  1. Pesticide exposure at work may increase motor neurone disease risk – new study

"A new study, published today, has found that being exposed to pesticide at work can increase the risk of developing ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) by 61–71%. The study brings together the findings of eight other studies – but not all of them assess risk in the same way. Here’s why we need to interpret the findings with caution....Overall, the study supports the case that being exposed to pesticide at work increases your risk of developing ALS." >>

  5. A part of today's work: pulling ragwort from a field for my parents.

Ragwort is quite a pretty yellow flower and a good nectar source, but it can unfortunately do severe liver damage to animals if much is eaten - it's especially dangerous if it gets into hay batches - so we try to keep the quantity of it in the field under control. Hand weeding is arduous but getting the roots out pays off in the long run.

  6. After the rains, #SunshineSadie and I went for our evening stroll and watched a guy #weeding a perfect circle around the base of the trees on his property with a #flamethrower. He said it's the most fun he's ever had weeding.

  10. The most fiddle-y weeding job for me is doing the row of onions. My favorite tool for this job is this long-handled stiff wire weeder. The designer really knew what they were doing. It's great at really close work around tender crops. And, no, this is not a paid endorsement. I just really appreciate a tool that works!

  17. #SacoME #EarthDay #Cleanup

Come Celebrate Earth Day in Saco!

    April 24 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

    "Registration is NOW OPEN!

Each year, the Saco Parks & Recreation Department offers an opportunity to bring the community together to clean up and prepare the local green spaces and parks for spring and summer! It is now more important than ever to focus on our green space, clean energy, eliminating waste, and becoming an eco-friendly community.

"#ecomaine is proud to be part of this year’s celebration! Stop by our table at the #SacoCommunityCenter at the start of the day to pick up #recycling resources, meet our education team, and learn about the sustainable waste programs available to Saco residents. At the end of the cleanup, we’ll be weighing the trash collected from parks, trails, and open spaces across the city so volunteers can see the real impact their community made together.

"Looking to get involved? Join your neighbors to volunteer in Saco and help clean up and prepare local parks for spring and summer. Duties include #TrashPickUp, #weeding, #mulching, raking, and more. This event is (light) rain or shine!

    Schedule of Events:

    When: Friday, April 24th, 2026
Where: Our very own Saco parks, schools, trails, and open spaces!
    Time: 9:00am-1:00pm
Please meet at the Saco Community Center at 9:00am to check-in. Everyone who registers by the T-shirt deadline will pick up their shirts.
We will also have coffee and refreshments for everyone so that we can fuel up before we go!
Volunteers will disperse to your locations after we take a group photo!
    Fee: FREE but must pre-register!
Ages: Volunteers under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

    Earth Day Location Options:

Please only sign up for one location.

  19. Dug a new weed pit at my allotment this morning. The victims spend a week or so drying out, then get buried. I've been doing this for years and the soil is slowly getting better. #allotment #gardening #weeds #weeding #composting #soil

  20. In case it might help somebody else, I managed to fix my EGO weed trimmer today. The automatic feed button wasn't sucking in the line, so I used a 1/2 socket to pop off the housing and found a piece of string and some dried stems clogging the gears. Once cleaned the auto-feed worked better than ever and the trimmer had much more power. #ego #yardwork #repair #fix #fixit #diy #tools #weeding #battery #lawncare
