  4. TRAVERSING CULTURAL LANDSCAPES THROUGH THE LIBRARIES

If you’re looking for an affordable way to explore in Waterloo Region this winter, look no farther than your local library. With diverse community programs at a variety of branch locations, there are plenty of opportunities to learn and meet new people. Each of the listed events below are free to attend, open to anyone and require advance registration.

The Region of Waterloo Library serves the residents of Wellesley, Woolwich, North Dumfries, and Wilmot with 12 branches. Below are five cultural events to add to your calendar.

Celebrate Black History Month with three short films centering Black stories and history from the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), followed by a community discussion on Wednesday, Feb. 25 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Register for the Ayr Branch event online. Afterwards, learn about Waterloo Region’s connection to the Underground Railroad by reading about Buxton, Ontario.

Did you know that chess, formerly known as chaturanga, originated in India during the Gupta Empire in 600 CE? The strategic game’s playing pieces resembled components of the military and the game traversed the world through trading routes. Join a game every Tuesday and Saturday at the New Hamburg Branch and every Wednesday at the Baden Branch from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Hygge—pronounced “hoo-gah”—is perhaps one of Denmark’s most identifiable cultural exports. It is the notion of coziness and encompasses everything from the glow of a candle to spending time with good people. Head to the Breslau Branch on Tuesday, Feb. 10 for a night of Winter Hygge from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for ages 9 and up. Enjoy hot beverages, crafts and puzzles and good company.

Embracing winter weather is a feat for some and a joy for others. Cambridge resident and globally published freelance journalist Paul Gains will share his love of the Arctic’s snowy owls during a presentation at the Ayr Branch on Wednesday, Feb. 18 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Escape the cold and slip into a sunny state of mind without hopping on a plane. Chef Arielle is teaching a Roti and Trini Curry Masterclass at the Wilmot Recreation Complex on Tuesday, Feb. 24 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for ages nine and up.

The Cambridge Public Library (CPL), Waterloo Public Library (WPL) and Kitchener Public Library (KPL) offer a wide range of tools to rent out, some of which will help support your Waterloo Region (and beyond!) explorations. Visit their websites or branches in-person to borrow skates, snowshoes, trekking poles, wildlife kits, museum passes, or Grand River and Ontario Parks passes.

Learning a language is a phenomenal way to travel deeper. Start at home with free language classes, French reading buddies, or language circles in French, Chinese, Spanish and English at CPL, WPL and KPL branches.

Finally, if you’re looking for an activity that’s engaging for the whole family, the WPL is hosting The Great Family Geocache Challenge. Geocaching is an adventurous hobby where participants search for hidden objects based on other participants’ clues. It’s an excellent way to get outside, exercise your brain, and enjoy a new and free activity at home or elsewhere around the world.

    Happy exploring!

AUGUSTA, Maine — "Summer has arrived in Maine, bringing rising temperatures and longer days. But when the heat becomes dangerous or oppressive, community cooling centers help support those who need an escape from the heat and humidity.

"The centers are often located in public spaces, such as recreation centers or libraries. They typically open for short-term purposes.

"While the primary purpose is to save lives by getting people out of potentially dangerous heat conditions, cooling centers may also provide charging stations, showers, or food.

"The latest listings for cooling centers are on the Maine Emergency Management Agency's [#MEMA] website. We've included a roundup here as well as additional resources to help you stay safe this summer when temperatures rise.

    What are the risks?

"According to the Maine Emergency Management Agency, heat-related illnesses in the state more often occur when temperatures reach the mid-80s or higher.

“Heat-related illnesses, like heat exhaustion or heat stroke, happen when the body is not able to properly cool itself,” according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “While the body normally cools itself by sweating, during extreme heat, this might not be enough. In these cases, a person's body temperature rises faster "

Come Celebrate Earth Day in Saco!

    April 24 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

    "Registration is NOW OPEN!

Each year, the Saco Parks & Recreation Department offers an opportunity to bring the community together to clean up and prepare the local green spaces and parks for spring and summer! It is now more important than ever to focus on our green space, clean energy, eliminating waste, and becoming an eco-friendly community.

"#ecomaine is proud to be part of this year’s celebration! Stop by our table at the #SacoCommunityCenter at the start of the day to pick up #recycling resources, meet our education team, and learn about the sustainable waste programs available to Saco residents. At the end of the cleanup, we’ll be weighing the trash collected from parks, trails, and open spaces across the city so volunteers can see the real impact their community made together.

"Looking to get involved? Join your neighbors to volunteer in Saco and help clean up and prepare local parks for spring and summer. Duties include #TrashPickUp, #weeding, #mulching, raking, and more. This event is (light) rain or shine!

From NC’s Weather Authority: 🌊 Coastal Flooding/Wind: I know all anyone wants to know about is snow, but we do have real concerns about the Coastal Flooding. I have a good following on the Outer Banks, and on top of the snow risk, there is potential for moderate to significant Coastal Flooding Saturday into Monday, especially during High Tides. Highway 12 south of Oregon Inlet could become impassable at times this weekend. Coastal Flooding is also likely in the downeast Carteret County. Minor to Moderate Soundside Flooding is also possible.

📌2-4FT is Coastal Flooding is possible in areas, especially South of Oregon Inlet on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands. There will be some ocean overwash, especially in the prone areas of Ocracoke, Hatteras, Buxton, Avon, Rodanthe, Waves, Pea Island, and Oregon Inlet. There will be times when Highway 12 could flood during high tide on Pea Island, Buxton, and the North end of Ocracoke, making it impassable at times Saturday through Monday during high tides. 2-4FT is also possible in the Downeast Carteret Communities.

📌There will be some minor 1-3FT coastal flooding along the southern Pamlico Sound, Core Sound, Neuse/Bay Rivers, and
    Pamlico/Pungo Rvrs Saturday- Sunday AM.

💨: Wind Gusts will be strong on the Outer Banks thanks to being closer to the low, so 45-65MPH wind gusts are possible Saturday-Monday mainly. Loose outdoor objects (trash bins, signs, furniture, flags,) can become airborne and cause minor damage. High-profile vehicles (box trucks, RVs, trailers) can be difficult to control on bridges. There could be some scattered power outages from this. Blowing snow is also possible when snow is falling. Gusty winds of 25-40 are up in the mountains, 40-55MPH, isolated power outages are possible but not widespread.

😎The Bottom Line: For our Outer Banks folks, please prepare for moderate to significant coastal flooding (2-4 ft) from Saturday into Monday, especially south of Oregon Inlet, where ocean overwash could make Highway 12 impassable during high tides. We also expect high wind gusts of 45-65 MPH, which will create hazardous driving conditions and could cause scattered power outages along the coast, as well as very high surf and beach erosion. Soundside flooding of 1-3 ft is also possible for the Pamlico and Neuse basins, so residents should secure loose outdoor objects immediately. If you are on Hatteras or Ocracoke, plan for the possibility of being cut off by water during the high tide cycles this weekend. A Coastal Flood Warning in effect for most of the Outer Banks now.
