Robert Wise's The Haunting (1963) is an object lesson in how to do subtle horror and it's one of the great haunted house movies. Superbly atmospheric and ambiguous. Much better than Shirley Jackson's overrated source novel.

Viy is a 1967 Soviet gothic horror film based on a Gogol story. A girl's corpse doesn't want to stay dead. Wildly imaginative, crazy, perfectly captures the feel of folk legends and fairy tales. Creepy, spooky, with inspired fantastic imagery.
