  1. @d1 @daniel Second that. Quality and UX are way more important than features. See for how not to do it. I consider some lovely cuteness as part of UX, not an extra feature. See and @tootapp for how to do it.

  2. Ähm, Google, nein. Und wenn dein LLM mit den Suchergebnissen integriert wäre, hättest du das sprachliche Ergebnis wohl anders berechnet. Aber dem scheint nicht so.

  6. (At a later point I'm going to generate bindings for 3 using and then use to integrate libpurple into . But I never said that, because probably it will never happen.)

  11. Well, turns out to update that plugin I should update to use a current GLib and current libpurple. In order to do that I need to compile Adium anew, which means I should have a more powerful machine to run . That means I need to set up the Hackintosh. Well, that escalated quickly.

(No, I won‘t do it [now]. Element Web works fine using Firefox.)

  12. Ok, the plugin doesn’t take into account the server specified nor the proxy. It’s a very rough hack.

  13. So it seems that #MacPass needs a backport, same for #MacDown, which starts, but doesn’t open any document.
Luckily #Adium starts without any problems, it just needs a #Matrix plugin of course:

  26. NGL As an early adopter I've gone through the full hype cycle with #Beeper messaging on #Android (*ahem iMessage*) but ever since it was acquired by @photomatt it's been firing on all cylinders and has become my default #chat app on desktop and mobile. It's like a modern day #Trillian or #Adium for #RCS, #SMS, #Whatsapp, #Signal, #Messenger, and more. Keep up the great work!

  27. @letterus #adium läuft auch irgendwie nicht mehr rund ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  28. @rmondello ohhh this was a great time…. #Adium was my rescue after switching from Windows to Mac.

  29. I’m not that unhappy with #macOS, and the grass is always greener on the other side, but indie apps aren’t as vibrant an ecosystem as they were in the 2000s, so I wonder if looking into #GNOME would bring some of that joy of #Adium and #Growl and the likes back.

  30. @jhpot Nice! I was lamenting the state of #Adium the other day. And for old farts like me I'm happy to see that it's not mobile only.

  31. @miah One of the saddest parts of the modern Internet is the realization that the high-water mark of instant messaging was probably somewhere around 2005, and most of us barely noticed at the time.

Oh, Adium and Pidgin, how I miss you both (and multi-protocol IM clients more generally).

  32. Is there such a thing as #Adium that still works? I'm holding on to a Tw*tter account simply to DM people. Looking into Wire again but I believe they use Amazon servers. Which is a big no-no.

    It should be
    - #OpenSource
    - desktop
    - free
    - if possible for #macOS ánd Windows (7…)
    - not of the Amazon/Alphabet/Mega/… type
    - private & secure

  33. @grimmy @pidgin Hey, thanks for your stream! Looks fun! I‘ve been using libpurple and for years from the side of .

What‘s the editor you are using there?

  34. @chucker Don't tell anyone but some of us are still using #Adium, it is the only decent MacOS software that still supports XMPP!

  35. Things change and people move on (several #Adium devs went on to work at Apple), but I do think we’ve lost an app that

    • was native
    • was OSS
    • had people put thought into UX *and* whimsy
    • supported many protocols

It was never good at file transfers, audio/video were always mere plans for the future, and it predated the E2EE era.

But maybe some day, we can have something as good again.

  36. Seven years ago, I asked on Twitter if #Adium was still being developed, and perhaps needed a Kickstarter. (It was basically dead then.)

    Today, Twitter itself is dying.

I guess at least Adium wasn’t bought by some annoying billionaire?

  37. First the capitalist internet takes away our free tools.

Then the capitalist internet tries to sell back to us what they took away.

  38. I'd love it if an eager Objective-C veteran would fork #Adium and distort it into a #Mastodon client for macOS. I miss that icon. Get started here: github.com/adium/adium

  39. I only vaguely remember having used #Twitterrific (moved to Echofon at some point, then was on Tweetbot for a long, long time), but I knew I once made a bunch of hacks to retrofit additional features. But I didn’t quite remember when and *what*. Apparently,

    * all the way back in Jan ‘07! My account was but a few days old
    * setting the instant messenger status in #Adium, iChat, and Skype up your latest tweet after tweeting 🤯
    * various shortcuts, including a global one to show the window

  40. Now that federated services are back in, can we revive #xmpp? I want to use #Adium and have a #buddyList

  41. @kelbot would using a bridge system like #Bitlbee be an interim solution perhaps? Unfortunately since Bitlbee presents itself as an #IRC server, it afaik doesn't support voice/video communication though.
Or alternatively a multi-protocol client like #Adium, #Pidgin, #Trillian? No idea if any of them still exist, but those are some I've used in the past to be present on multiple platforms while only using a single app.
