  1. CW: Moderate pet health issues

    @kevbot716
    Hope your little guy gets well quickly!
    We had an #IVDD issue a few years back and 'cured' it with 8 weeks of cage rest.

    The main thing I learned is that rest means REST.

    There's lots of advice and experience on this site -

  2. CW: Fresh new board and card game picks!

    @kelbot I've been meaning to watch that #TomScott video about the #RoyalGameOfUr with #IrvingFinkel for literal years now xD

  4. @kelbot @redeagle OK! I've tried out a ton of audio options, and written up my experiences with them here: changelog.complete.org/archive

    Summary: I might stick with my current #LMS and #Ampache ( @ampache ) even though they're clunky in combination. Ampache with #MPD and #Mopidy was clunky in every which way. #Jellyfin with #Mopidy was close, but couldn't play my playlists in proper order. #Snapcast is great, but I'm having trouble finding a quality thing to feed it with.

  5. @kelbot @redeagle @ampache Oy, and the #Jellyfin backend for #Mopidy works instantly for the artist list, but its playlist, search, and album list are broken.

  6. @kelbot @redeagle @ampache Trying this out! The #Mopidy-Subidy plugin doesn't cache the Ampache responses, meaning that things like displaying the Playlists take forever... each time... I'm not sure this will be usable... Drat!

  7. @kelbot i get around 5+ hours on my very similar #DevTerm with A04 and only 2 cores running + wifi and #amfora/ #gomuks running. Stand by works. I already ordered a #uConsole and i will try the #RaspberryPi SoM first with it. The R01 and A04 are also on the list to try out. The R01 is very slow, hasn't better battery life in the DevTerm and isn't supported well imho

  8. CW: re: tight constraints breeding creativity

    @kelbot tight constraints is also a discussion point that keeps coming up with each iteration of the #MSXdev competition btw; just see the comments on the 2021 edition's announcement: msx.org/news/challenges/en/msx

    You have one side arguing the constraints should be as tight as possible to force contestants to focus on the gameplay and clever tricks so a game actually gets finished, and the other side who says it should also be open for later generations of #MSX, such as #MSX2, more RAM, and perhaps even audio and graphics extensions such as #OPL4 and #V9990 and also judged as such.

  9. CW: re: tight constraints breeding creativity

    @kelbot I personally wouldn't mind seeing some more #MSX2 games instead of the steady flow of #MSX1 games.

    The #MSXdev competition has done a great job at breathing back life into the first generation of the #MSX standard, at least when it comes to #games, but perhaps it's time for later revisions to be put a bit more into the spotlight instead.

    Having said that, I don't think it's the responsibility of MSXdev to organise that. If they want to keep their scope limited, I can completely understand that, especially since it would add quite a bit of complexity to the judging process.

    Instead, people are free to organise another competition, contribute to existing multi-platform ones, or just release outside of any compo.

    The MSX scene has had MSX2 or more free-form competitions in the past, usually running concurrently, and I guess that the low participation count is being attributed to MSXdev overshadowing them. Something that perhaps is not quite fair to state.

    Anyway, I welcome any event that brings some more attention to the system from my childhood, even though I don't actively use it anymore myself.

    Disclaimer:
    While I am not directly involved in MSXdev, I am somewhat part of the #MSXResourceCenter at msx.org (I edit news posts, do some moderating, take part in staff discussions, and occasionally contribute original content too), which took over organising MSXdev since this year's edition.

  10. @kelbot @bitsofbas well, there is #dsk2rom which can convert #DSK images to #ROM, but I'm not sure how well it works with #Snatcher or #SDSnatcher: msx.org/news/software/en/dsk2r

    To run DSK images on #fMSX, you'd have to use the -diska (and -diskb) argument(s): fms.komkon.org/fMSX/fMSX.html#

    Not sure how this would work on the #ODroidGO, as I have no experience with that. :)

    I'm also not sure if that version of the emulator needs the MSX (Disk) BIOS ROM files?

    Perhaps check: forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php

  11. @kelbot @redeagle This is dated now, but I had some bad experiences with mpd: changelog.complete.org/archive and changelog.complete.org/archive .

    The really nice thing about #LogitechMediaServer / #SlimServer / #SqueezeBox is that from my control app, I can control every player in the house. Turn them on/off, add them to the sync group or remove them (so they play things standalone), adjust volume, etc. Very nice, and all this can be done from an Android app, in addition to basic music selection.

  12. @kelbot What do you use for your music server? Been doing #LogitechMediaServer (thanks @CarlCravens for that recommendation years ago) and #Ampache here. LMS for streaming synced to devices in the house, Ampache for remotely.

  13. @kelbot
    #GBATemp is overall a decent resource for info, though I must admit I haven't really looked into #NDS #homebrew for quite some time.
    #DSorganize is a nice #PDA-like organiser util with a file browser (which will play audio files), todo list, calendar, day planner, address list, scribble pad, and even web browser and IRC modules, and a homebrew database.
    There are also various emulators, though IIRC the lower resolution compared to a TV, means you'll miss some lines on e.g. #SNES games.

  14. @kelbot would using a bridge system like #Bitlbee be an interim solution perhaps? Unfortunately since Bitlbee presents itself as an #IRC server, it afaik doesn't support voice/video communication though.
    Or alternatively a multi-protocol client like #Adium, #Pidgin, #Trillian? No idea if any of them still exist, but those are some I've used in the past to be present on multiple platforms while only using a single app.
    @ajroach42

  15. @kelbot I'm probably better off using the #AsciiDocs as basis, and manually convert it to a #gmi file for the couple of posts I'd feel like sharing via #Gemini.

    Oh well, for now I'll turn off the gemini server again till I have something I'm satisfied with. :)

  16. @kelbot I still need to open up my #secondHand #PS3 to clean out the dust inside. Need to order a set of security torx bits though.

    (Need to do the same for my #preOwned #XBox360 that I picked up together with the PS3 and a bunch of controllers and games for about 50 bucks a couple of months ago. It hasn't seen much use the past weeks/months, but I'm sure it will when the weather deteriorates again.)

  17. @kelbot if you like card games, I can also recommend Solitaire Royale by #GameArts for the #MSX.

    A completely different game, but perhaps also suitable for the OGO (if it can run an MSX emulator) would be The Witch's Revenge, which is a dice-roller adventure game in the style of #RuneMaster. Gameplay footage by Jorf (starts at 14:24)

  18. @kelbot I start the stream in a script at startup In a single line:
    vlc --qt-start-minimized v4l2:///dev/video0:width=720:height=480 --sout '#transcode{vcodec=theo,acodec=mpga,vb=800, ab=128}:standard{access=http,mux=ogg,dst=:8080}'

  19. CW: Video games

    @kelbot
    and those machines are a lot bulkier, and thus more expensive, to ship than a simple #PSP!
    If you do ever get one, your best bet is probably a #Yamaha #CX5MII that was (I think) designed for your local market (msx.org/wiki/Yamaha_CX5MII), though that would be just an #MSX1.
    If you'd want an #MSX2 or higher, which I'd recommend, you'd probably be best off shopping in #Japan, as their power system is closer to the #USA's, and in the case of the #turboR, the only market released.

  20. @kelbot the #TMobileG1, also known as the #HTCDream and the #EraG1, was indeed the first commercially released #Android #smartphone, and featured a clickable #trackball: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_Drea
    While I didn't have one, I do miss the slide-out screen that revealed a physical keyboard, and part out of also missed the additional buttons, and especially that they are physical ones rather than virtual.
    @djsundog @TheGibson @kemonine

  21. @kelbot
    if you're interested in trying some #MSX games (if the #ODroidGo has an MSX #emulator), I would suggest the games released as part of the #MSXdev #homebrew competitions. :)

    @bitsofbas and #Ilkke for instance released a wonderful #Quartet clone for this year's edition: msxdev.org/2019/02/13/msxdev18

  22. @kelbot using my #Xiaomi #MiA1 for size comparison (which is 155.4 x 75.8 mm) as I don't have any measuring tape handy, I think it would stick out slightly at the top, but otherwise would fit quite well.

    I doubt @mntmn's latest device will fit my limited budget, but otherwise I'd probably hop right on it. :)

  23. CW: More PSP talk

    @kelbot
    I'm curious, how well does #StarFox2 for the #SNES run on the #PSP?

  24. @kelbot
    I remember the early days of #dialupInternet for me: connecting, syncing email, opening a bunch of #forum threads (mostly on #Renderosity art site) and other sites, and submitting replies I had prepared beforehand to ones I'd opened the previous time.

  25. @kelbot
    be careful of that #choiceOverload where you end up not playing anything on it because there's too much to chose from.

  26. @kelbot perhaps use #scrobbler: github.com/hawx/mpd-scrobbler
    And once it's on last.fm or throbble, you can probably just query or scrape the info from there?
    Not sure how you can easily be notified of a song changes though, so you know when to update it.

    2. They took out #UFH control, zone valve and pump to run open (they didn’t rebalance the loops or rads however 🤨 so I have done that to the best of my ability and to learn)

    3. They fitted a 20L tank on the return only as a volumiser

    4. They set it up with #WeatherCompensation / #OutdoorReset (I’ve adjusted the curve down since however) and thermostat load compensation/modulation
