  1. CW: God's Not Dead: We The People Spoilers

    Holy frick this Taylor woman is unhinged. She thinks her husband was assassinated and that the public school system would put her son in a #SPED program and keep him from progressing in the way that he should?

    (I’m being a bit harsh but this seems a bit silly to me.)

  2. I did a pro bono #SpEd consult and am left with a bit of a #moral dilemma, so tell me #edutooters, what would you do. 7yo girl attends a middle class #PublicSchool. A 1st grade boy repeatedly enters the girl's bathroom and taunts the girl's as he looks at them under the doors. After the girl's privacy had been violated a number of times over weeks, she finally kicked the boy in the face the last time, as he was peering at her. Girl is developmentally delayed and school punished her, not 1/2

  3. IDEA: A Guide for Educators and Parents
    Education plays a crucial role in every child's life, but not all students have the same needs or abilities. Inclusion and equal opportunities for students with disabilities are paramount to ensure their success. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a f

  4. @autisticengineer I was also late diagnosed. I always knew something was different. I labeled it #introversion. But there were no #resources or #support. Honestly, #SPED in those days would have been harmful for me. What I needed was emotional and social support. I did fine educationally, by good fortune.

    The benefit knowing sooner would have been feeling less like a freak and winding up #SelfIsolating and #masking, on top of being in the #closet. So much #clarity now.

  5. CW: Autistic Burnout

    I dropped out of a couple of school district #SPED #advocacy groups. I was just too overwhelmed. Burned out. But this sucks. I want to be there to advocate. But I don’t want burn out. Is there a way to do that? I’m torn.

    I’m hesitant to commit because I fear burnout. But I want to represent. Is this just dumb? I’m not sure. So I’m asking, honestly.

  6. Important reporting on off-the-books measures that some schools take to keep kids with disabilities out of class, rather than putting in place more supports to include them.

  7. Buried in this article abt the 6yo #Virginia boy who shot his #teacher is this telling statement about the child's #SpEd "care plan". Clearly the school failed to provide #FAPE if they were requiring the parents to chaperone their child throughout the day. I'm not a fan of more restrictive environments for young #students, but if a #school doesn't have the resources to ensure a safe environment for all kids under their care, then a change should have been made. #edutooter

  8. @BlackAzizAnansi I worked for an international K-12 online school that contracts with states to run charter schools. (I was over qualified for the job but hoping it might lead to something better in the co.) Had a dad call. His son suffered a TBI from football. I rearranged the kid's upcoming juniir yr schedule and gave the dad info on educational planning & issues to be in the look out for. Documented everything, including rationale. Local principal over-ruled the entire #SpEd plan because 1/2

  9. Can we do a real high school level #genetics lab using only #LEGOs? Well, yes we can! Here is the info & lab. Honors students loved it, and this was originally designed from the ground up for our #SPED students.

  11. I'm a believer in reversing the traditional vector of IEPs, scaffolding & differentiation - by that I mean, once one makes any IEP adaptations, then why not then fold those adaptations back into the general class, whenever possible?
    Much of what I originally made for students with IEPs became sought after by all my other students, and then students of other teachers, from the Honors science classes (and now from other schools.)

  14. How can we bring #students who are lacking skills up to speed on producing power - the science, physics, & #environmental impact?

    * Coal, Oil, or Natural gas power

    * Nuclear fission, Nuclear fusion

    * Solar power, Hydroelectric

    * #Tidal, Wind, or #Geothermal power

    I made this graphics and animated GIF rich resource for our #ELA and #SPED students, which then became requested by college prep & honors students

  15. @lovelybookshelf You bring up an impt point about accurately reporting #homeschool enrollment statistics: What actually constitutes #HomeEducation?

    If a child is subject to attendance requirements - state testing (not chosen by the parent) - is eligible to receive #SpEd and #IEP services - has access to sports and after-school programming BUT all their instruction happens at home through online instruction, that child is generally not considered a homeschooler.

  16. @Leork Not defending flat-earthers, but if you're going to come after #homeschooling & call certain #curriculum choices #ChildAbuse, then you have to look at what #PublicSchools are teaching. Like #Texas teaching Moses as essentially a US Founding Father. Or, the countless districts that use Fountas & Pinella or Calkins instructional material that do not actually teach kids to read. If you really want to talk about abuse, we can examine the excessive use of restraint & seclusion on #SpEd kids.

  17. CW: Week recap of school drama and autistic parenting

    @CarolNelson523 @simid Oh my yes, I went through school in the 70's and 80's, and #SPED was a room some kids went to. I'm glad it's "better" now but it's still rough to navigate.

  18. @lussenpop Bottom line: The rights of #SpEd #students are often violated by schools that demand behavioral compliance. BIPs are ignored while schools don't provide an engaging #learning environment or the supports or interventions these kids need. Then the schools play charades with #ManifestationDetermination mtgs and blame the kids. Most parents don't fully understand their rights under #IDEA and it just becomes a vicious cycle of state sanctioned #abuse. #edutooter /2
