Forest a week after I thought it was his last day.
He recovered remarkably and looks fantastic for a 13-year old dog.
He is mostly fit again, and we both suffer a little from cabin fever as we cannot go out to the park nearby (there is a music festival on).
He appears to have a little skin problem which I am dowsing in Green Tea (Bancha*). He also gets some anti fungal tablets.
*That tea by the way is absolutely delicious

The May '26 Newsletter from the Australian Dachshund IVDD support
I highly recommend reading through their pages and/or sign up for their newsletter.
My wire-haired Forest had an episode of IVDD about 2017.
He's ok now, but I will forever be watching for signs ...https://mailchi.mp/70bf94430a0c/may26-6755377?e=a13ea90fdf

#IVDD can happen seemingly out of the blue. There can also be very subtle signs of this problem.
Forest's early signs in the last 48 hrs:
'Loss of fire'
A smaller wag than usual
Forest knowing he can't jump into the car
Pausing before the 1 step out of/into the house
Doesn't lie on his back
Not wanting to go out for a walk
Slightly odd position of neck when I slip the collar on
(Reflexes are still good, in- and output, too)

Five years ago Forest had a bad dose of IVDD, barely noticeable to me on Dec. 23rd, saw an urgent vet (sports injury specialist) on the 24th and spent the next 8 weeks with absolute cage rest.
IVDD, even when seemingly overcome, is a life long condition and requires extra caution as well as notifying any new vet of this condition.
Great tips & help/overview here:

CW: Moderate pet health issues
@kevbot716
Hope your little guy gets well quickly!
We had an #IVDD issue a few years back and 'cured' it with 8 weeks of cage rest. The main thing I learned is that rest means REST.
There's lots of advice and experience on this site -

A few hours late for #MonDog in GMT+10. Harley’s recovery continues. We pushed the first leg of our walk out to nearly 1.8km this morning, so we could go to the cafe at the far end of the main street. We’re currently resting in Lions Park in the middle of Dayboro, getting ready for the return leg.

This weekend was my sons first birthday and wife chose “Wizard of Oz” as the party theme. This meant Harley got to dress up as the cowardly lion. He escorted our guests down the yellow brick road, and then proceeded to mooch food off of them. He had a huge day and overdid it a bit with three hours of walking around. He was VERY tired that night and needed extra physio the next day. But he had a great time (my son did as well).

One of our goals for Harley’s post-op recovery was to have him join us on walks to our local coffee shop, around 1.4km from our house. His maximum range over the past year has been two laps of our street, around 800m. Last week he managed to make it to coffee with us twice. Our walks are a little slower than they used to be, and the return home seems to take forever. But we’re happy to spend the time with him and to see him doing better.

@ben I wrote a book about #dachshunds and a condition they are prone to #IVDD. How to make decisions if your dachshund develops it, and how to care for them if they are #paralyzed or #disabled by it. https://www.how2conquer.com/books/honey-have-you-squeezed-the-dachshund/ it’s also on Amazon.

Took the foster dog to physical therapy today. She can feel the acupuncture needles going in now. The vet said we probably won’t be able to do any more of that, she has gained so much sensation in her rear legs! #ivdd #dogsofmastodon
