  3. hey fellow Linux nerds, I'd like some help!
    I have a Clockwork Pi uConsole and I have NixOS installed on it just fine using the nixos-uconsole repository.
    I recently realized that I want to do encryption of the root partition.
    I've set up the SD card to have an install with p1 being the /boot/firmware and p2 being the LUKS encrypted LVM (containing an ext4 partition and 8 GB swap partition).
    On trying to boot it, the built-in display and keyboard isn't working (and I tried USB keyboard but that didn't work either), so I can't unlock the partition for it to continue booting.
    What would I need to do to get those device components working?
    I think I need to somehow get some additional modules into the initramfs, but I'm not entirely sure how to do that or if that's what I actually need to do to solve this.

  7. This thing is so dumb. I love it.

    Wrote my latest blog post on it and did the html wrangling and ssh-ery necessary to get it online.

    I've done a bit of writing with it on breaks at work this week as well. Definitely nicer to use than my phone with a Bluetooth keyboard, which is how I've been doing things while away from home up to this point.

    Screen's too small for distractions. Trackball is too bad to make web browsing anything other than a chore. It can still do everything if necessary but it's only *good* for editing text (inc. code), so I can be quite productive in short bursts and then just throw it in my bag. Get my laptop out for a bit once the little guy is in bed.

  12. Thought I'd check out github.com/aethersdr/AetherSDR (#flexradio client for #linux and #macos).

    Since I'd just added a NVME drive alongside FDE to my #clockworkpi #uconsole, I installed it on there.

    Aside from the geekyness of the uConsole stuff #AetherSDR an impressively featured piece of software.

    Had an opportunity to snag it for a good price from some Czech electronics store and put CM5 from some previous project there.

    I can't really find a good use for it, though

    - The keyboard is nice
    - The gamepad is not
    - That little trackball is awful, even after flashing the keyboard with QMK
    - CM5 cannot sleep (?!)
    - So you could try hacking the kernel to boot in <1s? Go to hell, the firmware takes about 4-9s, DRAM training every time

  17. Na prática, computadores baseados em kits como o PocketTerm35 e o #uConsole enfrentam escassez generalizada de aplicativos otimizados para telas pequenas e limitações para apontamento preciso de elementos na tela.

    A única saída sem programar toneladas de programas ou tentar adaptar antigos programas, é usar software velho emulado. Eu não tenho exatamente um problema moral com isso, mas acho, no mínimo, muito irônico.

    Em 2026, temos SBCs com quantidades de memória e capacidade de processamento invejáveis, se compararmos o que existia até pouco tempo atrás. Infelizmente, não temos stack de software para fazer qualquer coisa produtiva com elegância.

    Eu fico com vontade de comprar um PT35, mas aposto que serei obrigado a passar 100% do tempo no Sway e no Foot. Como os aplicativos de modo texto para Linux possuem referências ruins (ou não possuem referências), o pináculo em termos de interface ainda é o Midnight Commander.   19. Aproveitando o último toot sobre o HandyShopper, como já comentei aqui, eu tenho um #tablet HiGole Gole2 Pro com N5095, 16 GB RAM, SSD de 256 GB e MicroSD de 128 GB. Projeto térmico digno de pena, carcaça plástica e dependente de um powerbank externo, pois felizmente não confiei no projeto dos caras.

    É uma batata quente, mas que tinha muito potencial para ser um dispositivo Linux de bolso, ainda que dependente de um powerbank.

    No lugar de rodar um emulador de #Palm javascriptado no #iOS, eu preferia ter um aplicativo nativo rodando no tablet rebelde com Silverblue. O problema é que, mesmo que um aplicativo do tipo possa ser escrito com auxílio de IA em relativamente pouco tempo (com base na minha experiência tentando clonar utilitários do #QuikMenu usando C++ e Qt com parafernália amarrada via #Nix), não tenho hardware decente.

    Eu cheguei a pensar se não daria para fazer uma carcaça com teclado e ventoinha mais parruda, mas... francamente? Acho que não compensa o esforço. É tempo e dinheiro demais para um dispositivo chinês obscuro que eu nem sei se vai sobreviver, justamente pelo projeto ruim.

    Talvez seja melhor pegar um #uConsole, mesmo com CM Lite e 4 GB de RAM.

  25. Today I finally got the last parts for my uConsole. I replaced the not-so-good WiFi antenna and the not-so-good trackball. I added an anti-glare screen protector and an expansion card with an Ethernet port. It uses a Raspberry Pi CM4 with 8 GB of RAM. The system feels faster than I expected. Maybe it can replace my laptop when traveling. The 5-inch screen is large enough to do small programming tasks, and compiling software works fast enough for me. #uConsole

  29. I’ve been attempting to get the #freedv AppImage for #flexradio running on the RPi4 I use as my Allstar Node. I couldn’t get it to decode.

    Managed to get it running on my #uconsole and received ON4LX operating on #qo100.

    Spoiler: there is a firewall on the Allstar Node.
