    - A stronger cold front crosses the waters Monday night into Tuesday with Small Craft Advisories possible.

1030mb high pressure is centered from ME to Atlantic Canada early this morning. Meanwhile, a stationary front lingers in vicinity of the SC and southern NC coast. The pressure gradient on the southern flank of the high has resulted in a 15-20kt E wind off the MD, DE, and NJ coasts, which as resulted in seas ranging from 3-4ft S to ~4ft N in the coastal waters and likely ~5ft in the offshore waters N of Parramore Island. Waves in the Ches. Bay are ~2ft. Weak low pressure develops along the stationary front today and pushes off the Outer Banks tonight. The wind will be light today, generally shifting from E/SE the first part of the day, to W/NW by later this aftn. A push of drier air arrives late tonight into Monday with a NNW wind increasing to 10-15kt over the Ches. Bay and ocean, and 8- 12kt elsewhere. Seas gradually subside tonight, and will primarily be 2-3ft by tonight and Monday. Waves in the Ches. Bay are expected to be 1-2ft today into tonight, and 2-3ft by Monday.

A stronger cold front is progged to cross the coast later Monday followed by a CAA surge Monday night into Tuesday. 04/00z models have continued to show a weaker trend with this post-frontal surge. Local wind probs for sustained 18kt are now 50% or less over the Ches. Bay Monday evening, and these values diminish late Monday night into Tuesday morning. Regardless, there will still likely be a period with a 15-20kt N/NNE wind for the Ches. Bay, lower James, and Currituck Sound given the cooler/drier air over warm water. Additionally, a N/NNE wind should increase to ~20kt over the southern coastal waters Monday night, with 4-5ft seas by later Monday night into early Tuesday. Wind/seas fall short of SCA criteria based on the 00z guidance. High pressure builds across the coast later Tuesday/Tuesday night and lingers through Thursday. A weaker cold front crosses the coast Thursday night, with high pressure returning Friday. Sub-SCA conditions are expected to prevail later Tuesday through the end of the week.

A Moderate Rip Risk continues for the northern beaches today and all beaches on Monday. A Moderate (or potentially high) Rip Risk is forecast for the southern beaches on Tuesday.

    - Small Craft Advisories are in effect for the Chesapeake Bay and lower James River today.

    - A stronger cold front crosses the waters early next week, and likely brings additional Small Craft Advisories for a majority of the local waters.

A cold front is pushing S along the Mid-Atlantic coast early this morning. The wind is shifting to N across the northern tier of the marine area, and observations immediately N of the local waters are showing a N wind increasing to 15-20kt with gusts to ~25kt. Farther S, the wind remains light and is generally WSW 5-10kt. Seas are 2- 3ft with 1-2ft waves in the Ches. Bay. The cold front will continue to push S along the coast early this morning with a shallow CAA surge developing in the wake of the front. A N wind of 15-20kt with gusts approaching 25kt is expected to develop across the Ches. Bay and lower James River where SCAs are in effect today (waves build to 2-4ft). Similar wind speeds are expected for the coastal waters. However, 25kt local gust probs are 30-40% or less and 25kt sustained wind probs are negligible. Seas are expected to build to 3-4ft today in the coastal waters as the wind shifts to N-NNE, and up to 4-5ft in the offshore waters. Overall, conditions are expected to be near, but just shy of SCA criteria for the coastal waters. Elsewhere, a N wind of 10-15kt with gusts up to 20kt is expected for the upper rivers and Currituck Sound. As the day progresses the wind direction should trend to NNE then NE by later this aftn. The wind becomes easterly tonight as 1030mb high pressure builds across New England, and will be locally stronger N of Chincoteague. This could potentially push some 5ft seas from the offshore waters into the northern coastal waters.

Sub-SCA conditions return later this aftn and evening (aside from some elevated seas in the northern coastal waters), and continue through Monday. A stronger cold front is progged to cross the coast later Monday followed by a stronger CAA surge Monday night into Tuesday. SCAs are likely for most of the marine area with a NNE wind of 20-25kt gusting to near 30kt. Seas are forecast to build to 4-6ft N to 5-7ft S.

A Moderate Rip Risk is expected at all area beaches today. A Moderate Rip Risk continues for the northern beaches with a Low Risk for the southern beaches on Sunday.

    WHAT HAS CHANGED

    - PoPs and QPF trended downward today, but still a rainy day for most. - Updated Aviation discussion for 06z TAFs.

    KEY MESSAGES

    1) Cool and wet weather continues today. Gradually drying out tonight.

    2) Seasonable temperatures and dry for the upcoming work week.

    DISCUSSION

As of 330 AM EDT Sunday...

KEY MESSAGE 1...Cool and wet weather continues today. Gradually drying out tonight.

A frontal boundary is situated well S of the area this morning. A CAD airmass is in place with high pressure over New England. Locally, it`s a moist and (relatively) cool early morning. The coverage of rain has been lower than expected, perhaps owing to earlier convective activity well to our S. There is a batch of light- moderate rain currently moving through the Eastern Shore with drizzle or very light rain elsewhere.

Given observational and modeling trends, the coverage of rain later today also will probably be less than originally anticipated. A wave of low pressure will ride along the frontal boundary later this morning/early afternoon and do expect more widespread rain to develop across SE VA and especially NE NC during this time. CAMs also highlight another batch potentially moving through the Piedmont as well. With the lower coverage and intensity of the rain, QPF has also trended lower and additional totals today will be generally be in the 0.10-0.25" range, except 0.25-0.5" for far SE VA and NE NC. The coolest temps, mid to upper 60s, will be well inland today (in the core of the CAD airmass), with lower 70s near the coast. Rain tapers off by late this afternoon and evening as drier air begins to move in behind another cold front, though low-end PoPs remain in place across the SE through early tonight. Clouds will be slow to clear and mostly cloudy skies persist tonight, with low temperatures ranging from the mid-upper 50s W of I-95 and lower-mid 60s E of I-95.

KEY MESSAGE 2...Seasonable temperatures and dry for the upcoming work week.

Cold advection will initially lag behind the secondary front on Monday. So, temps will actually be warmer than this weekend for most locations as the sun makes a reappearance. Highs should be in the 70s for all of our CWA, warmest W of the Chesapeake Bay. The more pronounced cooler and drier air arrives Monday evening into Monday night as ~1025 mb high pressure builds down toward the Mid-Atlantic from the Great Lakes region. Markedly cooler Monday night as lows dip into the 50s for SE VA/NE NC, with mid to upper 40s elsewhere. The cooler/dry theme continues into the midweek period as the high pressure system builds overhead. Tuesday should feel most like fall with highs struggling to reach 70 F. Similarly, Tuesday`s overnight lows will also be the coolest of the week. The current forecast has 40s for most of the area, though a light onshore wind near the coast likely keeps these areas in the 50s. Should also note that some upper 30s are not out of the realm of possibility, especially for rural and typically cooler locations in the Piedmont….

    WHAT HAS CHANGED

    - Updated full discussion with little to no significant forecast changes

    KEY MESSAGES

    1) An unsettled weather pattern with cooler and wetter conditions is expected this weekend.

    2) Seasonable temperatures and dry next week.

    DISCUSSION

As of 330 AM EDT Saturday...

KEY MESSAGE 1...An unsettled weather pattern with cooler and wetter conditions is expected this weekend.

A cold front is currently dropping south through the forecast area this morning. Winds have shifted to the north behind the front and areas in southern VA and NE NC will see a similar wind shift as the front moves through over the next couple of hours. There are a few showers well behind the front over the Northern Neck and Eastern Shore, but coverage is quite low due to relatively absent forcing aloft. There is a larger batch of rain riding ENE along the I-81 and I-95 corridors N of our CWA. Expect this precip to gradually drop into our area later this morning and afternoon, with the highest coverage generally N of a Farmville- Petersburg- Melfa line. There is a good chance areas in southern VA and NE NC stay mostly dry today. Temperatures today will be a far cry from yesterday and may struggle to increase this afternoon due to modest cool advection and the clouds/precip. Highs range from the low-mid 60s N to lower-mid 70s S.

A second cold front will approach the area Sunday. Tropical moisture streaming up between the fronts will bring additional rain to the area late Sat night through Sunday. The initial batch of widespread precip likely moves in from the SW after midnight Saturday into early Sunday morning, with categorical (80%) PoPs spreading E/NE through the day Sunday. Precip will gradually clear from NW to SE, first across the W/NW Sunday afternoon and then for the E/SE by Sunday night. The QPF forecast remains a bit tricky, with some emerging discrepancies between the hi-res CAMs and the global models and ensembles. For example, the HRRR and NAMNest both have a minima in QPF across SE VA and NE NC, whereas the EPS, GEFS, and NBM continue to depict the highest totals in these areas. At this point, the QPF forecast shows a bifurcation with an area of higher totals from the nrn Piedmont into the Northern Neck and another area in far SE VA and NE NC. Totals up to 1.5" are generally possible, with locally higher aomunts in the above-mentioned areas. Regardless, there are likely to be some areas that don`t see much rain owing to difficult-to-predict mesoscale features. The chance for thunderstorms remains quite low due to cool sfc temps, but a brief increase in CAPE across the far SE Sunday afternoon could allow for an embedded storm or two. With clouds and rain around, am again expecting highs to be a bit below seasonal norms and ranging from the mid 60s NW to mid 70s SE…

    --
“Invasive albizia (Falcataria falcata (L.) Greuter & R. Rankin) trees pose an increasing threat to infrastructure, transportation networks, and public safety in Hawai’i because their rapid growth and shallow root systems make them susceptible to windthrow during severe weather events. However, comprehensive spatial information on albizia distribution remains limited, constraining invasive-species management, hazard mitigation, and sustainable infrastructure planning. This study evaluates the applicability of a GeoAI-based framework for identifying invasive-tree-related infrastructure exposure at a regional planning scale. This study develops a GeoAI framework using a U-Net convolutional neural network with a ResNet-34 backbone to detect and map albizia canopy from 0.6 m National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) aerial imagery. Training data from two geographically distinct areas, Mānoa and Kahalu’u, were used for model development and iterative refinement. The final model achieved a precision of 0.76, compared with 0.64 in the initial iteration, and was applied to estimate potential tree-fall exposure through spatial proximity analysis of roads and buildings. Following manual quality control, approximately 2 km2 of albizia canopy were identified within the study area. More than 53 km of roads and 2300 buildings were located within the potential tree-fall exposure zone, including portions of major transportation corridors such as Pali Highway, Likelike Highway, and Interstate H-3. By integrating scalable invasive-tree detection with infrastructure exposure assessment, the framework provides a spatial decision-support tool for prioritizing vegetation management, hazard mitigation, and infrastructure maintenance. The approach contributes to sustainability by supporting more targeted use of management resources, reducing potential disruption to critical infrastructure and essential access, and strengthening long-term community and infrastructure resilience…”

  8. Curiosities of Amersham in England !!!

This time took my road warrior skills to go again to jolly England with the Le Shuttle train service (see post), and my Ford ; towing along my good boys and wonderful Rex! It was a very nice trip going into the countryside and seeing several towns of wonderul architecture and history, This one is a must and one of our highlights of the trip, we were back, and it seems even better !! Therefore, let me tell you about curiosities of Amersham in England !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Amersham is located in Buckinghamshire district of England, There are two distinct areas: Old Amersham, and Amersham-on-the-Hill, We were by Old Amersham and its wonderful ! Again, easy on and off major highways to take us to all we needed to see and more, We enjoyed the countryside setting and the friendly townspeople we met,

The Crown Inn Amersham is a sister property to the one we ate see below and here they can accommodate 4 persons in a room and allow pets, The property features a range of flexible meeting rooms, each equipped with state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment, high-speed internet access, and adaptable seating arrangements, ensuring a productive working environment. For leisure, guests can enjoy comfortable lounge areas and a charming courtyard. In addition, the property offers parking, high-quality accommodation, and concierge services.

The Kings Arms hotel has a bar and restaurant we tried and was superbe, Seasonal British ingredients handled with care, menus that change with what’s good, and a dining room that invites you to take your time. Whether it’s a quiet lunch, a long dinner, or a table for the whole family , the restaurant and bar at The Kings Arms is the kind of place where good things happen naturally. They have Mahou beers of Madrid on drafts;our heaven !

We, also, purchase groceries items for late night snacks in our lodging at the Tesco Superstore at 19 London Road West and ,also, filled up gas/petrol cheapest around at 1,999 pounds or 2,331 euros per liter, We found Mahou Madrid beers here and Captain Morgan rum spices that took home plenty ! Tesco Travel Money Amersham is conveniently located inside our store so you can easily exchange currency We did not needed it as they ,also, have an ATM machine inside and we get best rates from our French bank option travel ! We have followed Tesco all over England wherever we are and they are the best, period,

We passed by historical Frith House at 24 Hight Street, Built in the 16C or early 17C, with modifications and refacing in the 19C, In early 17C was used to provide work for poor women making linen products. In 1789, was occupied by a lace dealer named William Morten. By 1901 was described as a “Trimming Factory”. Later years, operated as an antique shop before becoming a private residence, It is locally thought that Beatrix Potter visited the house in 1905 and created two paintings inspired by it, The famous Lilliput Lane miniature model Sugar & Spice (PYO) is based directly on Frith House

The generous width of Old Amersham’s High Street reflects its medieval tradition of weekly markets and an annual ‘chartered’ fair, rights granted by King John in 1200. It is still possible to distinguish the long, thin plots known as burgages on the south side of the High Street which were rented to tradesmen. Their houses lined the street at the front of these plots, with the rear used for workshops, livestock and cultivation. The south side was controlled by the borough and residents could vote for two Members of Parliament to which the borough was entitled. The Lord of the Manor, therefore, made sure this was an area of good repute in order to reap votes for family members. Today, this area is a popular residential area featuring many barn conversions and cottages. On each side of the street are historic façades in a variety of styles, with 18C stucco and brick, Medieval timber frames and a row of gables at the east end. It is here that you will find the Market Hall, (see post) built in 1682 as a gift to the townsfolk from the Drake family. Old Amersham was on the stagecoach network until the arrival of rail travel, and you can see an example of a coaching inn at the King’s Arms Hotel at No.30 (see above), which dates back to the 1400s. The façade of this building was used in Four Weddings and A Funeral (1994), which was filmed in the Crown Hotel further along the street.(see above)

TITLE: Celebrity admiration is linked to submission to authority, study finds

    URL: psypost.org/celebrity-admirati

People who strongly admire celebrities tend to be more deferential to authority and more attached to traditional norms, according to new research published in Psychological Reports. The findings suggest that strong emotional attachments to famous figures relate to a preference for established social order and conventional norms, even after accounting for a person’s general political orientation.

People often form one-sided emotional connections with famous actors, musicians, and social media influencers. While these parasocial relationships are common and can sometimes provide a sense of community, intense celebrity admiration involves spending excessive time and effort focusing on a favorite public figure. This level of absorption is sometimes linked to negative outcomes. For instance, a 2021 study covered by PsyPost indicated that higher obsession with celebrities was associated with lower performance on tests of vocabulary and fluid intelligence.

The idea that celebrity admiration might be tied to authoritarianism is not new. Researchers proposed in 2001 that people inclined to defer to authority might gravitate toward celebrities, who are often treated as authorities on a range of topics, but their study of British participants found no association between the two.

Since then, the understanding of authoritarianism has shifted. The authors of a 2010 paper argued that right-wing authoritarianism is better understood as three related but distinct sets of attitudes: authoritarianism (which involves aggression and strict control), conservatism (which focuses on submission to authority and preserving the status quo), and traditionalism (which centers on adhering to old-fashioned lifestyles and morality).

Nearly 25 years after that first study, and amid shifts in celebrity culture and politics, the researchers sought to test which specific dimensions of authoritarianism are actually associated with celebrity admiration, especially once general political ideology and demographic factors are taken into account. The team was led by Ho Huynh, a senior lecturer in the School of Medicine and Psychology at the Australian National University.

“We know that celebrities have undue influence over people and that celebrities typically endorse liberal-leaning causes (e.g., climate change, immigration, abortion),” Huynh told PsyPost. “We were surprised to learn through our previous work that people who admire celebrities tend to self-identify as more politically conservative.”

“In the current work, we wanted to see if celebrity admiration would extend to right-wing authoritarianism,” Huynh continued. “This work might help to explain the contradiction of why politically conservative people in the United States might be more attracted to celebrities despite the stereotype that celebrities tend to hold liberal views.”

To investigate this, the researchers recruited 331 adults living in the United States through the online crowdsourcing platform Prolific. The sample was deliberately balanced during recruitment to contain an equal mix of self-identified liberals, moderates, and conservatives, meaning it is not nationally representative. About 54 percent of the participants were women, and all were 18 or older, with an average age of about 40.

Participants completed the brief seven-item version of the Celebrity Attitude Scale, a questionnaire that asks people to indicate their agreement with statements about their favorite famous person. This scale measures two levels of admiration. The first is a lighter, entertainment-social level, which includes enjoying keeping up with news about the celebrity or discussing them with friends. The second is a more intense, pathological level, characterized by feelings that the celebrity is a soulmate or that the fan shares a special, indescribable bond with them.

The participants also completed a survey assessing the three dimensions of right-wing authoritarianism. For example, participants rated their agreement with statements like “Obedience and respect for authority are the most important virtues children should learn.” Finally, they provided demographic information, including their education level, socioeconomic status, and their overall political orientation on an 11-point scale ranging from completely liberal to completely conservative.

The initial results showed that both forms of celebrity admiration were linked to higher scores on all three dimensions of authoritarianism. The links were strongest for conservatism (correlations of 0.32 for the lighter form and 0.45 for the intense form, on a scale where 0 means no relationship), moderate for traditionalism (0.19 and 0.32), and weak for authoritarian aggression (0.15 and 0.13). Only the intense form was linked to political conservatism, and modestly so (a correlation of 0.19).

To see if these links held up under closer statistical scrutiny, the researchers ran a series of models that controlled for the participants’ age, gender, education, socioeconomic status, and general political orientation. This step helped rule out the possibility that the connection simply reflected factors like political conservatism, which was linked to authoritarian attitudes and to intense admiration.

After accounting for these factors, celebrity admiration consistently predicted right-wing conservatism and right-wing traditionalism. Demographics and political orientation explained about 24 percent of the variation in conservatism scores; celebrity admiration added 9 percent (lighter form) or 13 percent (intense form) on top of that. For traditionalism, it added only about 2 to 4 percent.

“The association between celebrity admiration and authoritarian submission seems to be robust and reliable, indicating that people who worship their favorite celebrity tend to prefer more dominant authorities,” Huynh explained. Asked what the average person should take away, he said: “People who report admiring their favorite celebrity are more likely to submit to authority and prefer traditional norms. These trends might help explain why people who admire celebrities may self-identify as more politically conservative.”

However, the relationship between celebrity admiration and the third dimension, authoritarianism (the demand for strict punishment of rule-breakers), did not remain robust. Once demographics and political orientation were factored in, intense admiration no longer predicted authoritarian aggression. The lighter form remained a statistically detectable predictor, but it accounted for only about 1 percent of the variation, and the authors do not consider this strong evidence of a link. The authors suggest this may be because people who heavily admire celebrities tend to see the world as fair, with people getting what they deserve, and so may feel less need to support harsh punishment for rule-breakers.

Huynh sees this boundary as an encouraging sign. “Celebrity admiration was not related to authoritarian aggression, which involves strictness and social control,” he noted. “This finding showed the limits of celebrity admiration, which is positive and worthy of optimism.”

As with all research, there are a few things to keep in mind. The study measured these traits at a single point in time, so the direction of the relationship is unknown. Intense absorption in celebrity culture might lead someone to adopt more authority-respecting and traditional views, or people who already hold such views might be more drawn to celebrity culture. When the researchers flipped their statistical model, higher authority-submission scores also predicted more celebrity admiration, a pattern consistent with either direction.

The list of control variables was also limited, missing related traits like narcissism and a preference for social hierarchies. Additionally, the survey asked participants to focus on their favorite celebrity but did not distinguish between typical entertainers and political figures. Because modern politics has become heavily focused on personalities, admiring a politician might function differently than admiring a musician or actor.

“This research was not about political celebrities, but celebrities generally,” Huynh said. “Some people may want to view these findings through the Trump presidencies, but only 5 out of 331 people in the study listed Donald Trump as their favorite celebrity. As such, these findings represent the associations between celebrity admiration and endorsement of different aspects of right-wing authoritarianism more broadly.”

Finally, the study only included participants from the United States. Cultural values, political structures, and the nature of fame vary widely around the world, so these connections might operate differently in other countries.

Huynh suggested another direction for future work. “An interesting next step would be to examine the associations between celebrity admiration and left-wing authoritarianism (e.g., hostility toward people in power, support for censoring opposing views, and rejection of traditional values and norms),” he said.

The study, “Idols and Ideologies: Examining Associations Between Celebrity Admiration and Right-Wing Authoritarianism,” was authored by Ho Phi Huynh, Joshua L. Williams, Marla F. Jorgensen, Amy Dicke-Bohmann, and Lynn McCutcheon.

  11. I recently bought Boards of Canada's "Inferno" via Bandcamp, and when it arrived, it turned out that disc two had a lot of small (invisible, but audible as a short "brrt") no-fills, and one large one that made four 33rpm-spaced loud pops.

I wrote an email to BC to ask what could be done. They asked me to make a recording and send it, which I did, and yesterday, my replacment (free of charge) arrived.

I know people are a bit ambivalent about BC due to semi-recent changes and events, but I thought I'd also relate this very positive story.

    WHAT HAS CHANGED

    AVN updated.

High POPs east of Blue Ridge for this morning.

    KEY MESSAGES

    1) A cloudy cool Sunday with morning rain and drizzle along and east of Blue Ridge.

    2) Dry conditions will return by Monday and last throughout the week. Patchy frost may occur early Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures warm for the second half of the week.

    DISCUSSION

KEY MESSAGE 1...A cloudy cool Sunday with morning rain and drizzle along and east of Blue Ridge.

Cold front which moved through the region Saturday is still providing for abundant cloud cover and cool temperatures. A wave of low pressure is rippling northeast along the front resulting in rain and drizzle this morning for areas primarily along and east of the Blue Ridge. Models have this precip ending by noon with clouds lingering into tonight and then clearing Monday.

With the cool moist airmass in place do not expect much of a temperature rise today. May squeak out a 5 to 10 degree rise if rain exits the area as forecast...highs no warmer than the 60s.

KEY MESSAGE 2...Dry conditions will return by Monday and last throughout the week. Patchy frost may occur early Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures warm for the second half of the week.

High pressure will be centered over the Great Lakes Monday then pass overhead Tuesday. Wind flow should become northwesterly Monday scouring the cool wedge east of the Blue Ridge. As the weather turns drier, dewpoints should drop into the 40s. Low temperatures for Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning may support some patchy frost in the mountain valleys. Locations such as the Greenbrier River Valley and Burkes Garden may see lows in the mid to upper 30s. The models maintain high pressure over the region for the remainder of the week. As the airmass modifies temperatures should moderate for the second half of the week.

Next opportunity for rain is Sunday and Monday Oct 11-12. NHC is currently monitoring a broad area of low pressure in the Southwest Gulf of America with increasing confidence this feature may develop into a cyclone in the next 7 days. The operational run of the GFS brings this feature north but confidence very low as to whether we will partake in any tropical moisture this far north latitude.

    WHAT HAS CHANGED

Precip probabilities for this morning have decreased.

Aviation discussion has been updated for the 12Z TAF issuance.

    KEY MESSAGES

    1. Cloudy and much cooler today for most locations, with areas of mostly light rain/drizzle possible, mainly this afternoon and evening. 2. Near-normal temperatures and dry conditions are expected for much of the work week, with little chance for precipitation.

    DISCUSSION

Key message 1: Cloudy and much cooler today for most locations, with areas of mostly light rain/drizzle possible, mainly this afternoon and evening.

The leading edge of a backdoor cold front has settled south of the CWA this morning, with in-situ cold air damming/notably cooler/more stable air having overtaken all but the upper Savannah Valley. Showers have largely vacated the scene as a result, taking any excessive rainfall threat along with them.

Cool/stable air will encompass virtually the entire CWA through tonight...locations across the Smokies and vicinity being a somewhat notable exception for this afternoon. Max temps are forecast to be almost 10 degrees below climo in most areas outside the mountains...more like 0-5 degrees below normal across the higher terrain. Conditions will remain very moist, with precipitable water values AOA 1.75" expected to linger through the day. A low amplitude trough and associated entrance region of an upper jet will approach the region this afternoon, resulting in some increase in upward vertical motion. However, low level flow/forcing is expected to remain weak as pressures fall within in situ cold air damming region, such that little to no isentropic lift is expected. If anything, the flow above the surface-based stable layer is more downslope/WNW through a good chunk of the day. While chances of rain/drizzle should ramp up to the solid chance/likely range this afternoon, especially across the southern half of the area, the combination of weak forcing and stable air should preclude redevelopment of an excessive rainfall threat. Thunderstorms are generally not expected, except for the potential for an isolated storm or two across the Smokies.

The rain and drizzle will gradually diminish tonight as the upper trough axis shifts east of the area and significant mid/upper level drying occurs. Lingering low level moisture within residual in situ cool pool beneath this drying aloft will yield some potential for (at least) locally dense fog late tonight/early Monday.

Key message 2: Near-normal temperatures and dry conditions are expected for much of the work week, with little chance for precipitation….
