    Born to Lithuanian Jewish parents in New York City, Gertrude Elion was a pioneer in the area of biomedical research and her work changed the way drugs are developed, from trial and error to targeted understanding. He r work was directly involved in the development of the first anti-viral AIDS drug (AZT), in assisted organ transplants through immunosuppression of rejection, as well as anti-Herpes drugs.

    Dr. Elion's work saved countless lives around the world and she was recognized with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1988.
