This alms-house (low-income public housing they might say today?) was originally a chapel in Warwick, built in 1126 CE. It was used by trade guilds and then became an alms-house in 1571. It is still an alms-house today, almost 500 years later.

It's also open to the public.

With its haunting melody, and the romantic myth that it was written by #HenryVIII as a love song for #AnneBoleyn, Greensleeves has remained popular over the centuries and today, is probably the best known of all #Tudor #songs.

However there is no proven connection to Henry VIII, and the earliest mention of the broadside ballad called #Greensleeves was not until September 1580, (some 33 years after his death). It was an immediate hit, and a number of imitations and parodies were produced in the following months and years.

Our recording uses the text from 'A Handful of Pleasant Delights', 1584 - the earliest surviving source. There are many verses, some of which contain lovely descriptions of #Elizabethan clothing and other aspects of #MaterialCulture

This is a big deal.

It was the first official account of Elizabeth I’s reign, one of the most valuable sources on early modern Britain, commissioned by her successor, King James I. But, for 400 years, no one has been able to read passages on hundreds of pages of this manuscript because they had been so heavily revised and self-censored by their 17th-century author, apparently to avoid punishment for offending his patron.

Many things that modern critics call peculiarly Elizabethan are in fact peculiarly mediaeval.

Italian stone cutters were brought to America to work of the buildings donated to the town by Standard Oil Co. executive Henry H. Rogers (1840-1909).
