  3. The Canon for Sale: How Congress Handed Literature to a Homeschool Company

On March 17, 2026, the House Committee on Education and the Workforce passed H.R. 7661, a bill that would strip federal education funding from any public school whose libraries contain โ€œsexually oriented material.โ€ The billโ€™s formal title is the โ€œStop the Sexualization of Children Act,โ€ and it was introduced by Representative Mary Miller of Illinois on February 24, 2026, days after the State of the Union address. Eighteen Republican cosponsors signed on. No Democratic members supported the bill. The legislation now awaits a vote on the full House floor.

The mechanism is familiar. For nearly six years, state legislatures across the country have been passing laws that pull books from school shelves, fire librarians, and defund collections that contain material certain political actors find objectionable. Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Utah, and Iowa have led this effort, and the American Library Association counted 821 separate censorship attempts targeting 2,452 individual titles in calendar year 2024 alone. What H.R. 7661 does is federalize that local machinery. It amends the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, the primary pipeline for federal aid to disadvantaged students and Title I schools, and conditions that funding on compliance with a vague, sweeping content prohibition.

The word โ€œorientedโ€ in the bill does particular work. The sponsors chose โ€œsexually oriented materialโ€ rather than โ€œsexually explicit material,โ€ and the distinction matters. โ€œExplicitโ€ has a legal history. It has been tested in courts, defined by statutes, and bounded by precedent. โ€œOrientedโ€ has no such grounding. It is a word that expands rather than constrains, and the bill exploits that expansion by including within its definition any material that โ€œinvolves gender dysphoria or transgenderism.โ€ A book that mentions the existence of a transgender character, without depicting a single sexual act, falls within the billโ€™s scope. Health textbooks discussing puberty could fall within it. Biographies of trans public figures could fall within it. The vagueness is the point of the legislation.

Here is where the bill does something that deserves more attention than it has received. H.R. 7661 includes a carve-out for โ€œclassicโ€ works of art and literature. On its face, this seems like a reasonable safeguard. No one wants Michelangeloโ€™s David removed from an art history curriculum. The bill appears to acknowledge that some works containing nudity or mature themes belong in schools. What matters is who decides what qualifies as โ€œclassic.โ€

The bill answers that question by hard-coding references to two specific articles published on Compass Classroom, a commercial Christian homeschool curriculum company. The articles are โ€œClassics Every Middle Schooler Should Readโ€ by Thomas Purifoy, Jr. and โ€œClassics Every High Schooler Should Readโ€ by Mary Pierson Purifoy. The Purifoys founded Compass Classroom. Their company describes its mission as teaching โ€œa Biblical worldview and critical thinking skills.โ€ Its history courses apply โ€œa Christian worldview to the characters, events, theology, literature, art, and religious beliefs throughout history.โ€ Its catalog includes a course called โ€œIs Genesis History?โ€ and another built around Francis Schaefferโ€™s reformed theological framework. The company operates as a sectarian enterprise selling a theological product to a specific religious market.

A federal bill has outsourced the definition of acceptable American literature to a company that sells Bible-based homeschool videos for $39 a month.

Consider what that means in practice. Books on the Compass Classroom lists receive protection. Everything else receives none, and could cost a school district its federal funding. The entire weight of the American literary tradition, from Toni Morrison to James Baldwin to Sandra Cisneros to Jhumpa Lahiri, is filtered through the theological preferences of a Tennessee homeschool company. The lists become the canon, and the canon becomes the law.

This is the privatization of public literary authority. It is also the sectarianization of it. The First Amendmentโ€™s Establishment Clause exists precisely to prevent the federal government from privileging one religious viewpoint over others in the administration of public institutions. When Congress defines โ€œclassic literatureโ€ by reference to a company whose stated purpose is teaching a โ€œBiblical worldview,โ€ Congress has made a theological judgment about which stories are acceptable in American schools. That is an establishment of religion dressed in the language of child protection.

The billโ€™s supporters will argue that the lists are merely illustrative, that schools can still teach other works, that the carve-out protects educational freedom. The argument collapses under the weight of the funding mechanism. Schools do not have the luxury of testing whether their collections comply with a vague federal standard. Administrators will do what administrators always do when funding is threatened: they will remove anything that might trigger a challenge. The chilling effect is the policy. Fear is the mechanism by which censorship operates without needing a single book to be formally banned.

National Library Week begins on April 19, 2026. The ALAโ€™s honorary chair this year is Mychal Threets, the librarian and author who now hosts โ€œReading Rainbow.โ€ The irony requires no commentary. A country celebrating its libraries while its Congress advances legislation that would gut them is a country in active contradiction with itself.

Some legal analysts, including the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, have argued that H.R. 7661 is more campaign performance than viable legislation, a bill designed to generate headlines for its sponsorsโ€™ constituents rather than to survive judicial scrutiny. That assessment may be correct on the merits. The billโ€™s definition of โ€œsexually oriented materialโ€ would face serious First Amendment challenges, and its Establishment Clause vulnerabilities are obvious. The danger of dismissing H.R. 7661 as political theater, however, is that political theater has a way of becoming law when no one is watching. State-level book bans followed the same trajectory: first a handful of performative bills in 2021, then coordinated legislative campaigns across twenty states by 2024. The precedent the bill sets matters even if the bill itself dies. It normalizes the idea that Congress can define acceptable literature by reference to a private, religious reading list.

The deeper issue here extends beyond any single bill. H.R. 7661 is one expression of a broader pattern in which public institutions are hollowed out and their functions transferred to private, ideological actors. Public schools lose funding. Private alternatives gain market share. The definitions of knowledge, history, and literature are handed to commercial entities with theological commitments that a diverse democratic public does not share. This is how democratic infrastructure erodes: disassembled piece by piece, contract by contract, carve-out by carve-out, reading list by reading list.

Authors, publishers, librarians, and citizens who care about the survival of a pluralistic literary culture need to understand what is happening in H.R. 7661. The bill reaches far past the removal of a handful of controversial titles from school libraries. It determines who gets to define what literature is, and the answer this bill provides is: a company in Tennessee that sells Bible-based curriculum to homeschooling families. If that answer becomes federal law, the consequences will be measured in decades and in the silences where stories used to be.

The ALA urges citizens to call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask their representatives to oppose H.R. 7661 and to support the Right to Read Act (H.R. 6440 / S. 3365), which would fund well-resourced and well-staffed school libraries rather than threatening them.

ABC'S and 123's Teaching young ones how to read. Next Geometry and Chemistry. Now on to ancient history. Back to letters and the sounds they speak. All the while a toddler is tugging at my knee. The dog needs to be fed and probably outside to pee. But right now I am chilling in ancient Greece and teaching about Socrates. The life of a homeschool mama isn't for the weak. Through every lesson, it's His strength we seek.

Once #flatpak support is enabled, any logged in user can install additional flatpak software regardless of the system admin's desire. This leads to much abuse. I can't keep my kids from installing minecraft on our #homeschool computers. This is just the tame sort of abuse that can happen. Now think about this in a #corporate environment.

There needs to be a way of whitelisting/blacklisting apps.

  14. Genesis is historical... (!?!) It is!

The Bible explains how Adam's sin-nature is passed on to us. Sin corrupts our bodies and our world by dividing us from good and uniting us to evil. Scripture shows how we can overcome sin through unity with God and godly people.

The first thing that clued me in on the truth of Genesis, was Jesus' use of the text as literal facts. (Matthew 19:3-9) We inherit sin from Adam, because we are all part of him. We are also part of the classroom of life, in whatever condition it is handed down to us by our predecessors. (Exodus 20:5)

God was Adam's Father. The earth was Adam's mother. (Genesis 2:7, Isaiah 51:1-2, Romans 8:22) Eden was man's first classroom. The goal of this classroom was to teach us how to love. God's flawless, delightful love is what makes Him eternal.

From Adam, God made Eve. She was one with Adam and given back to Adam in a more helpful capacity. They were still one. This is the ultimate goal of our eternal lessons; they teach us how to remain one with God and one another.

The thing that destroys unity is sin. Sin doesn't cause God to abandon us, Sin is an act of abandoning unity with God and man in favor of oneself. Once sin was in the world, Adam and Eve began covering themselves from one another, and hiding from God. (Genesis 3:8-10) Division from God, who is love, results in death. (1 John 4:7-8, Romans 6:23, Jeremiah 3:19)

Sin added new lessons to our classroom. We were no longer fit for Eden. We learned about the problems we'd given God with our sin. Adam's lesson required more of his labor to make the earth produce good things. This gave humanity God's perspective. Our deviation from unity made it hard for God to make us produce good behavior. Eve's lesson required her to experience more pain to bear children. This reflects how we made God's work to deliver us from spiritual darkness more painful for Him. Our offenses against God and the earth change our environment to fit our need. Our lessons give us wisdom to see why sinful behavior cannot be part of eternity. Proverbs 30:17. Any logic we hold that does not promote eternal life is unsustainable, and therefore sin.

According to ancient Hebrew wisdom, you and I are living in the last age. We live in a world where our classroom has changed so much that Eden is hardly imaginable. A world without death is imaginable, but only for the elite. Even if we could live forever by the power of technology, without love, it wouldn't be worth the effort.

Thankfully, our heavenly Father is still teaching us. We still begin life helpless. This connects us to our parents through our conscience. This is how God implants in every person the value of compassion for the weak. We each know, deep down that we owe our lives to a helpful higher power. If we are thankful, we want to emulate our helpful higher power while we can. We can ask God for His Holy Spirit of truth and love. (Luke 11:9-13) Then we nurture His Spirit within us by a steady diet of His good logic in the Bible. (1Peter 2:2) This gives our heavenly Father influence in our lives, so He can empower us to help others. (Acts 10:44) In this way, we will overcome the lies of the enemy, and the world. (1John 4:4)

To overcome sin, we need only to reunite with God and one another. Compassionate love is the answer to our struggle against sin. We can ask for God's compassionate love to free us from temptation. We can also pay that love forward by helping the weak and needy. When we do these things, Eden is reborn in our hearts.

    Closing thoughts -

    1 Corinthians 10:13

"No temptation has come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful; he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able. With the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, so that you may be able to bear it."

"When I don't have an ounce of strength left in me to withstand a temptation, I remember this simple prayer; "Lord, Your word promises there is a way out of this, but I don't see it. Please show me the way." Our merciful Father has never failed to deliver on this promise. Our God is a God of miracle-working power.

    John 17:21
"I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are oneโ€”as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me."

It's so easy to accidentally give the world and the flesh more air-time than God and family. Setting aside time for God is the healthiest thing a person can do for their life. Reconnecting with our spiritual family is our second priority. So much of what we are tempted with, is only troubling us because we forget what's real and what matters. A spiritual diet that is high in truth and love will keep you satisfied. That way spiritual junk food doesn't have as much appeal.

May truth and love light our way!
