    Quadvium – Tetradōm Review

    Who needs two guitar players when you could have two master bass players at the helm? Quadvium seeks to answer this question with the fiery fingerwork of metal legends Steve DiGiorgio and Jeroen Paul Thesseling. DiGiorgio revolutionized bass playing in the metalsphere through radical death works with Autopsy, Death,1 and his own band, Sadus. Even if you don’t know his name, you may recognize these hallmarks of percussive and frenetic bass engineering, or any number of the thrashy, deathly, or progressive albums to which he has lent a wild, throbbing pulse. Likewise, Thesseling has weaved his way around celebrated releases, designing a style equally tricky but heavier in jazz-indebted fusion. Both Pestilence’s Spheres and Obscura’s breakout albums Cosmogenesis and Omnivium would not have seen the same light without his buttery and bleeping presence.

    In the collision of these two thick-stringed giants, Tetradōm weaves and wobbles in delectable harmony. The role of bass in rock and metal arrangements rarely settles into that of the lead. But with conductors of this caliber on fretless, and extended-range bass devices,2 nasally slides, flatulent thumps, and snarling shuffles rumble about this airy but grounded soundstage. Despite the low-end firepower at play, each accompanying performer brings flair and experience to their respective lanes. Guitarist (and engineer for Tetradōm) Eve (Kaathe) brings a flowing touch and additional melodic guide—opener “Moksha” even leads with her crystalline phrasing—that borrows from her tenure with instrumental progressive outlet Myth of I. And kitmeister Yuma van Eekelen has a storied rhythmic history with understated bands Our Oceans and Exivious that allows his textural phrasing to embolden the space between flying frequencies. No shortage of talent befalls Quadvium’s calculated stride.

    Though a tag of supergroup may follow Quadvium, Tetradōm leads with an ear for the tasteful and impactful rather than one deafened by excess. All members of Quadvium possess an overwhelming prowess and creativity that edges toward the funky fresh technicality of a fusion act like Tribal Tech. Yet, with a djent-like groove, Quadvium reclaims the sterile nature of scooped drop-F chugging against glitchy electronic backings with panned wide, warm bass massaging (“Apophis,” “Adhyasa”). Popping harmonics blare3 in a glory as flighty interruptions amongst Animals as Leaders-knotted riffage, all while capturing the exploratory jazz feel of the iconic and influential Jaco Pastorius (“Náströnd”). Howling and whinnying melodies signal a path around which Eve and van Eekelen can prance in touch-and-go solo flutters and cymbal-savvy atmosphere (“Sarab,” “Eidolon”). The breadth of techniques and tones on display requires an open and engaged mind to enjoy. But Quadvium’s resonant, interwoven throughput tied fast to ever-unfolding refrains never drifts into solo-laden, wandering note tedium.

    Such a bass-forward presentation—and not in the subwoofer booming way that modern hip-hop or electronic music can be—requires a listening setup with an extra oomph through the low and mid range. I remember the first time I listened to Gordian Knot’s “Arsis,” a subtle solo bass intro to 2003’s classic, Emergent, I could have sworn nothing emerged from my crackling Logitech speakers, its subtle hum nary an auditory blip. Quadvium doesn’t render their instrumental dialogue quite as soft-spoken, with performers’ metal edges and jazzy chatter (and Eve’s cybersynth sound design) filling the room with bright, up-front, persistent movement. But to hear the nuances, and fall into a fuller love with Tetradōm, you may have to reach for your richest listening mode so that you lose neither the delicate drum teasing intro to “Ghardus”—and the bass duo’s subsequent descent to the lowest range of the experience—nor the delicate floor-scraping harmonies of “Apophis.” Of course, you could just crank that volume knob, lay out on the floor, and let the braying call-and-response bends of “Sarab” or the modulated stacked-track bliss of “Eidolon” vibrate your being to a higher existence.

    Without a single word, Quadvium manages to conjure the esoteric nature that Tetradōm and its philosophy-inspired titles promise. Its strike, though, takes full shape, eschewing the potential for amorphous free jazz tone flexing that fusion music can embody. DiGiorgio and Thesseling have a vision of what bass can be in a rock and metal context, and Tetradōm realizes that with every squeaking slide, pattering finger roll, cascading chord. Masters don’t always produce hungry music, but Quadvium has shown their appetite remains growling.

    Der #Thunderbird macht mir unfassbar viel Spaß! 🤘😄

    Hatte ihn jetzt bei 2 Proben dabei und damit rockt es sich einfach nur geil, wenn der schön tief und der Kopf aber gut greifbar oben hängt.
    Alleine klingt der einfach rotzig, knurrig cool. Ich mag seinen Sound sehr!
    Es stellte sich aber raus, dass er im Bandcontext untergeht. Er produziert dann eine Basswand, die man spürt, Anschläge und genaue Noten hört man nicht mehr, wenn da 2 Gitarren dazu dröhnen. Da halfen auch keine Einstellungen am Verstärker so wirklich..

    Habe gestern dann wieder meinen     #Cort #Bass mitgenommen, da hört man dann wieder den Anschlag und die Töne klar durch die Gitarrenwand durch..
    Schade.. Der Thunderbird passt scheinbar vom Klang her nicht in eine schnell spielende Punkrock Band. Da braucht es mehr das Klicken des Anschlags, um der "Wand" ein paar Fugen zu geben.

    Aber aufgeben tue ich den noch nicht.. Vielleicht brauche ich noch ne Metalband, in die er evtl besser passt..     🤪

    L’infolettre du 13 octobre 2025 : les Mondiaux de gravel, la fin d’Israel Premier Tech…

    Les Mondiaux de gravel ne représentent toujours pas la discipline

    Tadej Pogacar champion du monde sur route, cela semble une évidence. Jenny Risveds et Alan Hatherly en arc-en-ciel sur le VTT, aussi. Mais Florian Vermeersch, spécialiste de la route, qui dispute deux courses de gravel par an, en tant que champion du monde de gravel ? Lorena Wiebes, qui a glané 25 succès sur la route cette saison, avec le maillot irisé d’une discipline qu’elle côtoie deux à trois fois chaque année ? Oui, les championnats du monde de gravel organisés par l’Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) n’ont pas la même aura que sur les autres disciplines. Ils sont une porte d’entrée à un autre public, habitué à la route. Ils permettent à ceux qui fréquentent les pelotons le reste de la saison de s’essayer à un exercice plus libre et plus “fun”. Mais ils ne représentent en rien l’habituelle hiérarchie qui s’établit au cours du reste de l’année, aux quatre coins du monde.

    Florian Vermeersch et Lorena Wiebes ont mérité leur titre au vu des courses disputées ce week-end du côté de Maastricht (bien que la course féminine soit sujette à discussion, avec une vainqueure bien aidée par le soutien surprise d’une compatriote, Yara Kastelijn, qui a rattrapé dans les 200 derniers mètres une autre compatriote partie onze kilomètres plus tôt, Shirin van Anrooij). Mais que représentent ces titres quand une large partie des cyclistes qui font honneur à la discipline le reste de l’année font l’impasse sur ces Mondiaux ? D’aucuns pourraient arguer qu’il n’est pas rare que des stars décident d’éviter une course au maillot arc-en-ciel en raison d’un parcours inadéquat ou d’un long voyage, comme ce fut le cas cette année au Rwanda pour certains spécialistes de la route. Mais cette fois, on parle d’un pays majeur du gravel qui décide depuis les débuts de ces Mondiaux, en 2022, de faire l’impasse sur ce rendez-vous programmé début octobre : les États-Unis.

    Faute de soutien de la part de la fédération américaine de cyclisme, qui ne couvre pas les coûts du voyage jusqu’en Europe (NDLR : cela n’a pas empêché Magdeleine Vallières de devenir championne du monde quasiment à ses frais, malgré un soutien limité de la fédération canadienne de cyclisme) ; en raison également d’un déplacement très lourd en fin de saison ; et au vu de primes très peu intéressantes par rapport aux autres courses disputées outre-Atlantique, bon nombre de représentants états-uniens ont décidé de ne pas participer à ce rendez-vous mondial dans le Limbourg néerlandais. Ces raisons étaient déjà évoquées ces dernières années pour confirmer l’absence des Américains lors des Mondiaux menés par l’UCI, outre des parcours souvent plus taillés pour des coureurs sur route, faute de passages techniques. À tel point que dans le monde du gravel, les courses du Lifetime Grand Prix aux États-Unis, comme l’Unbound Gravel, peuvent être considérés par certains comme des Mondiaux officieux, lors desquels le rapport de forces est inversé : ce sont cette fois les locaux qui dominent, et les Européens font office d’invités exceptionnels.

    L’UCI a donc fait son choix : privilégier la présence de vedettes de la route sur le gravel lors de ce seul événement mondial, en fin de saison, pour tenter d’attirer le plus large public possible devant sa course. Mais sans les personnes qui font habituellement vivre la discipline, comment le gravel peut-il vraiment grandir ? Voir Gianni Vermeersch, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, Matej Mohoric, Kasia Niewiadoma, Mathieu van der Poel, Marianne Vos, Lorena Wiebes et Florian Vermeersch s’offrir ces titres mondiaux, cela revient à rappeler que le gravel ne peut se défaire de la route, qu’elle n’est finalement qu’un dessert, et que celles et ceux qui se démènent toute la saison dans des structures spécialisées n’ont pas le niveau pour dominer la discipline. Les courses disputées tout au long de la saison, en Europe ou aux États-Unis, démontrent pourtant à quel point le gravel peut être rude, en raison d’une tactique à faire évoluer à chaque virage et des problèmes mécaniques qui peuvent rapidement transformer une course. Mais ce week-end, on a assisté à un spectacle tout autre. Pas mieux ou moins bien, juste différent de ce qu’est le gravel le reste de l’année.

    Israel Premier Tech ne sera plus Israel Premier Tech

    Cela a été la grande surprise de la semaine : après avoir confirmé qu’elle ne participera pas non plus au Tour de Lombardie en raison d’un risque de manifestation contre sa présence, l’équipe Israel Premier Tech a indiqué lundi dernier que le co-fondateur et co-propriétaire israélo-canadien de la structure, Sylvan Adams, allait “arrêter d’être impliqué au quotidien” et ne parlerait plus “au nom de l’équipe, se concentrant sur son rôle de président du World Jewish Congress”. Sylvan Adams, dans un communiqué distinct, a confirmé cesser “toute implication active au sein de l’équipe”. Un sacré pas pour la formation sponsorisée par le milliardaire depuis 2017.

    Pour rappel, Israel Premier Tech ne bénéficiait d’aucun soutien direct de la part de l’État d’Israël, si ce ne sont des partenariats ponctuels avec l’office du tourisme israélien. Le soutien de l’équipe pour le pays du Proche-Orient était principalement liée à l’identité de l’équipe et au soutien équivoque de Sylvan Adams pour le pays dont il se disait lui-même ambassadeur et dont il soutenait l’action sur la bande de Gaza. Ce sont ces positions, principalement, qui ont mené aux protestations à l’encontre de la présence de la ProTeam sur le dernier Tour d’Espagne et sur les courses italiennes automnales. Les partenaires de la structure, l’entreprise canadienne Premier Tech et le fabricant de vélos Factor, avaient indiqué leur souhait de se démarquer de cette image de soutien à Israël.

    Que deviendra exactement Israel Premier Tech ? L’équipe ne l’a pas encore communiqué. Elle devrait normalement recevoir sa licence WorldTour au vu de son classement sportif sur les trois dernières années, mais son budget pourrait être largement amputé sans le soutien de Sylvan Adams. Il lui faudra pourtant bien plus que les 15 millions qui serait actuellement son budget pour poursuivre au plus haut niveau.

    • La Cofidis a lancé une valse de prolongations cette semaine : l’Espagnol Ion Izagirre (36 ans) et l’Allemand Emanuel Buchmann (32 ans) ont signé jusqu’à fin 2027, alors que le Français Nicolas Debeaumarché (27 ans) a obtenu une saison supplémentaire au sein de l’équipe nordiste.

    🏥 Sur la touche

    • Le Français Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies) a été renversé mardi dernier par un véhicule de livraison sur ses routes d’entraînement en Drôme, a fait savoir son père au quotidien Le Dauphiné Libéré. S’il n’a pas de fracture, le coureur de 31 ans risque de devoir mettre un terme précoce à sa saison, et même à sa carrière. Le père de Pierre Latour a en effet confié au journal que Pierre Latour, sans contrat pour 2026, envisageait de pendre son vélo au clou après le Chrono des Nations, le 19 octobre prochain. En onze saisons professionnelles, il a notamment remporté une étape du Tour d’Espagne, deux titres de champion de France du contre-la-montre et a gagné cette saison une étape des Boucles de la Mayenne.

    ❌ Sur le départ

    • Après 14 saisons parmi les professionnels, le Français Arnaud Démare (Arkéa-B&B Hôtels) a mis fin à sa carrière dimanche sur Paris-Tours. L’homme aux 97 victoires a décidé de s’arrêter à l’âge de 34 ans, au bout d’une carrière marquée par trois titres de champion de France sur route, deux classements par points sur le Tour d’Italie, outre huit étapes sur le Giro, deux étapes du Tour de France, un Milan-Sanremo, un Tour de Wallonie, deux Paris-Tours… Sans oublier son titre de champion du monde chez les espoirs en 2011. Il restera l’un des meilleurs sprinters français du XXIe siècle.

    • Le puncheur français Anthony Perez (Cofidis) a également annoncé la fin de sa carrière à l’âge de 34 ans. Le coureur toulousain s’arrête au bout de dix saisons toutes terminées sous le maillot de la Cofidis. Son palmarès comporte notamment deux étapes du Tour du Luxembourg, la Drôme Classic et la Classic Loire Atlantique.
    • Faute de contrat pour la saison prochaine, le Belge Pieter Serry (Soudal Quick-Step) a mis un terme à sa carrière samedi dernier à l’occasion du Tour de Lombardie. Le coureur de 36 ans s’arrête au bout de 16 saisons professionnelles, dont 13 au sein de la structure Quick Step. Équipier modèle, il n’a pas connu de succès individuel chez les professionnels, mais a notamment terminé 3e de la Flèche Brabançonne en 2012, 7e du Tour de Lombardie et 8e de la Clasica San Sebastian en 2013 ou encore 3e du Tour de Wallonie en 2018.
    • Après une dernière saison sous le maillot de Van Rysel-Roubaix, le Belge Baptiste Planckaert (37 ans) a pendu son vélo au clou au terme du Grand Prix de clôture de Zele, mercredi dernier. Équipier rapide au sprint, il a notamment remporté le Tour de Cologne et la Polynormande durant sa carrière débutée en 2010 chez Landbouwkrediet, avant des passages chez Katusha-Alpecin, Wallonie-Bruxelles et Intermarché-Wanty.

    • Alexandre Vinokourov Jr., l’un des fils d’Alexandre Vinokourov, a décidé de mettre un terme à ses rêves de carrière professionnel à l’âge de 23 ans. Le coureur a expliqué avoir subi de lourdes blessures ces dernières saisons, l’empêchant de prester au plus haut niveau. “Je peux maintenant me concentrer sur d’autres aspects de ma vie et penser au futur”, a-t-il confié par voie de communiqué, confirmant son souhait d’avancer hors du peloton.
    • Sur Binche-Chimay-Binche, la Slovène Eugenia Bujak (Cofidis) a été célébrée par le peloton pour la dernière course de sa carrière. La coureuse de 36 ans s’arrête au bout de douze saisons. Elle a notamment remporté quatre titres de championne de Slovénie sur route et de contre-la-montre, outre un titre de championne de Pologne sur route et de contre-la-montre avant sa naturalisation, mais aussi deux étapes de la Route de France ou encore la Classic Loire Agglomération (ou GP de Pouay féminin).

    🖤 Carnet noir

    • Le monde médiatico-cycliste a été marqué cette semaine par l’annonce par le quotidien L’Équipe du décès de Guillaume Di Grazia, ancien commentateur des courses cyclistes pour Eurosport. L’homme de 52 ans est décédé à la suite d’un accident lors d’une fête taurine à Langlade, dans le Gard (sud de la France). Il avait quitté la chaîne cet été, par la petite porte, après avoir été suspendu à deux reprises en raison de comportement inapproprié à l’encontre d’une maquilleuse, en avril dernier. Guillaume Di Grazia était l’emblématique commentateur du cyclisme sur Eurosport depuis plus de quinze ans, après le départ de Patrick Chassé puis d’Alexandre Pasteur. Il était également actif sur le saut à skis, le combiné nordique et le football. Eurosport lui a rendu hommage dans une vidéo sur son site internet.

    🦸‍♀️ Maillots

    • Malgré l’annonce d’une fusion prochaine entre Intermarché-Wanty et Lotto, l’équipe de cyclo-cross Charles Liégeois Roastery CX, émanation d’Intermarché-Wanty, poursuivra bien cet hiver dans les labourés. Elle a présenté cette semaine un nouveau maillot orange et noir qui sera porté tout l’hiver par Julie Brouwers, Gerben Kuypers (qui passera chez Pauwels Sauzen-Altez Industriebouw le 1er janvier 2026) et Lauren Molengraaf, notamment.

    🤑 Économie

    • L’équipe Wagner Bazin WB, c’est terminé, si l’on en croit les informations des quotidiens du groupe IPM. La formation dirigée par Christophe Brandt n’aurait plus d’accord avec les sponsors français Wagner Bazin qui continueraient ainsi dans une entité séparée, en France, au niveau continental. Pour la structure venue de Wallonie Bruxelles, il s’agirait d’un adieu au peloton après 15 saisons. Le groupe avait déjà perdu cette saison le soutien de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, structure publique qui fournissait un subside pour la formation de jeunes Wallons et Bruxellois.
    • Reconverti depuis cette année dans le gravel au sein de l’équipe spécialisée Classified X Rose, le Belge Thomas De Gendt a annoncé cette semaine lancer sa propre structure, baptisée Breakaway Gravel Team. Une référence évidente aux nombreuses échappées qui ont marqué sa longue carrière sur route. Le Gantois n’a pas encore annoncé qui l’accompagneront dans l’aventure pour la prochaine saison.
    • Parmi les nouveautés du calendrier sur route 2026 publié cette semaine par l’Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), une course a attiré l’attention des observateurs : Lyon-Turin. Cette course par étapes de catégorie 2.1 entre la France et l’Italie se déroulera du 1er au 3 juillet, soit les trois jours précédant le Tour de France. Aucun autre détail n’a toutefois pas été dévoilé, mais la course devrait être montagneuse au vu du décor alpestre entre les deux villes.
    • Jusqu’ici en catégorie 1.1, le Grand Prix de l’Escaut féminin sera dès la saison prochaine en catégorie ProSeries. La course disputée à Schoten, en province d’Anvers, le 8 avril sera ainsi au même niveau que la course masculine, qui figurait déjà parmi les ProSeries depuis l’apparition de la catégorie dans le calendrier professionnel.

    🌈 Sélections

    • Belgian Cycling, la fédération belge de cyclisme, a révélé les sélections pour les championnats du monde de cyclisme sur piste, prévus du 22 au 26 octobre à Santiago du Chili. En l’absence de Lotte Kopecky, blessée début septembre, le groupe sera notamment mené par Shari Bossuyt chez les femmes, au côté de Katrijn De Clercq, Hélène Hesters, Marith Vanhove et Luca Vierstraete. Du côté masculin, Lowie Nulens sera le seul sélectionné sur les courses de vitesse, alors qu’en endurance, Jasper De Buyst sera présent avec Lindsay De Vylder, Fabio Van den Bossche, Jules Hesters, Noah Vandenbranden et Milan Van den Haute.

    📌 Autres

    • Sacré camouflet pour l’Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) : l’Autorité belge de la concurrence (ABC) a plaidé en faveur du constructeur américain de systèmes de transmission SRAM et a suspendu le protocole de test de l’UCI prévu sur le Tour de Guangxi autour des limitations de braquet à un rapport de transmission 54×11. La SRAM arguait que cette nouvelle norme perturbait la concurrence. Selon l’ABC, “la norme ainsi que sa procédure d’adoption ne répondent pas aux conditions requises d’objectivité et de transparence, avec pour effet de générer des effets disproportionnés à l’égard du plaignant”. Si l’UCI impose une telle norme, ou une autre qui serait jugée discriminatoire par l’ABC, une astreinte pourra être imposée. L’UCI conteste ces conclusions et dit regretter que “la sécurité des coureurs ne semble pas être un objectif partagé”. Un appel a été déposé, mais il n’est pas encore certain que le protocole de test pourra être confirmé au Tour de Guangxi, qui débute mardi.

    The Edinburgh Radium Bomb: the thread about the Beechmount Institute

    A couple of things happened recently. A fire at the former Corstorphine Hospital prompted me to read up and write about the history of that establishment and it was also the annual Christian Aid bumper booksale in Edinburgh, at which I picked up an excellent history of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh1 (amongst many other things.) These circumstances converged to pique my interest in Beechmount, a grand mansion house which was, for a short time at least, the exotic and atomic sounding National Radium Centre and a pioneer in the field of radiotherapy.

    Beechmount, set amongst 8 acres of woodland, was built in 1900 in an Italianate style to designs by Messrs McArthy & Watson as the private residence of Sir George and Lady Mary Anne Anderson. The land was feud from the Beechwood Mains estate at Murrayfield and its name was a simple amalgam of the neighbouring properties of Beechwood and Belmont.

    Sir George was treasurer of the Bank of Scotland from 1898 to 1917, which explains how the coat of arms of that institution came to be found above the house’s main door and grand fireplace. He was the first Scottish “banker knight“, his title conferred for services to his industry. After his retirement in 1917, the Andersons spent their retirement at Beechmount as respected members of Edinburgh society. Sir George died there on December 1st 1923, aged 78. Lady Anne survived him before she too passed away in the house on 26th May 1926, aged 80. Her husband had intended that the house be left to his bank as an official residence for its treasurer but Lady Anne instead bequeathed it to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. She recommended it be used as a convalescent home for servicemen injured during World War I but gave the hospital managers final discretion as to its use. In addition, £5,000 was left to them to help adapt the property to its new purpose.

    And that may have been that for the Beechmount story had it not been for the rapid development of a new field of medicine. In 1926, the Infirmary had been able to purchase 500mg of the radioactive element Radium – a substantial proportion of the entire global supply of it at that time – as the result of a donation of £5,000. It began to experiment in its use for the treatment of “malignant disease“; cancer. Prior to this, the only known treatment was surgical removal of tumours and the new branch is what we now call Radiotherapy. To begin with, Radium treatments were undertaken in the main buildings of the Infirmary at Lauriston Place by introducing tiny amounts of the element directly into tumours using needles, different coloured threads attached to them indicating the radioactive strength. However it soon became clear that a specialised unit dedicated to the therapy would be desirable and in 1928 it was decided that Lady Anderson’s bequest should be fitted out as such; the Beechmount Radium Institute.

    The medical promise of Radium was great but so too were the costs, dangers and difficulties associated with its use. As a result, in 1929 the government established the Radium Trust to source and hold supplies of the wonder material for the nation and the National Radium Commission to oversee its regulation and distribution. The Commission did not want to deal purely with hospitals and so in 1930 a joint partnership between the Royal Infirmary and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Edinburgh was set up to combine their teaching and research in the field in order that they could mutually benefit from the national supply. In the meantime £11,000 was spent on the Beechmount project and the new facility, with 36 in-patient beds, was opened in October 1932. To begin with patients continued to be treated at the Infirmary and were sent to the new annexe for their pre- and post-treatment convalescent care, however the entire process was soon centralised at the Institute.

    The facility was overseen by the respected surgeon John James McIntosh (J.J.M.) Shaw, a military doctor, pioneer in re-constructive plastic surgery and member of both the Radium Trust and Commission. Its first matron was Margaret Colville Marshall, later “Lady Superintendent” of the Infirmary and awarded the OBE for this service. From his base at Beechmount, J.J.M. oversaw the establishment of the Cancer Control Organisation for Edinburgh and Southeast Scotland in 1934, a group of influential (and wealthy) members of society to help organising towards the running costs of the Institute. That same year the Radium Commission approved the Infirmary’s proposal that Beechmount become the National Radium Centre for southeast Scotland, the first of five such centres proposed for the country.

    With the support of the Commission an additional 80omg of Radium was acquired and combined with the existing supply to form a mass unit of the material that was called a “Radium Bomb“. This made history as the first such Bomb outside of London and meant that treatments could be made indirectly, focussing the emitted radiation towards the tumour from a few inches away, rather than introducing it directly on needles. This new method was far more efficient and effective and was far safer for both the patient and the medical staff. The Commission also provided funding to pay for the running costs of the Bomb and to safely maintain and house it.

    In 1936, J.J.M. reported that “treatment of malignant disease in certain situations such as the throat by means of the radium mass unit or ‘bomb’ has surpassed anything previously known“. He was joined at this time by Dr Margaret (Peggy) Tod as Honorary Associate Assistant Surgeon. Tod stayed for only a year before moving on to become the Deputy Director of the Holt Radium Institute in Manchester, but made “an outstanding contribution to the pioneering work at Beechmount“. The Infirmary’s capacity to administer radiotherapy increased exponentially as a result of dedicating Beechmount to it; in 1939 it reported over 15,000 treatments had been administered, up from only 907 just five years previously.

    From 1937, the matron was Jean Ritchie and she served in this post until 1939 when the Institute was closed “for the duration” and re-purposed as a convalescent Auxiliary Hospital; this scheme was directly funded by central government and allowed patients to be removed from the main Infirmary thus freeing up capacity there for dedicated military use or for civilians injured as a result of air raids. The Radium Bomb was removed to the Infirmary and buried at the bottom of a 40 foot deep well shaft to avoid it resulting in a “dirty bomb” in the event it was hit by an air raid. Sadly, Dr Shaw died on wartime active service with the Royal Army Medical Corps in Cairo in September 1940, aged 54, having contracted dysentery while serving as the Consultant Surgeon to the Army GHQ.

    After the war, Radiotherapy in Edinburgh was concentrated at the Western General Hospital and Beechmount was not returned to that use. Instead it remained as a 46 bed convalescent home, operated in tandem with the Corstorphine Home and attached to the Royal Infirmary. In 1974, reorganisation of the medical bureaucracy saw Beechmount detached from the Infirmary and grouped in with other small district hospitals in the Lothians to provide specialist geriatric convalescent care.

    One long-standing problem of Beechmount was that the building was accessible from the main road only by a very steep set of stairs or a driveway with multiple hairpin bends. In 1969 an ambulance driver did not correctly apply the brakes of his vehicle resulting in it careering 50 yards down the embankment before progress was arrested by a mature tree. Fortunately the occupants, Mrs Ella Hamersley and Mr Charles Baker, suffered only minor injuries. For the benefit of less mobile visitors to the hospital, members of the Corstorphine Rotary Club used their own cars to provide a shuttle service of rides up and down the gradient during visiting hours.

    In 1987 the Lothian Health Board denied that it had plans to either close Beechmount Hospital or convert it into a unit for the specialised treatment of patients with HIV/AIDS. However the following year it proposed the closure and sale of the hospital amid a widespread rationalisation and cost cutting plan. The Board cited the fact that the facility was costing £360,000 a year to run, its opponents countered that the running costs of convalescent hospital beds was only a third of that at major hospitals like the Royal Infirmary or the Western General. But the site was potentially very valuable to developers and with the support of the Secretary of State for Scotland, in what the Daily Record dubbed the “Sick Sale of the Century“, Scotland’s health boards were backed from the top to dispose of a swathe of surplus property on the open market to raise money for their capital budgets. Beechmount was closed in 1989 and the house and grounds were to be sold the following year for £1.8 million. The sale fell through however, as did a scheme to convert it into a Hotel. In 1993 the Health Board intended to build a new dental hospital at Beechmount but found it could not afford the renovation costs of £6 million. The premises were in the interim leased to the Scottish Wildlife Trust who used it for offices and returned to the market and finally sold by the Health Board in 1996, the former staff accommodation being converted into apartments and returned to residential use.     I've just finished "A Sentimental Journey". Charming work, half novel, half travel literature, all infused with both a playful flirtatiousness and an irony that can leave the reader guessing yet not frustrated. The Maria episode that comes towards the end of the book and was foreshadowed in "Tristram Shandy" captured the imagination of readers and artists.

    How to protect the hidden diversity in grass shoots? Stop mowing!

    In every blade of grass, there is a treasure trove of biodiversity: tiny wasps, midges, flies, beetles and other insects. Researchers at our Uni and #HUN-REN measured, investigated and searched for insects in over 23,000 shoots of grass. They found 255 species in year-round grass species, but not one in the short-lived, annual grass species.

    Their conclusion is that grassland should not be mown for several years: stable insect populations need undisturbed refuges with intact shoots of grass to live: uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html
