #arrest. #Foster parents can be manipulated to agree to more restrictive school placements, if there's an #IEP. This just further damages the child's ability to receive an #education. /2 #edutooter

@BlackAzizAnansi I worked for an international K-12 online school that contracts with states to run charter schools. (I was over qualified for the job but hoping it might lead to something better in the co.) Had a dad call. His son suffered a TBI from football. I rearranged the kid's upcoming juniir yr schedule and gave the dad info on educational planning & issues to be in the look out for. Documented everything, including rationale. Local principal over-ruled the entire #SpEd plan because 1/2

#Parents and #teachers often forget that intellectual maturity does NOT equal #emotional #maturity with highly and profoundly #gifted kids. Instead of pathologizing normal #childhood behavior, the adults in the room need to re-evaluate their own expectations and provide support (if even necessary) to kids who are just being kids.

@Animystic The other point to keep in mind is that #FAPE and an #IEP do not guarantee that kids will learn and make progress in their #education in a #PublicSchool. #SCOTUS weighed in and said that schools are required to do more than just the minimum for kids with #SpecialNeeds but they still fail. There's no injustice in parents wanting their kids to learn after public schools have failed them.

@lussenpop Bottom line: The rights of #SpEd #students are often violated by schools that demand behavioral compliance. BIPs are ignored while schools don't provide an engaging #learning environment or the supports or interventions these kids need. Then the schools play charades with #ManifestationDetermination mtgs and blame the kids. Most parents don't fully understand their rights under #IDEA and it just becomes a vicious cycle of state sanctioned #abuse. #edutooter /2

I worked at a state uni teacher prep program and I can tell you those UG & grad students got almost no training in #SpecialEd. What we do know is that many teachers rely on "junior instructors" in their classrooms to support the needs of struggling #students. You know, the #gifted kids who get paired up on group projects with less engaged classmates - or how #PeerTutoring is used under the guise that it helps the GT kid reinforce their own learning.

Has anyone listened to #SoldAStory yet? It's in my #podcast queue, but I'm curious to hear opinions about it?

@kataplexis In the hopes of generating a productive discussion, what are alternatives to #education #grading in #HighSchool and #academia that don't focus on #rigor?

I've been part of the #DYS community for ~20yrs. It's entrance requirements exceed #Mensa. It never ceases to appall me how certain parents think the #IQ bar should be even higher. Yes, just like the opposite end of the spectrum of #intelligence, #ProfoundlyGifted kids have unique #education and #SEL needs, but there comes a point where we have to acknowledge the limitations of standardized testing. A higher number doesn't necessarily tell us what we think it does./1

@bigideasineducation I've written & taught state-approved #literacy CEU classes for early chidhood professionals, but I'm taking some time off from FT professional work. Still looking to connect with other #educators in the #SpEd #ISEA #GiftedEd #Davidson #DYS #EarlyCollege #SchoolReform #StudentArrests #DismantlePrisonPipeline and #JuvenileJustice fields.
