  3. Pure Landscape

Total overcast serenity. Scots pine trees on a wee island on Loch Assynt, the far side of the loch fading into the mist/low cloud. Tranquil and then some.

  5. Nestled deep in the Highland forests of Scotland lies an abandoned Opel Olympia. Trees and undulating ground surround the car; it is a considerable distance from the nearest road. A strange scene, but a beautifully photogenic one.

  8. Wheelbarrow checked-out the newly commissioned Ionity charger in Invernessy this afternoon. It's a bit more civilised than the Rose St carpark basement, for sure.

302mi round trip to Hopeman and back. Squeaked home with 15% SoC / 35mi remaining on the GOM.

Also found Clasach Fault / Cove. Very impressive normal fault in Permian sandstone.

  9. Hype for the Future 100B: Grandfather Mountain

Introduction Largely associated with Avery County, Grandfather Mountain is situated at the highest elevation along the Eastern Continental Divide in the United States of America. Though Mount Mitchell is situated at an even higher elevation, Mitchell is located further west and not along the Eastern Continental Divide in any way. 12. Hype for the Future 74C: The Scottish Highlands

Introduction The Scottish Highlands, though historically most infamous for the Highland Clearances, have also resulted in the significant tradition of the Highland Games, for which the Highland Games of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, represent the first Highland Games abroad thanks to the Scots diaspora in the region of what is now Atlantic Canada. Though Lowland Scots have also been involved to lesser extents in settling the territories associated with Canada, the Scottish Highlands continue to […]

  17. Hype for the Future 73I: The Nordic Cross in Scotland

Introduction Even though Scotland itself is not a Nordic country, portions of the territory now claimed by Scotland have historically been identified as Norwegian territory in particular. Following the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway and associated unions, most notably the Kalmar Union with Sweden, the Kingdom of Denmark would continue to claim the Faroe Islands, Iceland (now a sovereign state), and Greenland, in order from southeast to northwest. Norse Heritage While not all of Scotland is […]

  18. Hype for the Future 73D: L’Anse aux Meadows

Introduction The Vikings and the associated settlements, though largely identified as having originated within the region now known as Northern Europe and Scandinavia, have since expanded from the modern nations of Norway and Sweden east into Finland and Russia, though only barely so, but more importantly, south and west into Denmark, Scotland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, and, finally, Newfoundland. Old World or New World? Prior to 1492, the regions that the Vikings had settled […]

Human influence all too obvious, from salmon fishing farms to an ugly scar of a quarry in the hillside. Sigh.

  21. Oidhche Challain: No admission without a rhyme

    Happy Old New Year!

After the 1750 Calendar Act changed the date of New Year’s Day, some Gaels – to make sure they didn’t miss it – chose to celebrate both. Dr Dòmhnall Uilleam Stiùbhart discusses the once ubiquitous Highland tradition of Oidhche Challain:
