  1. Galloping Goose Water Tank
    Trout Lake, Colorado

Located on the Rio Grande Southern Railroad route from Dolores to Telluride, this water tank served the steam locomotives that originally ran on this narrow gauge railroad.

The expensive to run locomotives were replaced by lightweight "motors" built from automotive bodies for mail runs. These motors were nicknamed Galloping Geese.

  4. Snow Geese Grazing
    Bosque del Apache NWR, NM

Expand the video for best experience!

A short video from the north end of the pool of yesterday's photo. Here the geese were close to the road and not at all concerned with the cars and photographers stopped to observe.

A Sandhill Crane can be seen walking behind the geese and the tiny dark speck to the left of the crane is a coyote. A few geese are circling overhead.

[This is my 1st time to post a video, so let me know of any issues.]

  5. Snow Geese
    Bosque del Apache NWR, NM

Spent most of yesterday down at the refuge and saw many hundreds of these geese (if not thousands.) Photo from 2020.

Absolutely a gorgeous winter's day in central NM. Not a cloud in the sky; no wind. Beautiful views of birds, pools, fields, and surrounding low mountains. Shirtsleeve temperatures by early afternoon.

Haven't looked at my photos, yet, but suspect I have some nice ones to share in the coming days.

  6. Morning at the Crane Pools
    Bosque del Apache NWR, NM

Over two dozen Sandhill Cranes are standing in the icy pool—they spend the night there as protection against predators, such as coyote. Around them are many, many Snow Geese who also spent the night here. Very soon all will take to the sky to head off to forage in the neighboring fields.

Only a small section of the much larger pool is shown in the photo. There are many more cranes and geese in the pool, and there are additional pools in the refuge, too.

  7. Rio Grande Bosque
    Albuquerque Open Space, NM

A week ago the bosque was pretty much all green. Yesterday it was bursting with color. It hasn't gotten down to freezing yet this year, so must be the shorter days that trigger the change.

The Four-wing Saltbushes are full of mature seeds, too.

  8. Maroon Bells
    Aspen, Colorado

Much like Half Dome in Yosemite, everyone takes a picture of Maroon Bells reflecting in the lake below. I camped there so was able to capture this morning image with no wind to break up the lake's mirror surface—add a little snow and a few fall aspen and I think I hit the jackpot.

  9. The 24" Clark Telescope
    Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff, AZ

Of the many telescopes found on Lowell Observatory’s central Flagstaff campus, the most prolific and recognizable is the Clark Refractor.... In the observatory’s earliest days, Percival Lowell himself used the Clark to study the surface of Mars, searching for signs of intelligent life. His theories on the subject fostered massive public interest in astronomy and sparked the imaginations of science fiction writers for generations to come. Nearly a century later, the Clark would be used by a team of scientists and artists to create painstakingly detailed maps of the Moon’s surface for use on the Apollo moon mission.

  11. Dusting of snow last night = 0.04" liquid precipitation. Light snow now and temperature 31ºF. Alameda/North Valley #NMwx #ABQwx

  12. An update for those who liked my precipitation report yesterday:

0.41" in the gauge this morning! Twice the forecast amount, bringing the thirsty yard total up over half an inch for that front!

  13. @BramMeehan @trabern @davepolaschek Hang in there Santa Fe. The average wind speed has dropped 14mph now that the squall line has passed and I'm not hearing any major gusts (knock on wood). Most of the white in the yard is styrofoam, single-use bags, and junk mail, not snow LOL #ABQwx

  14. Oh, oh. Those high winds that they have been predicting just blew in. #abqwx

  15. Visit to Avalon Bay
    Santa Catalina Island, CA

Living in central New Mexico and with my travels centering around the Four Corner States, I don't have much opportunity to photograph ships for Ship Saturday. But I do have friends with an amazing view from their balcony.

  16. Snow Geese on Ice
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, NM

In honor of the Winter Solstice and Throwback Thursday I dug out one of my earliest photos from the refuge. Taken in December 2009 through a spotting scope of geese standing on a frozen pond. I reprocessed it this morning, mostly to increase the size for your viewing pleasure 😎

  18. Bosque Bike Trail - This Afternoon
    Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, NM

Got out on my bike after the weather disturbance that dropped snow on Santa Fe and brought strong winds here. Riding north I saw the Sandia Mountains with clouds above and it occurred to me to take a photo to share with you. If I'd been a little smarter I would have included my bike in the foreground.

The trail runs along the top of the levee with the Rio Grande and the bosque on the left.

  19. Moon House Ruins
Cedar Mesa, Bears Ears National Monument UT

Continuing with my theme of ancient puebloan ruins for #ThrowbackThursday. Moon House is the most unique and best preserved of the ruins I've visited in SE Utah. It is halfway up a steep cliff in a narrow sandstone canyon.

The photo looks down a narrow common room. The wall on the right is on the outside. The back wall of the rooms on the left is the cliff itself. There are other structures on the ledge not pictured here.

The ruins are reachable via moderately strenuous trail; 3.2 miles roundtrip; after a very bumpy drive in a high clearance vehicle. PERMIT REQUITED from blm.gov/visit/kane-gulch-range

  20. Atsinna Ruins
    El Morro National Monument, NM

A scenic walk up a narrow trail to butte of Inscription Rock leads to these ruins. The trail then loops back to the visitor center. Not to be missed if you visit the monument.

  21. White House Ruins
Canyon de Chelly National Monument, AZ
    [VERTICAL PHOTO]

Sitting at the bottom of a towering, sheer sandstone wall which forms a side of the canyon, this ancient puebloan structure shares its environment with Navajo who live in the canyon to this day, growing crops, and raising horses.

(For those who don't know: "Chelly" is pronounced 'shay' which rhymes with gray.)

  22. American Rubyspot - female
    Albuquerque Open Space, NM

Thought I'd follow up on yesterday's post of the bright red male with this lovely female of the species and her subtile beauty. This is a prettier photo, as well, IMHO.

  23. @smellsofbikes Yes, and I couldn't even leave my dead-end street in an NEV by law. I'd need an EV that could go at least 45 and preferably 55mph. Don't need faster. 80mi range or at least 60mi. 2 people max would work for me, but maybe not most. #OffTheCuff

  24. anTenna Tuesday
    Sandia Crest east of Albuquerque
    [vertical photo]

The highest portion of the Sandia Mountains bordering the city is not a peak, but a ridge line that is known locally as The Crest. Near the northern end is a forest of TV, FM radio, and microwave antennas.

Our original TV stations, back in the 1950s, were able to provide strong signals to the Albuquerque and surrounding areas negating the need for CATV for many years. On a clear day you can see them from anywhere in the city.

  25. Fitzgerald Marine Reserve
    Montara, CA

A fantastic area of tide pools offering a view of diverse marine plants and animals—a treasure. Not too far south from San Francisco and the San Andreas Fault.

Two figures can be seen out on the rock looking at the tide pools.

  26. CW: Coffee

@erikavaris The lesson: Never, never run out of one's preferred bean.

I keep my soon to be consumed beans in one of those glass containers with a rubber gasket. When I decant the last of the purchased product into the jar I still have plenty of time to get to the supplier as it holds about a week's worth.

  27. El Santuario de Chimayó
    Historic Church and Pilgrimage site

The massive adobe chapel was built in 1816 in this small town in northern NM. Each year some 300,000 people from all over the world make pilgrimages during Holy Week.
