    The 'Upper Gorge' bridge was completed at the Woodville end of the Gorge in 1875, with a toll gate to collect revenue for the maintenance of the road. The wooden bridge, built of heart totara, was replaced in 1931 allowing for two-way traffic. To the left of the picture can be seen the Toll Keeper's house.

  10. Today I learned a thing. I hiked often in the gorge from the first picture, but today I found out this was only sort of formed naturally. The river Kander was causing flooding and other disruptions to the village of Thun (picture 2), so early in the 1700's (!), they decided to dig a tunnel to get a more direct way for the Kander to reach Lake Thun (picture 3). However, in 1714 the tunnel collapsed by the raging water of the Kander and the river cut the gorge in the decades after that. Picture 4 shows the current situation.
