I've moved to arcade fidelity graphics, which look absolutely awsome on the Commander X16!

Batocera – The Retro Arcade OS
I have a mini-PC that my workplace isn't using so I grabbed it and brought it home. With this home labbing I have been getting into I thought about having a retro video game box. Most people get a Raspberry Pi and install RetroPie on it. The limitations is the micro SD card that the RPi boots off of. I have a mini-PC that uses an M.2 SSD drive to boot the OS off it. So I chose that to host my retro video game box. It only has a 250 GB SSD so I ordered a 512 GB SSD. As for the OS I […]https://radicalgeek.blog/2026/05/16/batocera-the-retro-arcade-os/

"We Need a Little Christmas" is a very popular #ChristmasSong originating from #JerryHerman's Broadway musical #Mame, and first performed by #AngelaLansbury in that 1966 production. In the musical, the song is performed after Mame has lost her fortune in the #WallStreetCrashOf1929, and decides that she, her young nephew Patrick, and her two household servants "need a little Christmas now" to cheer them up.

I've encountered something very weird---
A few years ago I played around with the settings in #Cadash in #MAME, I think it was the DIP switches, and I managed to unlock an entire alternate opening area.
I literally PLAYED this. At least one version of Cadash contains a complete different first level. It largely contains the obstacles from the normal first level, but they're in a different order. This alternate map connects with the normal first level at the first boss room, and from there the rest of the game continues normally.
I know it's there! I saw it! But now I can't figure out how I unlocked it in MAME! And I can't find anyone else on the internet who's discovered this.

To follow up on my #Cadash post--
In the way of these official compilations, #ArcadeArchives they only offer a couple of versions, when there's five in #MAME, and that's just counting the Japanese and US versions.
Of the variations on offer in Arcade Archives a Japan and a US one, the US version is much easier. Herbs only cost 20G each, and you can carry 8 (the Japanese version presented they cost 10x more), in the US version inn prices ramp up more slowly so you can probably afford an extra stay, and the secret "Amulet of Dragon" item which gives you a ton of gold, instead of being worth 10,000G, maxes you out at 60,000G!
The cheaper herbs and greater capacity for them can be very useful in the first half of the game. I don't remember all the MAME versions using these rules though, I think there might be a Japanese one with the cheaper, or a US one with more expensive prices.

Finally got my kickstarted barebone #Commodore #64X Mini-ITX computer case, and it looks really, really great!
Already got a beautiful #C64C case containing an excellent #Ultimate64Elite, so this won't be a #C64 emulator, but I might stuff it with enough hardware to run #Amiga, #MAME / #DREAMM & #Nintendo stuff.

Ah! #Cadash, a great sidescrolling #arcade (literally) #RPG, is on #ArcadeArchives! But sadly it maxes out at two players: it doesn't support the arcade game's linked cabinet mode, which allowed four players to play at once. (No one, to my knowledge, does, certainly not #MAME. The only way I know to experience that mode is with two networked arcade units.)
