The High Trestle Bridge is an Iowan rails to Trails project completed in 2011. The bridge is one of the highlights of the High Trestle Trail in central Iowa.
The bridge is 130 feet above the Des Moines River spanning a spectacular valley with incredibly beautiful views on both sides.
The walk to the bridge was hot, but the bikers were out in force.

It feels awesome and looks awesome. The Enve inner drive free hub is loud, and I swapped the 60 teeth ratchet to 90 teeth, which makes higher pitch noise. I still need to get used to it, but good thing is that runners and pedestrians can hear me approaching 🤪 if they're not wearing headphones...

I had a nice #ebike ride today with a surprise along the way. There were loads of animals out, bobcat, 3 different great blue heron, egrets, squirrels, and a surprise.
There was a dazed possum in the grass. Not sure what the issue was, they are nocturnal by nature.

What a great day out!
I slept super well after a long day with Steven including a long drive to get to Mahone Bay on the South Shore, and another long bike ride to Western Shore, a community on the South shore (yes, really), then drive home. Didn't want to get up this morning ha ha!
I was really glad that I took the time to plan and make some great avocado hummus veggie wraps, fruit etc for lunch, as we ate on a bench on the edge of a lovely quiet lake, Commons Lake. It was so peaceful. We only saw one person who was running the trail, and one beautiful deer who crossed out path.

There are a few areas in Illinois with some steep terrain. In particular the Northwest corner which covers the southern end of The Driftless Area and the southern part of the state where the Ohio and Mississippi River meet. However in the flatter parts when you put your bike trail through a significant glacial moraine it's good that you give people warning about what they're going to encounter. #illinois #geography #bike #biketrail #hill #mchenrycounty

Today's cycle ride was cut shorter than we had planned when we found the track blocked. I guess it's being worked on. So we had lunch and turned back. Total 28kThe funniest part of the ride was when we each got our cameras out at a pretty spot and I couldn't work out why my camera wasn't working as expected. I couldn't focus it, the settings had all changed... And then @StevenKennard said he was having trouble with his... And we don't even have the same model! All sorted (we had picked up each other's cameras... duh) photos to come, (maybe).
This is 14km of the St. Margaret's Bay Trail from Bike to Bean heading away from Halifax. A nice ride otherwise, a well maintained Rails to Trails surface. Apparently it's also being worked in in the opposite direction.

"It was a happy day for Doug Lewis, Painesville’s city manager. He and his colleagues have been considering how to close the city-owned power plant and replace it with a cleaner alternative. They also have wanted to redevelop the site of a long-shuttered #chemical factory near the shores of Lake Erie.
"The federal government will now pay about $80 million to install solar and batteries on the former factory land and to beautify the rest of the brownfield by planting a #meadow of #wildflowers and constructing a #BikeTrail. The trail will provide a connection between Painesville and a regional trail that runs along the lake.

"The solar farm will have capacity of 35 megawatts and the battery storage system will have capacity of 10 megawatts. It will be capable of running for three hours at that level before recharging.
"The new construction will be on land that once was home to the Diamond Shamrock Corp. chemical plant, which operated there from 1912 to 1977 and occupied about 1,100 acres. The plant’s products included baking soda, chromium compounds, and hydrochloric and sulfuric acids.
"Since the site closed, the community and the federal government have gone through the slow and trying process of removing #pollutants to make it site safe for redevelopment.
The current project can serve as a case study for many things, including regional cooperation.
