Live and recent posts from across the Fediverse tagged #msx1, aggregated by home.social.

  1. I'm currently checking out options for doing a little coding on a #MSX1 system (real and emulated, when abroad). There's an adapted #F83 #Forth here (github.com/janaite/msx-forth83) but while it's working, it's not optimized for 40 colum mode. And on MSX1 you only have 40 columns.

Then there's a #BASIC compiler from the former, dutch "#MSX #Club #Gouda" named #Mozart which compiles your MSX BASIC code and gives you some speed improvement - it's here (download.file-hunter.com/Progr).

And, of course there's #TurboPascal3 for MSX which does support 40 column mode (run TINST.COM to set up screen). It's also here (download.file-hunter.com/Progr)

Aside from that you could use a C compiler like #SDCC or #BDSC under #MSXDOS1 ...

  2. @SuperSelena64 hmm, shame it's just #MSX1, and only #CBIOS, so no disk or cassette support yet either

  3. I think I lost my heart to #MSX #MSX1 systems ... *sigh*

  4. Yay, the MSX Pico cartridge just arrived and I immediately had to give it a try on my #HB75D - works like a charm!

Now I can finally enjoy some MSX hands on experience ... (and play #AntarcticAdventure !)

  5. Tomorrow is the sixth of May. @bitsofbas last year came up with the wonderful idea to make this day about #MSX, and call it #MaySiXth, and share our love for this wonderful #homecomputer from the #80s in whatever way you can think of.
So, if you have an #MSX1, #MSX2, #MSX2Plus, #turboR, #OneChipMSX, or similar, whether it is real or emulated, fire it up, take a photo or screenshot, and share it tomorrow with the hashtags #MaySiXth and #MSX. 💙

  6. Man, glad I finished that lousy #ZXSpectrum-based port of #SWIV for the #MSX.
Such a boring version with far lousier graphics and performance than could've been possible on #MSX1...

  7. CW: re: tight constraints breeding creativity

@kelbot I personally wouldn't mind seeing some more #MSX2 games instead of the steady flow of #MSX1 games.

The #MSXdev competition has done a great job at breathing back life into the first generation of the #MSX standard, at least when it comes to #games, but perhaps it's time for later revisions to be put a bit more into the spotlight instead.

Having said that, I don't think it's the responsibility of MSXdev to organise that. If they want to keep their scope limited, I can completely understand that, especially since it would add quite a bit of complexity to the judging process.

Instead, people are free to organise another competition, contribute to existing multi-platform ones, or just release outside of any compo.

The MSX scene has had MSX2 or more free-form competitions in the past, usually running concurrently, and I guess that the low participation count is being attributed to MSXdev overshadowing them. Something that perhaps is not quite fair to state.

Anyway, I welcome any event that brings some more attention to the system from my childhood, even though I don't actively use it anymore myself.

    Disclaimer:
While I am not directly involved in MSXdev, I am somewhat part of the #MSXResourceCenter at msx.org (I edit news posts, do some moderating, take part in staff discussions, and occasionally contribute original content too), which took over organising MSXdev since this year's edition.

  8. People complaining once again about the #MSX spec limitations of the #MSXdev competition.
So, this year I decided to suggest that those who want to compete with #MSX2, #MSX2Plus, #turboR or other #MSX configurations that don't match the #MSX1 limitations of the #compo, to participate in one of the many #demoparties out there. :)

Feel free to comment here with your suggestions for #demoscene events that welcome #MSX in their specific compos or #WILDCompos. :)

  9. Did a bit of a #ToolAssistedSpeedrun challenge to myself today.
I wanted to see if I could defeat the series of 10 minibosses and its follow-up regular boss in #Nemesis2 on the #MSX, using the buggy 'Fire Blaster' weapon (which seems to do no damage at all), and the napalm missiles.
You have to destroy them before they go off-screen, or else their core shield gets restored.

  10. Hah, that's neat!
    #ThomasGlufke made an #Instagram client for the #8bit #homeComputer #MSX:

It's even compatible with the very first version of MSX, #MSX1!
(Of course you do need an HTTP capable network cartridge such as #Gr8net for it though.)

  11. An interesting introduction to the #MSX platform that covers the #MSX1, #MSX2, #MSX2Plus and #MSXTurboR: youtube.com/watch?v=AFRf87SqWr
It's refreshing to see one of these videos covering this #80s #8bit #homeComputer platform for which I have quite some #nostalgia, and not just focus on the crappy #ZXSpectrum ports and games without smooth scrolling, and instead highlights the high quality releases, excellent #homebrew, hardware extensions and even patches that add #smoothScrolling to existing #games.

  12. For #demoSunday lemme share this #dvik & #joyrex #MSX1 #demo: #MSX Unleashed

    According to #DanielVik's video description:
«This is dvik&joyrex first MSX1 #megaDemo production and revolutionised the MSX #demoscene with effects such as 105 color images, border scrollers and copper bars, all unseen on the MSX1 demo scene. Recorded in #blueMSX
