  1. How to protect the hidden diversity in grass shoots? Stop mowing!

In every blade of grass, there is a treasure trove of biodiversity: tiny wasps, midges, flies, beetles and other insects. Researchers at our Uni and #HUN-REN measured, investigated and searched for insects in over 23,000 shoots of grass. They found 255 species in year-round grass species, but not one in the short-lived, annual grass species.

Their conclusion is that grassland should not be mown for several years: stable insect populations need undisturbed refuges with intact shoots of grass to live: uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html

Capture the buzz of a summer garden with this charming macro photograph. The image centers on a vibrant Purple Coneflower (Echinacea), its soft lavender-pink petals drooping gracefully around the spiky, rusty-orange cone.

The real stars of the show are the two visitors sharing a moment: a fuzzy honeybee resting on the petals and a tiny hoverfly perched right next to it on the cone.

  7. Cherry Gall

The cherry gall wasp (scientific name: Cynips quercusfolii) is a tiny gall wasp that causes growths, or ‘galls’, on the undersides of oak leaves. The grub remains in the gall after leaf-fall, emerging as an adult wasp in winter. This asexual generation will lay its eggs on the oak tree trunk, which eventually mature to the sexual generation; this generation mates and produces the more obvious galls. The galls look like red cherries and are about 2cm in diameter. The larvae of the wasp feed on the host tissues but cause little damage. The cherry gall wasp is common and can be found from July to October.

  8. Good Sunday morning, everyone. This year we have only seen one monarch butterfly, but in the past, we saw many. Here is a mating pair on some old Queen Anne's lace. They obviously weren't disturbed by me and my camera.
    Have a good day, friends.
