I had been trying to find the right time to head to California’s Central Valley to photograph migratory birds again. I was last there around New Year’s Day, but since then various things have kept me away — mostly that the times I ‘ve been free were the times when my favorite foggy conditions were not in place. I finally gave up on waiting and went on a sunny day. There is a small population of Sandhill #Cranes native to central and south #Florida.
They do not migrate to the sandy dunes in Nebraska, but instead live in Florida year round, breeding and raising their young here as well as spending the winter.

Morning at the Crane Pools
Bosque del Apache NWR, NM

Over two dozen Sandhill Cranes are standing in the icy pool—they spend the night there as protection against predators, such as coyote. Around them are many, many Snow Geese who also spent the night here. Very soon all will take to the sky to head off to forage in the neighboring fields.

Only a small section of the much larger pool is shown in the photo. There are many more cranes and geese in the pool, and there are additional pools in the refuge, too.

A subspecies of Sandhill Cranes are native to #Florida, and live in the area year-round.
#Cranes lay one or two eggs each season, and both parents raise the young cranes until it is time for them to lay eggs again.
Immature cranes have sparse, light brown feathers.
Cranes eat berries and fruit, as well as insects, small reptiles and lizards, and small fish and crustaceans, depending on what’s available.
