  1. Today’s arrival. Time for a reread. I last read this in 1998, as part of my first Open University course, about culture in Renaissance Europe 1450-1600. #Scotland #ScottishHistory #History #Plays #Theatre #16thCentury #SixteenthCentury #Culture #Scots #ScotsLeid #ScotsScrievin #Renaissance #Europe #OpenUniversity #OU

  2. Wish my brain would stop thinking "I'll just look up another 16th/17th century testament (will and/or inventory) to study in ScotlandsPeople" when the website is still down! Hope it comes back ok after latest upgrade / revamp. And hope it's not as disastrous as some other website revamps inc SP. #HistoricalResearch #ScottishHistory #Scotland #History #Genealogy #FamilyHistory #ScotlandsPeople #website #websites #16thCentury #17thCentury #SixteenthCentury #SeventeenthCentury #Wills #Inventories

  3. A few verses from an anonymous 17th Century ballad about the fate of Lady Jane Grey.
From the Golden Garland of Princely Pleasures, 1620
    Eleanor Cramer: soprano
    Richard De Winter: tenor
    Tamsin Lewis: alto
A lamentable Ditty on the death of the Lord Guilford Dudley, and the Lady Iane Gray, that for their parents ambition, in seeking to make these two yong Princes King and Queene of England, were both beheaded in the Tower of London.
To the tune of, Peter and Parnell.

  4. Greensleeves update!
We have silk satin for the "gown..of the grossie green...sleeues of Satten hanging by" described in the song.
Ninya Mikhaila will make the gown, when we've worked out what it looks like...

  5. I’ve been given the Janet Arnold Award by the Society of Antiquaries to recreate clothing described in the Tudor song, Greensleeves.
Really excited to be working on this project with a team of superb costume historians.
Among other things, there will be a video to come in the future, and a book about Greensleeves & early modern clothing in music and song, but in the meantime, here is our recording of the words and music…

  6. Continuing to read the horrifying but page turning recent art theft book, and despairing knowing that many of the stolen artworks were eventually destroyed. Here are a couple that were stolen. I think I know already what happened ultimately to one but not sure yet re the other. Dreading to find out! #Art #ArtHistory #ArtTheft #Crime #Renaissance #RenaissanceArt #Paintings #FrenchHistory #GermanHistory #ScottishHistory #SixteenthCentury

  7. Surprised to find I had a Wiley Books order due to be delivered by DPD tonight. Only found out this evening. Then realised it was probably the latest #ScottishHistorySociety annual volume. I get surprised by this every year. And right enough, look what turned up. #ScottishHistory #Books #Bookstodon #16thCentury #SixteenthCentury #Letters #Orkney #Shetland

  8. Another day, and some more palaeographical puzzling. This time trying some very quick image manipulation ("auto color" option in GraphicConverter on my Mac) to make things easier. Could improve the colour/contrast balance even better, but this is a starting help. This image is from a 1594 Scottish testament. #ImageManipulation #Palaeography #Handwriting #ScottishHistory #16thCentury #SixteenthCentury #Histodon #Histodons #Transcription

  9. Checking the National Records of Scotland catalogue, and found this gem from 1548/9, the theft from convent of North Berwick of "the common seal of monastery and chapter as well as sone writings and discharges, to the great loss of the monastery." Not what I was seeking, but I'm intrigued to know if there was any followup. #ScottishHistory #NorthBerwick #Nuns #Crime #Theft #Monastery #Convent #16thCentury #SixteenthCentury #EastLothian #HistoricalResearch

  10. Today's video was one of the last things that we did before lockdown in March 2020... It was filmed in the Great Watching Chamber at Hampton Court Palace, while preparing a section on Elizabethan music for Historic Royal Palace's Futurelearn course on Tudor entertainment.

    Augustine Bassano: Pavan
    From Egerton MS 3665

    Robin Jeffrey: lute
    Tamsin Lewis: renaissance violin

  11. Nearing the end of one novel (Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia) and looking ahead to my next one (The Ghost Theatre by Mat Osman). Mexican Gothic is very atmospheric, and I'm enjoying it a lot. Though I will no longer read it shortly before bed at night! The other one looks like an Elizabethan delight. #books #reading #GothicHorror #Horror #HistoricalFiction #Mexico #England #SixteenthCentury #Theatre #1950s #Bookstodon #novels #Elizabethan

  12. No sugar work to report on today as the team (Robin) is distracted by the task I asked of them yesterday...make more pencils, as brushes were called in the sixteenth century!
Starting with reclaimed badger hair from shaving brushes, they'll also repurpose old squirrel hair brushes too

Currently awaiting a delivery of smaller feathers that allow for finer brushes to be constructed...should arrive in time for the weekend I hope

  13. As I was on site today, I had the opportunity to take some more images of the sugar plate plates. Though I did derail the team by asking them to start work on making some replacement brushes, so that'll stop progress for a day or so.

  14. Some progress, courtesy of team member David, of the sugar dinner service that's being made this summer in the Henry VIII kitchens at Hampton Court Palace. The recipe for the paste is from the Second Book of the Good Huswifes Jewell by Thomas Dawson, 1597.
They've made real progress in the last week or so...can't wait to see more items finished.

  15. Today is (apparently) Uncommon Instrument Awareness Day, so here are 4 images showing 16th Century Western perceptions of musicians and their instruments (some more uncommon than others) from the continents of America, Africa, Asia and Europe.
From a book showing the 8 pageants held for the Christening of Princess Elisabeth of Hesse in 1596.
    Bavarian State Library: Cod.icon. 340.
