  14. Looking at support.google.com/pixelphone/ and androidcentral.com/how-does-an, I'm curious what y'all think about modern #Android devices' "Trusted Execution Environment" storing #fingerprints (for authentication, unlocking, etc.) in, allegedly, a TPM-backed secure enclave that the OS doesn't have access to (really?)… For Pixel phones, Google claims biometrics never leave the TEE enclave, never touch servers, etc.

I wouldn't use it to travel… but local? I saw some geek friends using it.

  16. #ICE Plans to Develop Own #SmartGlasses to ‘Supplement’ Its #FacialRecognition App

…“supplement” the agency’s facial recognition #MobileFortify application, which lets officers scan someone’s face to verify their #citizenship, according to a Department of #HomelandSecurity ( #DHS ) official. Another person who attended a conference where a senior ICE official spoke about the plans also described them to 404 Media.

    thelocalstack.eu/posts/linkedi

„The whole thing took three minutes. Scan, selfie, done.

Understanding what I actually agreed to took me an entire weekend reading 34 pages of legal documents.

I handed a US company my passport, my face, and the mathematical geometry of my skull. They cross-referenced me against credit agencies and government databases. They’ll use my documents to train their AI. And if the US government comes knocking, they’ll hand it all over — even if it’s stored in Europe, even if I’m European, and possibly without ever telling me.

All for a small blue checkmark on a professional networking site.“

  23. #ICE and CBP’s #FaceRecognition App Can’t Actually Verify Who People Are

ICE has used #MobileFortify to identify #immigrants and #citizens alike over 100,000 times, by one estimate. It wasn't built to work like that—and only got approved after #DHS abandoned its own #privacy rules.

  24. The document shows a shift at ICE towards lawless roving patrols.

There's obviously no requirement for American citizens to carry proof of citizenship at all times.

But not only is ICE demanding proof of citizenship while pointing guns at people they are also demanding biometric scans of faces and even fingerprints without a warrant or even probable cause!

  26. You Can't Refuse To Be Scanned by ICE's #FacialRecognition App, #DHS Document Says - Slashdot

The document provides new details about the technology behind #MobileFortify , how the data it collects is processed and stored, and DHS's rationale for using it. On Wednesday 404 Media reported that both #ICE and Customs and #Border Protection ( #CBP ) are scanning peoples' faces in the streets to verify #citizenship

  27. "Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is using a new mobile phone app that can identify someone based on their fingerprints or face by simply pointing a smartphone camera at them, according to internal ICE emails viewed by 404 Media. The underlying system used for the facial recognition component of the app is ordinarily used when people enter or exit the U.S. Now, that system is being used inside the U.S. by ICE to identify people in the field.

The news highlights the Trump administration’s growing use of sophisticated technology for its mass deportation efforts and ICE’s enforcement of its arrest quotas. The document also shows how biometric systems built for one reason can be repurposed for another, a constant fear and critique from civil liberties proponents of facial recognition tools.

“Face recognition technology is notoriously unreliable, frequently generating false matches and resulting in a number of known wrongful arrests across the country. Immigration agents relying on this technology to try to identify people on the street is a recipe for disaster. Congress has never authorized DHS to use face recognition technology in this way, and the agency should shut this dangerous experiment down,” Nathan Freed Wessler, deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project, told 404 Media in an email."
